There are many players that do not wish to be exposed to forms of "immature" communication such as the so-called "leet-speak" in Star Wars Galaxies. Reasons for this is that it destroys the roleplaying, immersion and Star Wars atmosphere or it may be simply annoying when used too much. The only way to avoid this at the moment ist to use /addignore on the player, but this completely bans you from interaction with them and them from interaction with you. Therefore I have come up with this radically creative vision on how to allow players to choose not to be exposed to it, even using modifications of mechanics already existing in SWG:

1. There will be an adjustable client-side word filter that will allow players to replace any words or sequences of words (with letters, numerals, spaces and other signs) typed by anybody with other words and word sequences in chat tabs and chat bubbles.
The words replaced and the words that they will be replaced with will be fully customizable.
It will work similar to the chat color tab in the options menu, just that instead of choosing a color for a given word (sequence), you will be able to input a replacement word (sequence), a blank (just hit space) or even an /emote.
The replaced words and word sequences will appear in a slightly different shade than the regular text in order to highlight a filtered change by default, but the color will be allowed to be adjusted as the player pleases as well.
There will be an option to click enable and disable the customizable word filter just like it is with the profanity filter. Also, there will be an option to enable or disable the word filter for any chat tab individually.
Word filter files will be saved in the player’s profiles folder and players will be able to exchange them on the internet.

Some examples:
You could choose to replace "lol" with "haha". Everytime anybody now types and enters "lol" in any chat tab, it will show up as "haha" to you.
You could choose to replace "u" with "you". Everytime anybody now types and enters "u" in any chat tab, it will show up as "you" to you.
You could choose to replace “n00b” with “kid”. Everytime anybody now types “n00b” in any chat tab, it will show up as “kid” to you.
You could choose to replace “thx” with “thanks”. Everytime anybody now types “thx” in any chat tab, it will show up as “thanks” to you.
Players could choose to replace “:-)” with “; /smile”. Now everytime somebody types “:-)”, he or she will appear to do the preset in-game emote /smile instead.

+ This will improve the atmosphere and immersion in the game a lot, especially for roleplayers, Star Wars fans and more mature players
+ It will allow roleplayers and other players to avoid being exposed to the so-called leet speak and other foul language that roxxor-kiddies and the likes use to destroy the atmosphere in Star Wars Galaxies ever again
+ It will prevent avid leet speakers from being added to a roleplayer's ignore list immediately after saying something "leet" and allow them to interact with roleplayers instead of gating them from the benefits of interaction with the same
+ The word filter file being saved and tradable will allow people to adjust the word filter accordingly
+ The filter only being client side, will still allow people to normally see what is really written with the filter disabled or if the word is not chosen as being filtered
+ Being able to enable and disable the word filter for any chat tab individually will allow people to choose in which chat situations they would like to have the words replaced (in-character vs. out-of-character channels, for example)
+ Marking the replaced words in a different shade will allow people to see that a word has been filtered

Like all my posts from my "Vision" series of ideas, this post is a work in progress and I plan on updating it to improve on it when new ideas come up and to reflect major changes in the game amongst other reasons to change the post.
I would like to know your thoughts and suggestions so I can improve on the 'vision', so feel free to chime in and discuss this vision in a constructive manner!

I really like idea 2. I have no idea how easy it is to do and wether people would fell it's a good use of Developers time, but I would enjoy a more imersive game.

I really like it...

I think an addition to 2 would be to use regular expressions (like perl, or unix like) to determine words, phrases, end of sentence, begin of sentence like that.

So when some types 4 ("whatta u want 4 it")? it can be replaced by "what do you want for it" where is
"it costs 4 credits" will not be fixed ("it costs for credits").

But it might be a tough one to implement. Number 1 should be easy to do. Just make a list of all the l33t speach words and ban them.

I see no great problem with #1 (filter), but #2 (illegality) worries me.

Not from a code point of view, but something about it makes me uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, I dislike l33t speak greatly, but it is a valid method of communication, and a way of forming comminities and inclusions to a cultural group.

No really, hear me out.

People like to be around others who are like minded, people use social gestures to find such people - in an online environment text is probably the best way to do this. L33ters will gravitate towards other l33ters and this will encourage a sense of belonging. This comminity feeling is what keeps people in the game.

So while #1 acts like the obscenity filter client side and people can 'opt out' of l33t speak, option #2 is actually oppressive to community forming social signals. *shrugs*

(P.S. - The Options 1 and 2 were switched during the lifetime of this thread, so other posts may seem to have 1 and 2 mixed up - I have changed my numbers to reflect the change.)

You can't change how people speak or type. This will only encourage players to leave. The game is fine right now as for as chatting goes, so when ever you see 'leet-speakers' just ignore them..you have that option.

Peculiar idea!

I kinda like the filter idea, might work. But to outlaw it would make so many angry, dont think they would ever do that!

People who plays swg comes from many different countries, and many languages is represented.

It might even make it worse, people make a new "leet" swg language in swg. Always those who wants to find ways out of this i belive. I think it is better to have as it is, but maybe implemet a filter system for those of us who like to roleplay.

look as leet as a slang, a dialcet?

But i feel your pain, the uber leet kids who constantly use "leet" can be frustrating. RPG server with strickt rules is a better idea imho.

Wouldn't it be easier if players just chose not to acknowledge them if they didn't want to hear that?  For example, there was a time when I was a master smuggler.  Anytime someone ran up and said "Yo slc", "ned slc", "cn u slc dmg plz", well, I had a hard time decifering it for one, but I always chose to ignore those people.  This way you still get your immersion, the kids still get to act like kids, and SOE doesn't have to lift a finger.

The only way to only see mature language is to actually have mature people playing the game. Sadly though every galaxy out there is flooded with large amounts of immaturity. From your childish punks to adults with no respect for other people. Remove them and the game would be even more enjoyable. Sadly though it's not an option.

You can really annoy a person who uses leet speak by saying ??? or asking what language they are speaking. Usually you'll get a typical immature response. But the idea of knowing that you irritated them to the point of them lowering themselves to an even more pathetic state than they already are is quite enjoyable.
