one of the most useful commans i've come upon when playing on a low-end machine:

/flushGraphicalresources 1

when i'm in coronet, the game is often unplayable for me, due to (what i've thought at least) horrible lag. this command clears your vid card memory, it takes some seconds to complete and your screen may go black (no hangup). after you're in again, game should run a lot smoother.

Thanks for knowledge drop. They really need to make this a sticky, can't the mods of this board see these requests?

More of a "play nice" guide, but I'll add some other tips for interacting with other players:

* Don't beg from other people.  We all started off in the same boat as you with the same equipment and made our money through playing the game.   Just because somebody has something you want, it doesn't mean you're entitled to it.  Sorry to sound like somebody's Dad, but we worked hard to get where we are in the game and you should do the same.  (You're more likely to get a hand-out if you're nice to somebody and just talk to them, but please, don't expect free equipment.  Some people can help you out, some can't, so don't go around thinking people owe you stuff.  Also, talking to people is a good way to get to grips with the game and you'll find that providing somebody isn't in the middle of something, they'll be willing to spend some time helping you out.)

* If you need money, run a mission.  If you don't know how to do a mission, ask a HELPER if they can tell you how to get them.  Just don't expect them to actually help you do the mission, as being a Helper is entirely voluntary.  Whilst many Helpers enjoy assisting new players in a practical manner, not all do.

* Speak clearly.  I know it's difficult in heated situations to express yourself quickly and that SWG uses a lot of jargon, but if you're asking somebody a question, try to pose it in a way they'll understand and for the love of God, avoid using "L337 5P33k" or "text slang."  Personally, I tend to ignore people who say things like "were r u goin" and I know I'm not the only one!

* Always be civil to other players.  Treat them as you'd expect to be treated yourself.  Calling somebody a name, demanding items/services from them for free, being rude or generally "spoiling" the game won't make you any friends.

* Remember that others are playing the game, too.  If you need help and ask somebody, be patient - they may be fighting or in the middle of a conversation with somebody else.  Sending direct messages of "r u there? help me" over and over will guarantee that you'll be on somebody's ignore list pretty quickly.

*  When you get a little cash together, don't forget to tip people who help you with services.  Medics and Entertainers, for example, should be tipped for their heals.  The command to tip somebody is /tip (name) (amount).  Even if you can only afford 50c, tip the person in question, as it's only polite and they will remember you for it.

* Don't spam.  If you need help and are /shouting, wait a while before repeating your request.  Having people fill the screen with shouts is very annoying and you'll find yourself being ignored.

* If you need to find somebody or tell somebody where you are, you can create a Waypoint by typing /waypoint X Y where X and Y are the co-ordinates just below your radar.

* If you need to learn a skill, you can do so from another player.  The only exception is any skill prefixed with "Novice" (e.g. Novice Brawler).  If you need a skill, /shout and ask if somebody can teach it to you.  Again, though, be patient.  If somebody offers to teach you, they'll group with you (so accept their invitation) and try to be as prompt as possible with your acceptance of the training (the person teaching you may be in a hurry to get somewhere else and be going out of their way to help you.)  Also note that you "spend" the experience buying the skill.  If you qualify for two skills (e.g. Hunting I or Exploration I) you can only learn ONE skill for that amount of experience.  For example, if you have 1000 Scout xp and Hunting I and Exploration I both cost 1000 xp, you can only "buy" one of them.  You'll need another 1000 xp before you can acquire the other skill.

A Technical One...

* When buying from the bazaar or from a vendor, the purchased item doesn't automatically get transfered to your inventory - you have to retrieve it.  Once you've bought the item, select the Available Items tab and a list of items will appear.  Select the item and select Retrieve Item.  Note that if you purchase the item from another city (for example, you're in Bestine and you buy something for sale in Anchorhead) you have to travel to the bazaar terminals in that city to collect it.

It is a sticky.  Look at the top of the board.

It's been there for a week or more.

Try capitalizing the letters like this.  And instead of using the 1 afterwards, use this:

/flushGraphicsResources fullReset

Make sure the letters are capitalized like you see here.  And I guess it's Graphics, not Graphical.

sorry, you're right, it's graphics. i usually only write /flushg and press <tab> and then a 1, it works too and is a lot faster than fullreset

Hello, Thanks for helping a Newbie....  My screen locks up at times and I get killed while standing there helpless.  Sometimes, My computer locks and shuts all of the way off.  I logged on 12 times the other day trying so hard to finnish Pistols IV.  I am sad that for some reason the New graphics card is not functioning.  My husband put it in.  And if we can't figure out what we need to do to get it to work I am out of a computer for a week,,,(the shop).?

How do you put this comand into the system?  Is it in the game or the computer?  We have a Radion 9200 ATI card.  The game was freezing and I wanted better grahpics..... I got a better look and better movement when it works..... The other day my system kicked me out 12 times and I had to log back in.  The last time it reseet my tool bar to the start..... like I had just started the game.

Any Ideas would be so welcome. Thanks for helping a Newbie.

The first thing to try would be to go to ATi's website at www.ati.com and download the latest drivers for your video card.  "Drivers" is the term for the software (program) that runs the video card.  Having the latest drivers helps with many problems.  To install them, just download them and then run the file.  Usually the drivers on the website are newer than the ones that come on the CD with the video card.

Another thing that will help with problems and speed up SWG is more system memory (RAM).  It's a different thing than the hard drive. (many people get the two confused with one another)  The hard drive stores all the files that the game uses, and the memory is more of a temporary place that stores information the computer is curently using.  The more memory you have available, the more room the computer has to store information that it needs to work with.

In SWG there is a lot of information being processed - the specifics of how each character looks, their clothing, the houses and items around you, the different attributes of your items, damage that you take in combat, etc etc.  It works much better with more memory.  The minimum amount to play SWG is 256MB, but 512MB is recommended and it runs even better with 1GB. (1024MB)

Of course the speed of your processor (also called a CPU) makes a difference too.  These days a speed of 1GHz (gigahertz) is pretty much the lower end of the spectrum and 2GHz is pretty commonplace.  The higher end models that go 3GHz and above are not very common, but you'll find that most computer junkies (chipheads) have them.  The faster your processor is, the faster and more smoothly everything will run, depending on the quality of all of the other components.  SWG requires at least a 933MHz (megahertz) CPU in order to play, but a 1.5GHz is recommended.  Anything above that is better of course.

I feel like I'm rambling a bit, so if you have any other questions, feel free to post them here and I'll answer as best I can.

Oh and the command is typed in the game.  It is /flushGraphicsResources fullReset and it is helpful for when the game is stuttering and is loading lots of different graphical items.  It empties either the video card's memory or the system memory or both, I'm not sure.

Your problem sounds like it might be related to something else.

You might also try lowering some of the graphics option under CTRL-O and graphics options or terrain detail.  I know this takes away from some of the graphical appeal, but it may help the game run a little smoother.

I hate to be the one to say this, but the Radeon 9200 is a little on the lower end of the video card scale, by today's standards.  I'm including a link below that shows how many different cards perform in a game called Unreal Tournament 2003.  It's not an indication of how every card performs in every system or every game, but it can be used as a rough estimate of how each card performs.  It is from December of 2003.
