Holo, Q said it himself during Beta: Respect is not something you demand, it's something you earn.  You have earned my respect through your honesty and dedication to making this game happen, but most of all because you DO care about us on the other end of the game.

Thanks!

Can't wait for all the issues to be resolved and getting everyone playing!

BTW - GroupChat was not working the few times we managed to get in... a side effect or is it broken again?

Every MMORPG I have been involved with has had one issue or another upon release. Everquest, Server overloads, bandwidth overload, etc. AO software crashes, bandwidth overload. DAoC hardware failure, billing software glitch, etc

You cannot expect a release of this magnitude to happen with out any type of issue's. I for one, alone with others, expected things like this to happen.  Even UO, when first launched, had some pretty big issues and they had 100x LESS people trying to get in. The first few days are always extremely rough with the devs getting very little sleep while trying to fix the unforseen issue's that arise.

You cannot honestly blame them for a piece of hardware going bad or for Oracle's software having a bug in it that was not seen before. If you do, you obviously have no idea of the logistics involved.

When Verant (now SOE) first launched EQ, it had alot of issue's its first 3 days. Alot of down time. But they fixed that, they appologized to the players, and they did something about it. EQ STILL became the most widely and biggest played online game in history. No other game has even come close to it yet with its active subscription rate. And most of that was because no one had EVER done what they did before in magnitude.

Now you come to SWG, another game that has never been attempted in this fashion (and I am not talking MM either), with the new programming techniques, infrastructure needed, etc. It was bound to have problems.

Relax. Breathe. And before you know it, you will look back on this day and wonder what the big deal was and why you got so upset.

This was by far the worst release of a MMO, IHMO.

Hehe, you obviously weren't around when WWII Online launched two years ago. 1 day of extra free playing time? Try 1 month. The game wasn't even really playable until a year into it's life, so no, this was not the worst release ever.

My wife and I have been excited about this game for months now (Well, years for me, months for her), so it was with ill hidden glee we saw the store finally having gotten the shipment earlier today. We forked over $160 for two CE games (Her idea to go for the CE) and $20 for the strategy guide. (Again, her idea..)
Came home, tried for over 2 hours before I was able to register my account, another hour to register her, paid $280 for 2x1 year subscriptions, ending up forking over $460 in one day for this game, and it doesn't work.

My big question is; So what??

I knew there would be issues with the release, there always are. Perhaps not as big as this, but again.. So what? Thing is, is our time really so important as to fly off our handle because a game gets delayed by 1 day? What is it with the modern man and the obsession about our time? Is this why we bring cellphones in to the symphony or movie theater? Because we might miss out on something, because our time is so important that we're willing to ruin the fun of everyone around us? Is that why people take stupid chances on the highway, so they may get there 3 minutes earlier, in the meantime gambling with lives of people around them?

I just don't get it. Chill, read a book, watch a movie, do something semi-productive in stead of sitting there fuming. Accidents do happen, this was one of them, just be happy it wasn't someone crashing in to you on the highway..

The game will work, one of these days. In the meantime, you're alive, enjoy it, go smell the flowers, light one up, whatever it is you do to enjoy life. It's way too short to sit fuming over something like this.

Cheers,

Addy

Not really trying to have a debate about this. If you feel you've gotten your moneys worth than great. I don't, hence the robbed feeling.

Also every MMORPG I've been involved with (Daoc) has had a smooth launch but this is irrelevant as well.

No big deal Holo - things just happen sometimes. Mind you, I wasn't this patient when UO had problems at launch, but thankfully I have matured quite a bit since then (at least, I like to think I have). Besides, I did enough ranting at your D.D. alter ego back at that launch to cover this launch and a few more besides.

What I like to think about is that, even though UO had problems, it was well worth waiting for, and provided a better gaming experience than any I have had to date. What is it, 6 years later? And UO is still going strong. Like I said, worth waiting for. Besides, I was in the SWG beta, so I already know that whats waiting for us on the other side of the login is easily worth it.

-Riptide (aka TaigDecerui)

P.S. Tell the live team (thats probably worked straight through the night) that they're still the best. Sure, at this point they're probably blurry eyed, miserable, and exhausted. Drool is undoubtedly leaking out of the corner of their mouth as their wearied minds struggle to concentrate on Oracle, their concentration shattered long ago by the incessant ringing of their cell phones every 10 seconds as their wives wonder (very loudly I might add) why they didn't come home last night (honest honey, I'm still at the office!). Wish them our best (or at least order everyone Cappuccinos and charge them to BoShek while he's not looking).

Well here's something for you to think about Holocron, while I wait until lunch time to return this horrible, horrible game of yours.

Me, and buddy of mine, and my wife decided to take the day off yesterday to pick up our pre-orders and hopefully spend the day basking in Star Wars goodness.  I should've known the day was going to be screwed when the jackass at GameStop turned us away at the door, telling us SWG wouldn't be in until late in the afternoon.  We waited a few minutes until he opened the store, and wow, the UPS guy came in right behind us with the delivery, just as GameStop had told us would happen when they called the day before to tell us our copies would be here.

We plunk down over $150 between the 3 of us and rush home.  Install the game on all 3 computers.  Then the fun begins.  For FOUR FREAKING HOURS we wrestle with their horrid HTML based registration system.  Most of the time we'd get 'there was an error, thanks for playing, try again' or just your standard white screen 'server couldn’t be found' error.  Now, at one point, my wife managed to get to the point where she could enter her CD key.  She enters it, and of course, gets the white screen 'server not found' error.  An HOUR later she finally manages to get to that screen again, types in her number, and it tells her that CD key is already used.  Of course, her account hasn't been activated, we've not reached the point where we can put in a credit card number, and it's certainly not letting her get past the login.

Time to call tech support.  After waiting on hold for over 30 minutes, she finally gets some monkey on the other end.  After describing her plight, this guy supposedly 'looks up' her account information and proceeds to inform her that it's illegal to hack a CD key.  Seems that, somehow, this CD key is associated with Planetside (even though the CD key starts with 'SWG').  After arguing with this boob, he finally demands that we fax him a copy of the backside of the CD case with the key and a copy of the receipt.  He tells us he'll 'check into it' and call us back.  After a fight at Kinko’s to get them to copy the backside of the CD case (it's got copyrighted graphics on it, and the Kinko's boneheads had kittens about copying it) and a few more dollars latter to pay for the copies and fax, everything is sent and we return home to wait.

Several more hours later, and me and my buddy *finally* manage to complete the registration process.  My wife, however, is still stuck looking at the 'This CD key has already been registered' error message.  So she calls tech support again.  Another long hold time, and we finally talk to another representative who is going to 'service' her.  There are no notes on call ticket, no indication that anything is wrong, etc.  This guy finally finds the tech that we spoke with earlier, and transfers us.  He then proceeds to tell my wife that he only received the cover letter from the fax, nothing else (even though we've got a confirmation from the fax at Kinko's saying that the receiving fax machine got everything correctly).

At this point I am livid, so I get on the phone.  I begin by demanding to speak to his supervisor.  Oh, his supervisor isn't there.  Gee, come to find out, there is NOBODY in charge there so there isn't anyone higher that I can speak to.  Complete crap.  This nimrod absolutely refused to let me speak to a manager or any higher power of any sort.  He then proceeds to tell me that he doesn't have any tools available to either fix my wife's CD key or issue a new key, and that there literally isn't anything that can be done at this point.  He promises that he'll 'check into it' and call us back when he has a way to fix things.  Of course, he can't give us an estimate on when that might be.  I asked him, 'so it could be tomorrow, it could be next month?' and he tells me 'sir, I have no idea.'  He's completely correct there; he certainly couldn't get a clue if he bought one.

So, after burning an entire day of vacation, spending over $100 for mine and my wife's copy, spending hours clicking away at buttons that don't work, and enduring the accusations that my wife somehow hacked the CD key system, what do we have to show for it?  Not a thing.  It's doubtful that GameStop will take the game back (the only reason why we haven't tried that yet is because we all had to go to work today), and I'm more than certain that when he said 'I'll check into it' what he meant was 'please get off the phone so I can take the next call.'  This may not have been the worst launch in history, but from my perspective, it was certainly a non-launch.

I was in beta (by the way, my name is not on the 'thank you' list of beta testers), and I wasn't impressed with what I saw.  Today's events verified my fears.  As soon as World of Warcraft comes out, SoE won't see another red cent from me.

well, mornin, all!

I admit I was a little miffed last night after trying to get online---and this after moving Heaven and Earth to get home from work in time to meet my guild on Chilastra. But, new morn, new perspective.

Though I may disagree with the Devs about design decisions (and did for years) I can at least say with complete certainty that they are dedicated to producing the BEST and they do care about our patronage. Getting out of the selfish mode, I'm starting to realize how much of a let down this unforseen problem must be for the Dev/Tech Teams---can you imagine all the work they've done for the last 2 years suddenly and without warning, resulting in this kind of First Day Live Launch? They're the ones who should be angry and 'losing it'.

So, for what it's worth: SWG Team, I'm sorry you had to endure this unlooked-for gremlin. And, of course, I'm sorry you've had to endure the ire of your customers about this. But, hey, live and learn.

Now, give us the web addy for Oracle so we can flame them back to the Stone Age j/k!

Kirk2

oh, ps: one thing. I really, really don't like these bboards! That much of my whining from last night I will keep
