The anger coming from some people or the disrespect towards the team is disgusting. I think that the Team
does a SPECF*CKINGTACULAR job of running this server, and giving us the game we all love. They are people too, and they do more for us, than some of us do for us.

And I can tell you unequivocally, for the budget they have, the downtimes are very minimal.

I know companies that spend an order of magnitude more and have just as much downtime.

25 hours and counting. I understand it's maintenance but, I'm starting to feel like I did back in the day. As the server lay dormant to me and not knowing what little things might be lurking on the other side, I can't help but wonder, once again, "What is going to be broken when they finally DO bring the servers back up? What did they break during the "fix"? How long will it be taken back down to correct those mistakes? And how long will it take to correct THOSE mistakes after that? Am I going to be rubberbanding everywhere? Will I have to do the last 2 hours of XP grinding again because they rolled it back? What did they break now?!" But that was when SoE was running it, right? ....Right??


Soooo many comments, but I will just stfu..... Okay, I won't.
It's Alpha, not the finalized game.
It's a volunteer project, and the devs aren't getting paid for the stuff they do in their spare time. I have seen games that have worse community and support and everything, that IS actually commercial. You can pay for SWTOR and try to file a ticket. By the time you get an answer, you already forgot what you wanted in the first place. And the answer you get is about as helpful as the advice to connect your computer to the internet before attempting to log in on the game.
This is a great game, which is worth waiting for. Years, if needed. I will ALWAYS wait for this game. Yeah, I had also plans ingame, and I was chewing my nails all week about my city update on sunday. So I missed it. OHNOEZ! Well, go cry a river. 25 hours, and it's gunna take 10 more, I bet!

Yeah, I hope you were not thinking that I was mad, or complaining. Just the opposite actually. Just sick of people acting like games should not have maintenance. It's required, like restarting your computer every so often. **** happens, We have to deal with it..

Like I said, I don't mind the down time, and for being awake only 2 hours today, I've gotten more done than I normally do, when the servers are up.
So its a nice little break.

I mean there are like 8 people working on the game? You are right, the down time is so minimal for that many people, they work their asses off, for us.
Expecting multi-million dollar maintenance times from a private server is not realistic.

I personally don't know much about server hardware, but 2.00ghz seems prehistoric to me. My computer is currently running at 4.6 ghz.
Server CPUs (like Xeon with multiproc support) a bit different that desktop CPUs. Less clock rate, more stability (extra error recovery, ECC memory etc).

Maybe 1 or 2 posts in this entire thread have slightly leaned towards a little bitterness. 40% are random chat. 30% are about hardware and what they're doing. No doubt it was good, and the length of it impressed me, I love long movies. It really bummed me out when Q said there weren't any gadgets for Bond in this movie:( I always enjoyed seeing espionage tools and gadgets.

But after some due thought: There are countless of star wars fans all over the globe. Yeah, ****** is a huge-*** company, but even they cannot afford to ruin Star Wars movies and make them for 5-year-olds from now on. If they really bring a ****** sing-along-music-scene, that will be the first and only ****** produced SW movie I ever saw. And I'm very sure that a lot of people share this opinion with me.
So I'm hopeful. Probably there will be things for kids, like maybe ewoks? Yuck! But however, SW is an adult-thing that children just happen to love as well. They can't ruin this without killing the spirit. I'm sure these will be good movies. Pirates of the Carribean was a good movie, funny and happy ending and all, but without a horrid music moment.

Oh, and just to point that out. I am 26 years old, and in the past couple of weeks, I have watched a lot of old original ****** movies, for the shiz and gigz. And I could still sing ALL the songs with them, after like 15 years.
I dig these moments - in some regards I can just allow myself to be a girly girl, even when I fix cars for a living.
Just saying, IMO these "moments" have nothing to do with star wars movies, and are not tolerable in them. If I want cute ****** songs, I can watch Little Mermaid or something.

Well if you look at every single movie ****** has made, including Pirates of the Caribbean (which I like too, dont get me wrong), they have a tendency to take away anything that is semi-R rated. Not that Star Wars was ever close to that aspect, but it does have a very adult-trended fanbase and it will probably be the acting that will ruin it (just like it ruined episode 3 for me).

I am staying positive, because I love star wars to death, but I also hate ****** to death, and mixing those two will make something that isnt my expectations, I can almost guarantee it.

But im still going to read the books and play SWG regardless haha

Don't forget that ****** owns Touchstone Pictures and uses it to release more mature pictures - like A Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - which happens to have a PG rating. Guess what the original Star Wars film rating is? You got it, PG.

Yes it 2.0Ghz, but you cannot relate that to a desktop. This server has 2 Processors with 6 cores each running at 2Ghz. Its is running on current comodidty server hardware. Also, the current process is limited by the disk subsystem not the CPU anyway.

Remember these are 6-core XEON prcessors with hyperthreading so in essence they can process 24 threads at the same time. Definitely not a CPU bottleneck. Most likely the HDDs are causing the bottleneck.

How can you complain when these people are putting their "Play time" in life into doing this for us to enjoy in our "play time". Even if the server was down for a week youd have no right to complain. Its free. They also have lives..unlike some people it seems....who have nothing better but to sit here and act like its the end of the world. A few days without SWG is better then the years we lived without it after CU. So until you are putting your spare time into doing the EMU project. Dont complain.

If you went for years without playing SWG don't blame anyone but yourself. I will agree that the CU and NGE versions weren't as good but they were still SWG and better than anything else out there and by the end of the game they had addes so much new content that was actually better than before that the only negative thing about the game was the 12 professions and lack of item decay. Overall game play was actually better. At that point the game was no longer NGE but post-NGE. The only time I have been without SWG since beta was the time I choosw not to play on the Liberator server because of how broken it was. I hate not being able to play but am willing to relax and be patient while they perform necessary maintenance on the game. I may have to play LotRO for a while. Haven't played that for a few months.

I kept saying "I need to write that down sometime, but I have so much to do with my city and decorations and everything", when it came to re-writing the story of my RP Character Milari.
Now I have made an excessive use of the time off, and went through and corrected roughly 80 A4 pages. Yay! :D

Probably, but then again it's not like the last four SW movies haven't sucked in their own right, (yes I include ROTJ when Lucas first sold out by replacing Wookies, a fight that would have been truly epic, with teddy bears for the "cute" factor). So in a way ****** has no direction to go but up. Plus if they actually capitalize on the potential we could see a SW TV series and some spinoffs.

I am also hoping that the failure of SWTOR will cause ****** to relaunch SWG with a new graphics engine so we can continue our journey. It all makes sense now. In edit 3 of the original notification (on home) it is mentioned they are reloading to 'recover space.' That usually means Defrag. Defrag takes a variable and immensely long of period of time to read, move, rewrite the data in contiguous blocks, and then zero each individual empty cluster on a hard drive. If it is done by 10pm Eastern we are getting off lucky. The good new is, if that is what they are doing, it speeds up later access, the game should run much smoother, less things like rubber banding and such.

There aren't really and stupid clowns in Ep7-9, if they stick to the books. So maybe the fate of having another Jar-Jar will pass and spare us.
Ep1-6 were really close to the books, so I'm hopeful in this regard, haha! Especially because I loved these books, and movies inspired by books but then doing it all wrong (Harry Potter, LOTR etc etc) usually disappoint me.

Also, I don't think I claimed to know all. But It has the been the longest downtime since I've been around, and 1 full day out of 2 months,
is not bad. A lot of current games are down for a day when new patches come out.

So therefore, my observations and other peoples comments led me to my conclusion that it doesn't happen often.

Yeah, I founded the Black Sun pirate Outpost "XTS Outpost" on Talus roughly 2 weeks ago, and ever since I am madly recruiting friends and all their alts to come join me. I'm currently at 47 citizens, and in theory ranked up to 3 yesterday. Couldn't check it out yet for some reason :D
So yeah, I'm running an amazingly decorated RP place, south of Whitefall, just north of the swamps. Whoever is seriously interested in the city, send me a mail to Picha ingame, and I'll get you the waypoint.
According to my plan, I will have 55+ citizens by sunday, when I will in theory rank up to 4, if that's currently possible, and also get my first throw-out on politician XP. Working for the shuttle port, as there are currently 13 player shuttles on Talus, and the cap should be 15, so I am hopeful.

=) Whoever wants to know more, give me till tomorrow, when the med-center will be up and running and decorated, and then you can come visit ;)

I have a couple of grinding armor composite sets sitting around in my house, you can just have one. It's not a big deal, really. I'm sure there are others that can help too, a grinding suit costs between 35 and 50k. I make 700k with one buff length mission run, if I'm keeping on it without running afk all the time.
So don't worry about it. Give me an ingame name and I'll shoot you some.
I also have a doctor that gives out free buffs for those who claim to know me ;)

I've always wondered how far / serious RP'ers go. Example, if you're RP'ing a hiking expedition, with all the gear and a scoutmaster or some such. A jolly jaunt across the hills if you will. If a krayt suddenly appears and eats half your team, do you suddenly start RP'ing a krayt enhanced T21 wielding master rifleman with full composite, or do you continue being the hapless and helpless survey expedition team til someone rescues you?

Well, we don't have Krayts on Talus, but if we go hiking together and make it an RP event, think of it as producing a movie, and the players are actors. Say you go hiking in an area where Krayts live, you don't want in with a hat and sunglasses on and then suddenly get surprised. Chances are you're prepared to kill the damn bugger. If it kills half the team anyway, that means half the team will need medical attention :D
It's different, and depends on the crew and on the planning. Usually RP is amongst players and storyteller props on live. Creatures and NPCs *usually* don't merge in. But going on a roleplay Krayt hunt, obviously includes the Krayt.

No idea how to explain it properly. I've been roleplaying for years and years, and there are always people making fun of it. But as said, I expect tolerance, in return for my tolerance. Everyone enjoys the game their own way.

That being said, whether I get along with you, or not, whether you even care, or not, you are all important. Without you, the server would feel lifeless...I play this sort of game to interact with others, good or bad, right or wrong. The entire spectrum of playstyles, desires and expectations are what bring games like this to life. Losing any one aspect of the player-base would merely detract from this. Even the trolls and elitists have a place.


All of THAT being said, I have a question for anyone on "The Team".

Since I have had no problem with paying a monthly $15 subscription for games (I've been doing so for the last 14 years, in one game or another), I've pretty much decided to budget for that amount to put towards the SWGEmu Project. My question is this--Since the donations taken in monthly are usually more then enough to cover current costs ( I hear there is a surplus--correct me if I am wrong), what do you suggest I do with this budgeted money? Should I just set it aside for that rainy day when the project needs a quick infusion of cash? Are there future, scheduled expenditures I am unaware of that I could save my donations for? Or, perhaps I should just make the monthly donation and let you folks decide?
