I had absolutely no experience making videos. My husband suggested a program called Ulead VideoStudio 9 (you can try it free for 30 days). I was lost when I tried to use it. I used WMM to create three videos, tried Ulead for the fourth and this time, being more familiar with the process, I really enjoyed it. I made my last video "For Misha and Ariel" using the Ulead application. I had much more control over editing, transitions, effects, etc. I have not tried the Adobe application (perhaps I should give it a try before I make a purchase). At any rate, Ulead is also $100, so you might want to check it out. (Link to our video page is in my sig.) Thanks for this thread!

Have never used Elements myself, I have stuck with Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5
The main bonus that I see to using a professional editor like these over movie maker is all of the effects and settings that you can change and use, as well as the fact that you can have more than just one video and audio track. Mixing something like voice, or sound effects with music in moviemaker is a nightmare.

Adoby Premiere Elements does have the option of adding as many tracks as you want. In my video I used a total of four tracks so that I could have multiple pictures over the video going on behind it. There is a nice feature that allows you to delete unused tracks or add them above or below tracks. Also...my Adoby Premiere Elements comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements. I already have a full version of Photoshop, but figured it was the same price as getting one individually where I found it. And for only 100 bucks that's not bad compared to the what, 700+ bucks you'd be spending to get Premiere and the 500+ bucks to get Photoshop? I have messed around in college with Premiere (I think it was an older version) and elements uses a lot of the same type of tools. It definately kicks Windows MovieMaker out of the water. I had so many problems with it locking up on me when I was just trying to do a screenshot slideshow...
Definitely... I mean, moviemaker is good and all if you just want to slap something together. I know I used it to slap together a testing video for Scip, back when the dances kept shifting, but for film editing, or advanced use, stay away.

People who are interested in making movies with games might also want to check out www.machinima.com.
I recently read about machinima, the making of film through the medium of game engines, in an article in the Guardian newspaper (UK) and it seems to be a growing art form both in the numbers practicing it and the creativity and quality in what's produced.
Anyway, have fun with those links .
Edit: Oops, for got to mention (although it's in the article clickified above) that Lionhead (creatores of Black and White) are making a game simply called, "The Movies" which is something you also might wanna check out .

The guys who created Red vs. Blue were at Sundance this year and even did a seminar on machnima (I got there too late to see it, unfortunately) but still, it's an artform pretty much anyone can play around with, and it was getting film industry recognition. Very cool. Maybe Pani of Javy will have a seminar next year
"Yea Saftey Dance was the first that I know of. I'm surprised someone still remembers that it was done. I noticed all the links to it don't work but since I'm in it I have a copy of it. Does anyone need this reposted?
It was done on Starsider, in the first few months of the game actually."
There was actually a video of the first player-produced in-game "party" in the first player-made city released on 7/23/03 (it was a collection of us who all played during beta). Prior to that, and, I think released during beta, was the Shared Dreams video. The party videos and others I've done are here. Though quality-wise they really suck, I'd like to think that they inspired some people to create their own videos, though I could never know for sure since nobody ever mentioned it. But I will say that the Shared Dreams video is what inspired me to do it.
