Basilisk maintenance 3/4/13

Over the last few months our database has grown drastically and will soon surpass our server capabilities. It is because of that that certain changes in our database and compression had to be made. Last week they were tested on TC: Nova and now it is time to apply the same changes to Basilisk. This should help save us a lot of space on SSD's, which means we won't be forced to add two additional ones and thus increase our already high monthly expenses.

On Monday March 4th, Basilisk will be taken offline for maintenance. Expected downtime will be approximately the same as the one we had last week, more than 24 hours.

Basilisk will be taken offline for maintenance in 15 minutes (6:35AM EST).

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rtZlRqRWJjE/UR9zS3vvOWI/AAAAAAAAA1I/skQ_3FAPCLk/s640/basoffline.jpg

EDIT 1: 8% (11:30AM EST)
EDIT 2: 40% (3:50PM EST)
EDIT 3: 55% (7:00PM EST)
EDIT 4: 65% (9:10PM EST)
EDIT 5: 100% (6:20PM EST)

TheAnswer is going to make another backup of the database and he will boot the server after.

EDIT 6: Basilisk has been ONLINE over 3 hours. All is good in the world... (10:45AM EST)

We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your continuous support.

Does that by any chance mean that changes that're on Nova will be moved over as well? I am sure that's a no, but I ask out of curiosity anyway - waiting for the Commando skill fixes before I decide to go down that road. Appreciate all the work, very well done.

Nope, nothing to do with Publish 3, or Jedi or JTL or CH, BE, DE, Commando or anything else missing for that matter. This is only database related.

======================

Forgive me for asking... but what does a one-time cost of buying an SSD (or two) have anything to do with "already high monthly expenses". That makes it sound like you're trying to say that buying one or two SSD's will increase monthly costs/fees.

This is not a flame post, I am genuinely curious as to the wording and meaning of that statement. To me, increasing monthly expenses would be more bandwidth charges, or fees to a server hosting location, etc., etc... not a static cost of a disk drive (or two).

Edit: if you're talking about factoring in the cost of two 256 GB SSD drives (for example), over a yearly budget... that comes out to about an extra $0.90 per day.

Putting up a separate "Donate" link would probably help, if you stated that the purpose was for server hardware upgrade(s). This could be simply removed once the hardware had been acquired. There might even be people that would donate the actual hardware required (instead of sending cash funds).

I get it that maintenance has to happen at some time. But I am sure there are just as many EU chaps as US. Does the maintenance always have to be at EST preferable times?

Fanboi replies aside, I expect to get flamed. Surely my opinion counts as much as anyone else's? I got flamed in a previous post a while ago for suggesting that all the devs/mods were American, and told that was not the case. So why not alternate between EU and US convenient times for the maintenance?

And Dymonite, some of us actually do pay for this and make contributions every month. We can't all be sponging fanbois.

desporo

I always hated that with the swg team on live, they always took down the server at midday GMT so that us euro players lost time in game and the Americans didn't lose any because they should be asleep by that time of the morning.

I mean why do Americans get to play till 4am and we lose time in the day surely they should have done server downtime at like midnight USA time back in the day of swg live. Damn them old swg devs lol

I'm sure though that the swgemu devs are much nicer people than the swg devs and accommodate the euro players much better. Let's hope anyway as its not ALL about the USA time zone you know people.

Vlada
03-04-2013, 09:20 AM
We do what we do when its convenient for us, has nothign to do with your or anyone elses play time, which I might add is irrelevant in this case. Person doing this, TheAnswer is from Europe, and he will brig the server down when it works best for him, it has nothing to do with you, me or anyone else for that matter, it has to do with TA's schedule.

EDIT: Just checked on Google analitics, in the last 30 days of all the visits to SWGEmu 66.70% came from US.

Swedishoyster

We real gamers play 24/7 and are thus not affected by silly time zones.

As for SSD vs. optimizing code, we should be happy we don't have lazy developers that just up the hardware but instead tries to optimize the code and database as much as possible. I would however have no problem with donating a little more in the future should the need arise.

LMAO, I have monday and tuesday off too, spending it with my wife, take your time, and do what you need to do, I love playing SWG and love that you guys even have an emu setup let alone make sure it runs smoothly for us

Edit: Also like last time it was down for bout 30hrs, so it makes no difference what time zone you are in, no one is getting a better deal out of it, it happens, things need to be fixed/done/edited, I feel kind of dissapointed that instead of "Thank you guys for taking the time to make our server better etc etc" all i seem to see is "Why cant it be at such n such, but its my day off, whine, whine...."

Vlada firs off, I have not been her elong but may I say your fantastic? You are very active and you do seem to have one of the longest fuses I have ever seen. (As in very patiant).

If you know, or could ask perhaps..

Why are we even keeping the Database on the SSD? I mean... I for one see very little reason to it. I could explain more in detail if needed but most of what the Database does it transfer bits and peices back and forth via bandwith. I can see the SSD being helpful when it comes to moving the database on and off but even than as see last week and will see this week, diskspeed has NOTHING to do with that.

On top of that, the other hardrives mounted in that machine I can say with near certinty that they are Caviar Blacks if not something comparable which are near a decent SSD in most things. Now laoding time, sure... the server would take 15% (ish) longer to load. (On Start-up) if the SSD is a good one (speed wise), but I bet you it's not, I bet it's a more reliable one that is slower then the rest.

We would have no issues with space though :)

I have built quite a few servers and rigs, SSD are coming down in price with larger space but would it not be more efficent to have a couple larger Raptors and fill the system with as much ram as it would take?

My husband loves these outages as the house gets cleaner than usual wipe down and hovering. Actually started doing the garden work today so he will be over the moon when he gets home today. lol I love playing as much as the next person and get major withdrawl pangs. But in the long run...we are talking about a few hrs to improve the gaming experience due to a better set up database. Vlada said it might need to happen one more time...maybe I will catch up on the Ironing then. I can get past the withdrawls quickly knowing it will only get better.

Thanks guys for all you are doing to ensure smoother gaming for us addicted players, and I suspect you guys play as well sometimes so are effected by this downtime as well.

Roll on the next 32 hrs, approx time of last outage due to maint.

We use SSDs because our database has almost 100 million (350GB) objects. We need VERY fast random access speeds, something that no HDD comes close to SSDs.

You say 15% slower HA! Nova hdds (raid1) take 10 times more to load and do the object saves compared to Basilisk SSDs.

Thank you for SWGEmu team and Dev team devotion.

For all flamers worry with this downtime :
I'm European. Yes, most of online games are not in Europe, then European players surfer most of duration downtimes. Yes, but in all case, you always have lots of players will flame about downtimes. It's a game! Free, except for thoses donate every month like me, but 1 or 2 days lost? What is disadvantage regarding pleasure to have capacity to play with SWG, for your memroy: officialy closed, then may be illegal. This EMU official an accepted by owners of Starwars licences. We're lucky. For many others EMU :poor performance server + lot of downtimes + poor dev team + illegal then only on invitation + few players.

I'm enjoying every downtime, it's to have better gaming experience and better pleasure. Regarding my experience with SOE games, like EQ1 with this huge quantity of 'Extended downtime' during 1 or 5 days, SWGEmu have lower downtime rate.

Finaly it's an game hosted by US people in US country. Others countries are lucky to have right to play. then be happy or mount your how EMU!

One more time : Thank you for SWGEmu team and Dev team devotion. Many players of SWGEmu love Starwars univers and SWG is the best (from my POV) SW games with X-Wing series. Like UO, i'm still dreamy about same live duration for SWGEmu.

Regards.

Thanks for the Answer to my question. I guess I an agree to a point. Mostly ebcause you RENT the servers and have little to no access to configure it. I would prefer the RAM to handle Random Access personally. A Rented server makes the difficult, didn't think about that :(

P.S. I wish the company would be willing to accept an SSD from us. I am sure we could fund one and they could put it in the machine and not charge us more per month!

It's not being updated weekly? I can't remember the last time a change, fix or addition was implemented on live unless it was a minor behind the scenes one?? Not taking away from your praise for the EMU team. They are doing a great job.

I believe the last couple of downtimes including this one is down to maintenance / streamlining / saving space / saving money.

Sure, ram is always better for performance, but SSDs are certainly an attractive option once you get to a certain size, and I think we're past that point here.

Just a rough estimate, but adding another 64G of ram to a server would probably add around $1k/month to the cost, maybe more. (I'm not sure the exact deal that swgemu got; thats just a ballpark figure).

256G of ram would probably be closer to $3k/month extra, not really practical, and it still wouldn't hold the database entirely.

Adding another 400G ssd would probably be around $300/month.

My estimates may be a little out of date, I haven't priced anything yet this year, but it should be around there.

Serverdown seems to be very profitable.
Donations went from 800 to nearly 1700 bucks last 20hours :D

I was just about to post something about that. This morning it was at a third and the longer the day went on the more people donated. Hell, even I opened my paypal then remembered they want a landline to confirm my identity. I haven't had a landline in about ten years.
