Well, i'm one of the silent ones who watch as people act out of character and downright rude at times here.
All i can say is: When your ISP goes down, do you act the same way on the phones to their Technical Support as you behave here?
I hope not. As if you happen to be with the ISP i work for, and i get a call from one of you, don't expect me to help you. You'll get hung up on.

Something to remember is: Your whining and ranting, whilst you may feel it is your right to do so, is not helping anyone.

Am I frustrated that i can't play today? Yes.
Am I angry and blaming the Dev team? No. Why not? Because such things were out of their control before this even happened. Nothing in life runs smoothly most of the time, this is no different. The only thing you can do is have some patience and understanding.
They are doing what they can to sort the issues out. It's no different from your ISP's mail server dying and you not being able to get your email for a day. It happens. It wasn't their fault. Computers have a nice way of being finnicky at the most inopportune moments. This is one of those moments.

Holo and Q have been keeping us up to date in a timely and proficient manner. Let's not discourage that by ranting and raving, or they may just one day end up saying 'Sod it, all they do is whine, why should we bother?'
And if that day happens, then where will we be? In an even worse pickle, since no one would know anything and it'd just get to be sheer chaos in here.

So I'm on Q's and Holo's side here. Keep up the good work guys, and the rest of the dev team. Many of us, and i hope i speak on behalf of many of the silent readers here today, understand that issues happen unexpectedly. We all hope to see them resolved as soon as is humanly possible.
And one more thing: Please continue to keep us updated on what's happening, as it is really a great help to know that things are being done and progress is being made.

I can also second the fact about Mozilla being the best browser for these forums at the moment. I've hardly had any issues with browsing any of the threads. I foresee a massive number of new downloads of Mozilla in the near future hehe. We all know it's the best browser anyway (well those of us who use it )
And i'm glad that the SW:G site works perfectly with it too.

agh...but when my ISP goes down I do throw a fit as I run a business with my internet connection...and I ALWAYS get a free month when they screw up too.

anyway...back to something I found comical...This was part of the EQ patch message today "Server stability is always a good thing".

going to bed. hopefully this stuff will be working in the morning.

gnight.

I'd also like to comment that the CSR staff was horrible on the live chat feature. No the chat rooms, but the link you click on from the website.

Long waits then yes and no answers. Another time no answers some kind of Yoda canned response and then disconnected after waiting 15 mins.
[/quote]

I had quite the opposite experience the 3 times I spoke with them in Chat.

They were courtious, appologiesed for the problems, gave a basic honest reason, were frank at what they could and could not do and ended the chat with an appology and a thank you.

Although it was frustrating that they could not offer a solution, they still were professional and polite.  Given the evironment and the hostilities they were facing, I think they did quite a decent job of it.

MoffJohnson and NJ_Ragman, I was going to post something, but you beat me to it.  I could not have said it more eloquently.

I'll post something anyway.

As a developer myself, I can empathize with what the SOE devs are going through. I know what it's like to have [an] irate customer(s) hanging on the phone, expecting you to create some miracle fix and transport them to happy-happy-rainbow-land.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending SOE, the game should definitely have been held in beta for a while longer. I wasn't in the beta, but if they were experiencing DB problems, then they most definitely should have worked those out before going live. Anything that compromises system integrity should have been fixed.

However, I also believe that the majority of the SWG team would agree with a lot of people in saying that it just wasn't quite ready. No self-respecting developer wants to release software that isn't perfect. Unfortunatley, and I've seen this myself many times, the Powers That Be will quite often not listen when money is on the line.

To everyone who has exressed disgust at the SWG team,  I have nothing to say to you except: "go to sleep, read a book, spend time with your Significant Others (if available), because the SWG dev team won't be doing that for a while." If you're so uptight that a single bad day .. the FIRST day .. makes you want to take your software back, do it. I certainly wouldn't want to be in a group/PA with you, if that group/PA has a bad day. It's ONE DAY.
In Anarchy Online's early stages, the entire system would be down for DAYS, without so much as a "we're working on it" from the PR peeps.

To Holo, Q-3P0 and the whole SWG team, kudos. I've rarely seen a situation as critical as this one handled with such aplomb. VERY few companies would ever disclose issue information as detailed as what you have provided us with. Every product has a rough release, and IMHO, you're all doing a bang-up job. I look forward to an enjoyable SWG experience as a result of all the hours everyone there is putting into resolving the issues.

Flame away if you wish. I care not.

Coming from the beta, this isn't any worse than what we've dealt with before.   Sucks that it had to happen today of all days, and not during beta...

Out of curiousity, what load balancing product is being used?  We use F5's BigIP balancers at my work, and we hardly have any problem with them.  Even if they're a bit user-hostile to configure.

And you'll get fired. Being polite to the customer, no matter how rude they are, is one of your job duties as a support member. Now, I'm not defending people being rude - I personally feel that it's out of line too - but your attitude is also wrong.

The mailserver at my company currently has an uptime of 427 days. You better believe that it's your fault if it goes down unless (1) the power went out for longer than the backup power system lasts, (2) you lose connection to the upstream provider, (3) intermediate hardware not under your control flakes out, or (4) it's a planned outage that I've been notified of in advance.

Umm, yes, but then they'd be out of a job.

Ok, so, after a somewhat negative post so far... I wholeheartedly agree with this. I think there could have been more due diligence to prepare for today, but I'm definitely satisfied with the way they've been keeping us updated and not tried to soften the story. Props!

Like I said on the last forum boards ...the 1st day will be a nightmare, expect it. *shrug*

What I found hilarious though was where somebody posted the excerpt from Raph's outlines on how to run a community. LOL it was point for point exactly what he has said here ... doing nothing but following a pre-scripted damage control script. Not that there is anything wrong with that, hell if it was my company Id be doing the same thing. Its all you folks eating it up like candy that I find amusing .... *makes sheep noises*

No worries guys, over the next days, weeks and months we'll be having fun eventualy ...cyas in there

Which in a large part is the problem with Customer Service today.  As if the arrogance of the IT world wasn't bad and misunderstood enough...  You are not some high priest sitting atop an altar waiting to dispense your "wisdom" to the masses.  Those of us in these positions are no better than a garage mechanic.  If my garage mechanic flipped me this attitude?  I'd find another garage.

_____________________________________________________________________________ They are doing what they can to sort the issues out. This is the part that I find farcial.  It happens?  Ummmm....yeah.  The first time my ISP has an email server that doesn't have some form of redundancy built into it is the day they can take a flying leap.  "Stuff Happens" is no excuse for anyone in IT.  I can't even imagine a case where my butt wouldn't be on the street if our corporate email server cluster was down for longer than about a half hour.  And it would take four separate servers blowing chunks for it to be "completely" out.

_____________________________________________________________________________ Holo and Q have been keeping us up to date in a timely and proficient manner.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Oddly enough, isn't this part of their job?  I appreciate the manner in which they've been dealing with this.  Very professional.  About the only aspect of this entire fiasco that has any sort of bright lining to it.  They are two of the best in the business.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Let's not discourage that by ranting and raving, or they may just one day end up saying 'Sod it, all they do is whine, why should we bother?'

_____________________________________________________________________________

I tend to disagree with you again on this point.  I think there ought to be some VP that's blowing his flipping lid about now...  I want to hear about cots in the hallways and devs passing out in front of keyboards.  I want to hear that the soda coolers have been completely emptied and that there's so much take out food cartons littering the hallways that they've had to call in a separate cleaning crew.  I want to hear that they've called in the "Super Secret Ultra Oracle Database Black Helicopter Squadron" to fix this thing.

Do I sound harsh?  Do I sound ultra-critical?  Yes.  For one very simple reason.  THIS IS THEIR JOB.  Yes, it's nice to get the kudos, the fanfare, and the confetti parades.  It's great to read dozens of posts hearing how everyone is behind you and that the masses are lining up in a ticker tape parade for the great work that they've done.  However, when it comes down to it, all the hard work that they've put into it thus far is for nothing.  Because it isn't working.  That's the bottom line.

I will tip my cap to them for keeping us informed.  That's been the bright side.  And I will commend them on getting the registration process fixed so quickly.  Here's hoping that once they squash this latest problem that things flow smoothly from here on out for them.  But don't expect me or anyone else to do a metaphorical "Aw shucks, guys...this was bound to happen.  Get back in there, Sparky."  I empathize that they're having a bad time.  But them's the breaks.

Well that formatted for crap, didn't it?  Sheesh.  My apologies for the mish-mash that turned into.

An addendum that I thought of after rereading it for the fourteenth time...

I do support the devs.  And the staff.  Just don't agree that as consumers or subscribers to a product that we should just "accept" this first day of a MMORPG because...well, because...these things happen?  Pshaw.

Man, I was so used to crashing the servers in beta, I guess I got a little carried away!

J/k!

Seriously though...

We didn't survive all those crashes in beta to be stopped on Day 1!!!  Keep up the good work in nailing down those crashes!  We will survive!

Holo, I love you.

Will you marry me?

seriously though, you're awesome, I've never seen such dedication in a game company to fix problems. I've been playing Counter-Strike for 3 years and I'm used to game companies (Valve) making the game worse each release, rather than better. I would like you to know I really appreciate your efforts.

Thanks guys. I know you devs probably won't get this far down in this thread with your reading but I want to post this anyway. I REALLY APPRICIATE the long hours and hard work you guys are putting in to try and make my playtime exist. It is hard being in a carrer where you are always trying to keep others pleased. I know. I do it every day also. I completely understand this is not what was wanted on launch day, By either side, players or Devs. This is supposed to be a glorious occasion. I and alot other really appriciate what you guys are doing and all the work it is taking. Now, to all you punks who are talking crap. The devs didnt want this. Nor did they strive for this. they are not sitting back laughing about this. This is more than a game for them. This is thier jobs and no one wants thier job to get rocky and thier customers to get restless.
