hello, im new to the game and im trying to understand how it works as far as the classes go

now i know that the manual says that players can master 3 professions and dabble in a 4th

what im curious is what constitutes the professions?  I read that each column constitutes a discipline, does that mean that i could get experience in all 4 disciplines to max each discipline out and then master that profession?  If so does that mean that I could fill out a total of 12 disciplines which is 4 colums for each profession and be a master at 3 professions?

im basically stuck on figuring out how the points and the professions and disciplines work, thank you for the help

btw, great thread, ive learned so much!  I love the game!

did you know that by holding ctrl and using a wheel on a mouse (not shure if it works with anything else) you can zoom in and out on things like inventories or chat boxes

Did you know the input line supports tab command completion? Start typing a slash command like /harv and then press Tab. You will get a list of all commands that start with "harv". If only one command matches, it'll automatically complete.

Did you know?

typing /tt is a "targeted tell" and will send a tell to the selected character

If you /sample while in your own camp you will gain surveying and survival exp

If you are running delivery missions, it is almost always cheaper to buy a roundtrip ticket and do 2 missions to your destination city, and then pick up 2 more and head back

When doing destroy missions, if you /peace after each shot on the nest, you reduce the number of mobs that come out, and also greatly lower your risk of getting overrun and slaughtered

Resting in a camp not only increases your regen rate, but also lowers risk of agro

Ok, I take this back. I've actually tried it yesterday and you can not loop aliases. Seems they have a "recursion protection" built in. Probably a good thing too.

And a new tip:

If you're looking for a friend and you know she's near but you can't find her then try the following:

/waypoint <name of person you're looking for>

This will create a shining beacon of light from the heavens telling you exactly where your friend is.

Unfortunately this only works if your friend is in the vicinity (I'd guess when the dot apears on your radar). Though logical perhaps to avoid stalking. It's still very useful to find someone in a large group.

More as I find them... and some very good tips here too, lots of tiny unknown bits for me.

I have been doing the Imperial missions in Naboo, starting city is Keren.  Now, get 2 deliver, try and get them to the same place, far missions too.  When you get your tickets, click on round trip so you won't have to pay more for a ticket back.  Also look at the shuttle ports to where you are going, some have 2 or 3, you will find that they are different priced.  I find the ones that are 115 to 120, and like I said go round trip, 240 max the deliver missions paying 500 - 600 apiece.  Great guide.

Did you know:

You can hit SHIFT+CTRL+S to slowly have the camera spin around your character?  Couple this with the screenshot key (PrtScn) which will leave an image file in your SWG directory for each time you hit it, and you have all the basics for creating your own 360 degree screenshots.

Of course, you'll have to find a way to assemble the individual .jpg images somehow, but that's going beyond the scope of this thread

Also, you can hit SHIFT+CTRL+H to hide the HUD so you can get all the true beauty of the game without annoying windows in your shot.

Did you know:

That you can use ctrl-p to display those hard earned profession titles above your character name for others to see.  It doesn't get displayed by default which I thought after ctrl-1 targeting myself to see.

This thread is AWESOME!

I have learned so many new tricks. The one i was very happy to find was the Ctrl Shift H to get rid of all the HUD's.

Thanks so much for all the info... wish I had something to add but everyone has already mentioned the things I know!

I'm surprise noone has brought up the following:

----------------------------------------------------------
/find [location]

Using the /find command you can say '/find bank' and it will display a path to the nearest bank. This can also apply for cantinas, shuttleports, etc. It adds a path on-screen, aswell as a waypoint in your datapad. This is so much easier than trying to use your planetary map to look up a location.

----------------------------------------------------------

/logout

If you are smart, when you are done playing, you will use this command to exit the game. If you don't, you leave yourself open to attack for 3 minutes after you exist the game. You must be a) sitting down b) in a hotel, house, camp, or town area. You will see a 30 second timer once you execute that will countdown and then exit the game automatically.

----------------------------------------------------------

/consider

This is the best determining factor on whether you are capable of defeating an enemy. Set up a macro, and bind it to an often-used key. Click on your target, use the /consider command, and in your message area will display somehing like 'Diseased Bantha looks like instant-death' or 'Worrt (Baby) looks to be no-match for you'. This command is great for getting an idea of whether you are capable of defeating this enemy (Besides the icon status icon on your target)

----------------------------------------------------------

Hope these are helpful!

Another note:

Prone

If you are a markman, being prone is the best way to take down an enemies health before they even know your there. If you lay prone before you start attacking, the creature or person will spend between 5-10 seconds looking around trying to find out where the shots are coming from. After that, you'll need to stand up cause they may be right on top of you.

This gives you a few precious seconds to get in some extra hits before it gets close.

I find that kneeling is almost as effective as going prone for long-range combat, and you have a better view.

Here's my tip:  Drag your main weapon to one of the hot keys (F-keys) at the top of the screen.  Pressing the F-key will equip or unequip that weapon.  The reason for this is you can switch between marksman skills and brawling skills quickly because if you are unarmed you are brawling, which is a very effective close-range skill.

So, find a decent target about 30m away.  Go prone (F4 by default) or kneel (F2 by default).  Press your F-key to equip your long-range weapon (usually rifle or carbine).  Start combat (F8 by default).  When target spots you and runs to you, then stand up (F1 by default) and press your weapon F-Key to UNequip.  That puts you in unarmed brawler mode.  Once mob reaches you, I generally take one set forward TOWARDS the mob because it seems brawling is most effective at very close range.    Brawling is much more effective than kiting or running and shooting, and best of all, you get experience for both marksmanship and brawling from the same kill.

Also- a tip on the Hot Key bar (F-Keys).  If you put your mouse cursor over the Hot Keys, and use the scroll wheel, it will rotate to the Shift-F-Keys list.  So, you actually have the regular F-keys and if you hold down shift, you get 12 additional F-keys.  To assign commands to them, just scroll while pointing to the hot key bar, then drag stuff from your activities screen or inventory.   You can use all 24 F-keys regardless of which list is displayed.

Actually, you can just resize the hotkey bar like any other window... it makes the SHIFT+FKeys always visible.

Now, everyone keeps mentioning tips for those with a scroll wheel on the mouse. Any tips for those of us with 3-button mice?

Thanks, for the tips, everyone!
