I don't think it was killing the longhorn that opened it up for her.  She said that she had finally declared a residence that day.  That was probably the last thing that she needed to do.  Once she did it, the server took a little while to update, her slot was opened, the server sent her an e-mail, and then at some point she opened the e-mail to find out the good news.

I basically agree with the guy who posted about the letter you get when you first create the character.  It talks about certain things you should do.  Among those are work you way up a faction, master professions, and travel the galaxy.  I now believe that there are 4-5 things that she did that opened the slot:

1.  Reached Colonel in her faction (definite must)

2.  Traveled to all planets and cities (definitely travel to all planets and do the cities just to be safe...remember there are two on Tatooine that don't have shuttle ports)

3.  Master certain professions (definite must...the Holocrons show you which ones you need to do)

4.  Declare your residence (definite must)

5.  Complete your faction theme park (not sure on this one, but heck its something different to do)

A month?  I'm 3 boxes away from Master Architect and I started yesterday.
