...continued

To cheat a tad in waterways, keep this in mind. You cannot send the survey pulse while swimming, but you can recieve it. Hit survey just before you start swimming and then keep going. It'll take a few seconds for the data to come in, however the survey data is based on your position when you recieve the echo, (so to speak) not where you actually sent the pulse from.

(Note: Your position on the survey map is marked by a nifty icon which you can use to verify certain details.)

Once you've found your uber spot don't make a new waypoint, just rename the automatic one. Use a standard naming convention like [resource type] [%] [resource name]. (eg. "Fiberplast 96% Marfa") Then you can change the vew in your datapad and sort your waypoints by name. This will put all the ones for each type together and then sort by the percentage. For added sorting put a type signifyer for the waypoint at the very beginning like "R" for resource. Then all your resources will be sorted together. When you go to survey again it will create a totally new waypoint and won't delete the one you renamed.

(Note: You lose your sorting every time you log or die, and on containers every time you close the container.)

You can also sort Schematics...

If you leave your inventory or a container open, but to the side out of the way of the surveying window (and have your surveying tool/s in it) you can quickly change range/resolution.

If you right click an item in your inventory the radial menu will appear without you needing to hold the mouse button down.

If you have trouble finding corpses in the wild grass be sure you have object names turned on and the range bar pulled out some. I personally don't like object names except at close range so I try to get the object range about the same as my radial flora... that way I have object names popping in just about the same range that grass pops up.

Also, when tweaking your settings, keep in mind that your frame rate in cities will depend more on totally different settings than in the wild. For instance the radial flora and terrain detail make far less difference in a city than the wild. Try out your settings both in the wild and in cities to see what works best for both.

If you know you're going to have a real rough spot in a city or in a certain place look at your feet and zoom out to get an overhead view instead. You can still steer, especially if you use the Overlay Map, but you'll greatly reduce the polygon count which should help.

Use the Chat Options pane of the Options window to setup words or sentences for special colorization. Particularly useful is to colorize your own name to make it easier to tell when somebody is talking to you. Colorize anything you find useful!

All of your character specific settings are saved in specific files on your computer. If you look under the profiles directory you'll see a directory with you SOE account name. Under that is a directory for each server you play on. Under that you should see several files all named a long number, but with different file extensions. (Your chatlog is also here.) These files are transferrable to other characters. So if you spend a long time setting up your keyboard stuff on one character and want to duplicate it for another simply copy the files to the other server directory, and change the number part of the file names to the number for that character, (overwritting the files already there). (If you have an FS slot character you may have both in the same directory, so it may take some trial and error.)

If you are kneeling you do not have to stand up to start running... If you try to move, you'll automatically stand first. You can also harvest while kneeling, even though you cannot while prone.

Setup an alias or macro to "/find clear" to make it easier to clear away the waypoint and arrows when you use find.

You can bind up to EIGHT commands to a key by using Shift, Control, and Alt variations.

1. [Key]

2. Shift+[Key]

3. Ctrl+[Key]

4. Alt+[Key]

5. Shift+Ctrl+[Key]

6. Shift+Alt+[Key]

7. Ctrl+Alt+[Key]

8. Shift+Ctrl+Alt+[Key]

This INCLUDES mouse buttons! (eg. Shift+Mouse0... Mouse0 is the left mouse button)

Note: When using a Shift+[?] command, (like Shift+E) to open a window, (like Email) there is currently a bug which prevents the game from registering when you release the Shift key. This will result in everything acting as if you are still holding shift. SImply press Shift again by i-tself to reset it to off until this bug get's fixed, or don't use any Shifted commands to open windows. (This applies to using Shift to access the second row of the toolbar as well... for example to activate a crafting tool.)

Be nice and put pets and droids away when you come into town (unless you're actually need to use them, or are briefly showing them off). Many people have a hard enough time in the cities.

If you need to relog because of a bug, sit and hit /logout. Then hold down Alt and hit Tab to multitask out of SWG. You can then start the launcher even before SWG has finished logging out. (You can even log into the launcher while still logged in. This can also be useful to check the drop down tab to make sure you picked the right server before finishing character creation if you are uncertain. I suspect you could even log in two characters on two seperate servers, but dare not try for fear my poor computer would burst into flames trying to run two instances of SWG at once... heh)

Multitasking out is also useful for answering instant messages.

When purchasing items it can be useful to look outside your area at times. However, consider how much time/money it'll cost you. You could take up some delivery missions to pay for the ticket, but that also means it'll take longer. Chances are you could run a double destroy sorte in the same time it would take to do the double deliveries, get the item, and come back. If so paying more for a local item and doing a double destroy sorte will actually be more frugal than taking a bus for the cheaper one, with the added benefit of (probably) putting the money into the local economy.

Learn Shhyriiwook, (The Wookie Language). Any wookie can train you, easily, and it can come in handy.

You have to put an item in your inventory before you can equip it. If your root inventory is too full and you put a backpack in the bank or something, you won't be able to re-equip it until you have enough room in your inventory to put it there first. Be careful with those things if you are pressed for space.

Check the text on auctions in the details window. Sometimes you'll find that the Auctioneer put valueable information there, such as more details about the item, or the location of their shop. (If you're auctionaing something consider putting such info there.)

When you setup an auction keep the end date and time in mind. try to have the auction end at on a day and time when many people will be online. People often tend to "snipe" auctions, that is wait until the last minute to bid, if they can. The more people sniping, the higher the bids will go.  ;p

Also try not to totally rename the item when you make it rather than simply adding to the name. It makes it more difficult for people looking for a specific item. For example if you make a DL44 to sell but rename it "My Cap Buster" nobody knows exactly what weapon it is from the simple list, and even if they display the details they have to recognize it by the graphic or the stats. Most people will know they're looking for a DL44 and will only look at the details for items with that in the name, if that's what they want. (Also consider not putting anything before the regular item name. That way if the customer sorts by name it'll appear with the others rather than some strange place. Another tactic, though, would be to put an A or non-letter-character at the front to make it sort to the top of the list, like those car people in the phone book do. Some people may frown on that, though it's probably inconsequential.)

Okay, that's enough... I'm itching to see if the servers are up now!

For the person asking about /assist. It's been my experience that it only works when the target of the /assist is actually attacking/being attacked by something, not just targeting it.

Someone asked a few pages back how to get something into bars w/o getting the radial menu.  Everyone seems to say drag faster -- I found another solution.  If you hold both mouse buttons, you can drag at any speed w/o getting radial menu.

Another tip:

If you have a stimpak as a hotkey, you can heal yourself w/o changing targets just by using the hotkey.  No need for a special macro.  This will only work if you are actually engaged in combat though.

Greetings from your country Doctor P'twic.  (Flury, Coronet)

Here's some "Do You knows" for everyone needing medical attention:

Do you know we're busy people?  If there are lots of people in the med center don't shout "I need healing" or "medic" over and over.  Most of us ignore those people with a passion.

Many great deals can be had while waiting in the hospital.  Need a new gun?  Can't find a high level armorsmith?  Many times these players end up in the hospital, hang out in the hospital or cantina for a while and TALK.  You'll be surprised who you find.

Tip your healer.  That goes for entertainers and medics.  They apreciate it greatly, and it makes us want to heal you sooner.

Be personable.  If there's a line and you don't just want to go AFK talk and hang out.  Those who are entertaining often get healed faster because they attract more attention.  Theatrics help sometimes as well, as just the other day we had a pretty full room when a badly injured guy came in and started /puke ing and /cough ing everywhere.  He also said lots of "Ack.. I'm dying... it's g-going dark... "  and stuff.  Every medic in the room started healing him!  It was funny and he got out of there about 10 mins faster than he might have normally.

Be memorable.  I always try and heal people I remember as fast as I can.  Having a doctor for a freind is ALWAYS a good thing.  If you can't tip, sometimes some extra bones/hides can be a great tip for a "novice medic."

Novice medics remember:  you can /tendwound <wound type>  even if you don't have the medpacks.  Yes this hurts you but if you're just sitting around healing anyway it's okay.

Training:  If you want someone to train you be nice and creative about it.  Many of us are getting tired of hearing "CAN ANYONE TRAIN SCOUTING II?"  In general shouts like that are ignored, or at best put off until later.  If ask individuals or groups in a polite and interesting way that makes sense goes much farther than general shouts.  For instance, say I need "First Aid II" why yell "CAN SOMEONE TEACH FIRST AID II?"  It's better to say to people that have "Novice Medic, Doctor," and especially, "Field Stabalizer" (They have First Aid IV)  something like, "Excuse me doctor.  Could you perhaps teach me some things about First Aid? (II)"  While not everyone is a role player, keeping  a civil tounge can get you miles.  Also, when in doubt, money talks.  (Tipping for training is a nice thing to do.)

Now eat your vegtables and stay away from giant cats and perhaps I won't have to heal you.

Did you know....

Aliases:

Because you can chain aliases together, for some things like sampling
they can be easier.

First create two aliases with the in game alias command:

/alias mine01 mine01
/alias mine02 mine02

Exit the game and make a copy of the aliases.txt file located in the SWG root
directory and then open it with wordpad. You can now edit this file and use that
novel modern concept of cut-n-paste to help. Make sure you keep that black box
looking thing (carriage return, line feed I believe) to seperate them.

BUT, what happens when you want to stop one of these alias chains?

Simply, rename that original copy of the aliases.txt file to something like stop.txt

Now type /load stop.txt and it will load that with aliases of the same name, and
since they don't do anything it will break the chain.

Let's look at an example (which is very simple):

aliases.txt :

mine01: /sample;/pause 600;/sit;/pause 180;/kneel;/pause 15;/mine02
mine02: /sample;/pause 600;/sit;/pause 180;/kneel;/pause 15;/mine03
...

stop.txt :
mine01: Stopping mine01
mine02: Stopping mine02
...

Now if in the game you type: /mine01 it will start, and when finished call
mine02, which will call mine03, so on and so forth. When you're you've
sampled enough, just do the /load stop.txt and when the chain goes to
move on, it will call the new alias with the same name and you're off the
hook.

Another TIP:

Make sure that the macros you assign under the standard stand,sit,kneel,...
aren't attack macros, in case you have the shift key on when you accidentally
hit that while having something targeted. It can save you a corpse run.

Final TIP:

Make sure you deselect any target you don't want to attack as soon as you make
that decision, otherwise you will attack by accident eventually.

Did you know?

Surveying:

When I survey, I look for items over a certain break point (generally 50%).  This means that I have to look at an item, see what the percentage is and then move on the next one.  I used to write down which item has met my break point, but I now use the system to remember for me.

If I an item is lower than my breakpoint, I will close the folder that it is in - ie if I am lookig for alumininium on Correllia and there is no Cowe or Quad......, then I will close that folder.  Wheen I get finished surveying, I can go back up and pick the one that has the best return, and not worry that I am choosing an item that is incorrect.  I will still have to remember which one was best, but whenever I can force the computer to be my memory minder, I am ahead of the game.

I like this htread, thanks for the help in producing it.

OK, here's a tip for crafters.

When you are grinding (crafting just to make XP) use two crafting devices with both of these on hotkeys. Once you finish clicking in your order on one device, start another crafting session on the other device instead of waiting.  You can also craft while going other activities like sampling, watching dancers, being healed, chatting, auto-running, and (most importantly) waiting for shuttles.  Yes, you don't get the bonuses of being next to a crafting station but the idea is to not waist your time.   Use whatever minerals you can get the most of without regard to their quality and don't experiment (that's just extra strain on your mouse-clicking finger.  Also, build items that use the most minerals per each, you'll build XP faster.

If you have friends that would use consumable items (like food, power ups and/or fireworks) give it away for extra user XP.  But, if you have trouble giving it away quickly when just use practice for the XP 5% bonus.    NO BODY wants to see your junk for sale on the market or be spamed with offers of your junk for sale.

Did you know (and judging by the channel browser, few people on Intrepid did)....

This game gives you the ability to create both public and private chat channels! Its still a little buggy (player subscription to channels seems to "fade" often, and need refreshing), but for groups of players who want to keep a constant line of communication open, but aren't grouped together, its the ideal solution. I've a bunch of buddies who play, and while we seldom hunt together, we are constantly chattering to each other through a custom chat channel.

To use this system, right click one of your chat tabs and choose "Join Chat Channel". What you get is the Channel Browser window, which is the heart of the chat system. The right pane of the window shows you a tree-view listing of all available chat channels on your server (the server name will be the root node). Most of the sub nodes are planet names, but there are a few global nodes as well.

To create a new channel, click the node you want your channel to live in and then click the Create button in the left pane. You'll be asked for the channel name and the display name for the channel, and whether or not the channel is public or private (private channels require invitations for other players to join). Click ok, and now your channel shoudl appear in the tree. Click on your channel to select it, then click the Join button on the left to start monitoring the channel. If you created a private channel and wish to invite other players to it, select the channel and click the Info button. This will show you all the players currently listening & invited to the channel, along with giving you the ability to maintain the channel. If its a private channel, you can issue invites to other players. If its a public channel, you can grant moderator permissions to other players.

This is an INCREDIBLY powerful communications tool, and I don't think the player community has even come close to scratching the surface of its potential. Mainly, I'm hoping class players start banding together and creating profession-specific channels. In the market to buy a house? Hop onto the architect channels and ask whose selling in your area. Just bought a new weapon and need a slice job? Hop onto the smuggler channel and see who is free.

Does anyone know a way to make a crafting macro? I can call kits, resources, etc, but don't know how to actually put resources into the kits and move through the crafting process. Thanks.

BTW, sure it's been mentioned, but I didn't see it when I was looking through this list: the tilde key ( ~) brings up the radial menu on your target, and then the # keys can select commands.

Keep this thread bumped!
