Well, today has been a rough day. I know I cannot offer any excuses for what's going on, but I can offer some explanations. I posted the formal one up in the Announcements forum already, but I figured you guys might want the chance to yell back at us.

So here's the less dressed-up version of what happened today. Short form, we're jinxed. I say it that was because I am not exactly a hardware or database guru, so I can't give you actual hard details on what's going on.

First there was a hardware failure. We had not only installed more hardware than we had budgeted for any other launch, but we had dark hardware ready to go in the event of overload on the registration servers. As we saw that you were having trouble registering, we lit up the dark hardware. But it turns out that wasn't the problem--the problem was a silent hardware failure in the device that manages the load across the web servers.

That issue should now be resolved, and we apologize that it took so long to identify. If you're still having registration problems, there's some threads on the Tech Support forum for you to post on with reports.

Now, we have a separate problem. We are getting internal Oracle errors of some sort with Oracle 9i. It not only takes servers down, it keeps them from coming back up. This is what you're seeing if you see "Loading..." -- a server failing to come back up. We have Oracle on the phone. We are trying to find out what's up. I don't have more specific details because I do not want to disturb the guys working on this too much while they work on a resolution for you.

I am sure there are a ton of questions, I am sure that there will be many folks who are very upset--justifiably (hey, I'm upset too, this is not exactly how we wanted things to go today. ). Q and I will try to answer what we can and keep you updated as often as we can. I do ask that we try to keep the thread somewhat civil despite the trying circumstances, so that everyone can find the useful info faster and the noise level stays down.

cool. all things considered, i think it's gone fairly smoothly. i mean, i got to play for at least an hour or two before things wanked up. if this was truly a bad day, i wouldn't have gotten on at all.

way to be speedy.

Hi Holo!,

Compared to EVERY other mmo lauch i've taken part in, this one was the best i've seen thus far, especially given the ammount of fanfair and numbers trying to sign in. You've all done a great job so far, and don't let the naysayers get to ya. .................just cancel their accounts if they get too loud jk.

I started a character on Chilastra and the server went down in mid-creation and was stuck on creating the character (the last part). When I logged back in, the character was a totally different name and appearance. I deleted it and tried to start another. Now it says I can't have anymore characters on that server, when in actuality I don't have any. Also, when deleting, the names show up as already taken by someone. Does this have to do with Oracle? If so, it's extremely frustrating.

Just smack those Oracle guys around a bit, let THEM know whats it's like to be under stress. Other then that though, it's not too bad, I just wish I could've played a bit more today.

Hey, take it easy bud. We all had a hard day. Let's just forget about the problems and start brand new tomorrow.  It's just unfortunate that most of us wasted 1 day of the free trial. Oh well, it's not that much. Good luck.

Heh, I'm a technical trainer for a company that makes high-end firewalls that do load-balancing across multiple servers, Holo ... give me a ring and I'll be on a plane tomorrow to pull that hunk o' junk that jinxed you and replace it with something reliable .....

Good luck ... seems like you really got hosed somewhere along the line on your QA budget, but it's hardly unheard of in the IT industry .... not that it makes it right.

I think you guys are great for keeping us all informed as much as possible, I loved it in Beta, and hopefully the new people we learn to appreciate it in live as well. Too often games like this leave customers in the dark and hanging...

Looks like the servers might be comonig up now, but did you guys have to restore or back out some database stuff cause i think i lost at least a half hour :/ hehe. Oh well hopefully your jinxes end soon.

I am curious as to why the forums are going so slow? They where actually starting to move semi nicely, now they seem to have regressed to previous snail factor speeds. Is it just that there are so many people one it? I thought Lithium was designed for extrodinarly high traffic?

So will those of us who registered today, but have yet to play more than 5 minutes have our free month start tomorrow (or whenever these bugs are fixed)?
