Go to the front page of the forum, top of the page, you'll see a status bar showing how much has been donated this month. Right below that is a button to donate.

Am I wrong or direct donation through Credit Card (not using PayPal) is actually barren from use?
Maybe I'm mistaken though!

I just closed out 2 of my World of Warcraft accounts and will now be putting those funds towards this. A friend of mine just told me about this project and I have already got 3-4 more people playing again in the last 3-4 days. They will also be donating in the near future as well. I started playing SWG the second day it was released!

I will be trying out the emu first. If it's worth it, I will be cancelling my SWOTR subscription and will be donating here, that is, if you guys can find a way for me to donate without PayPal. They keep giving me a hard time, and I'm tired of constantly having tobring my PayPal account out from limited use, because they cannot get their things together.

Just out of curiosity, can we see a more detailed breakdown of the accounting/NPO costs? Those numbers look pretty round to me and I wonder if it would be possible to appeal to a member of the community to help with keeping the books as a way to cut costs. With a shortfall of around $400 over the first half of the year, it seems like that could make the difference between running at a surplus as opposed to what looks like a slow drain on the coffers at the moment.

Re the paypal fees: are they assessed on a per-donation basis? At what rate? I have worked in the payment processing industry and may be able to help with cutting this down, a switch would also allow for credit card and ACH (the same sort of system that allows you to pay your credit card bill online) processing. I am happy to help, feel free to PM me if you would like.

One more thought, and I have saved the stupid question for last, but are these financials for the entire project, i.e. game server etc., or just for the maintenance of the forums? I assume the former, but the tag "help contribute to the swgemu forums" makes it a little ambiguous.

SWGEmu is a NPO registered and based in Hungary, so unless you are familiar with Hungarian law i doubt you will be able to do any better than an accountant from Hungary, in any case i think that the accountant that is to keep our books needs to be certified in Hungary.

Paypal takes their cut from any and all transactions made from or to their account. We receive a donation, Paypal takes their cut... I think its some 5%.

Yes, money from donations is meant for the whole project not just forums.

Hey, Vlada--

First of, I just want to clarify: my earlier message was in no way intended to be critical or difficult. I am sure you all know how much your efforts are appreciated, not just by me, but by the rest of this community as well.

Secondly, let me just lay out where my confusion came from. In the Playin.Fr interview, this was said: "In November 2011 SWGEmu became an officially, globally recognized 501(c) Non-Profit Organization registered by Oru in Hungary." That is where I got my information. The issue here is that, to the best of my knowledge, there is no such thing as a "globally recognized" 501(c) organization, because the 501(c) in that name refers to the United States Internal Revenue Code, not a statute from Hungary, or any other country for that matter. It just means that the organization's income is tax exempt in the US.

So, the only option I see is that SWGEmu is an organization registered in Hungary, with non-profit status in the U.S.. Is that correct? If so, hats further off to you guys because registering a foreign organization with the IRS is much, much more complicated.

In any event, if the company is a 501(c) non profit under US law there are going to be accounting implications here in the US, not just in Hungary.

This is really beside the point though, I think we are pretty far adrift from the purpose of my original post, which was to be constructive. So, I will pipe down...

Thanks for the response.

As we received more then $20k per year in donations, PayPal had a reporting obligation towards IRS. We registered the company with a globally identified VAT number, so our income can be treated properly in this sense.

Back to the breakdown of the costs, it is mainly going for up-keeping the company with a consultant firm as we are still not too familiar with these stuff. There are special documents you need to provide annually for an NPO here. We were able to cut the accountant's cost into half, but we lost quite some due to a recent case. We can try to reveal more details on the next financial report as there seems to be more interest in it.

I'll give you guys your fair share when I have it (meaning exactly how much SWG would have costed back in the day for how long I've been playing here). What's that...$60 for the box + $15 every month? It's been so long since I played on the live servers. I'm not just putting this here for grins; you have my word for it. May take a while though :)

Is there anyway to use bitcoin to cut the cost on donations?
and I didn't realize how much it cost to maintain the game online

I thank you for the opportunity to play SWG again, but also to finally understand what everyone kept raving about when they talked about CU and NGE verse pre-CU-NGE
