Basilisk move

Updated November 29, 2012
The SWGEmu Staff

Basilisk move

Due to random issues with our current server we are forced to move Basilisk and our Database to a new box.

UPDATE November 29th 2012

Since this announcement was posted our host FDC started experiencing numerous network issues too. Because of that and because of the constant hardware failures and random server box crashes we have decided to switch hosts and we will be moving our server to SoftLayer Technologies, Dallas 05 data center (https://www.softlayer.com/about/datacenters/dallas-five). They are a bit more expensive but come highly recommended, we will adjust our monthly donations goal accordingly.

Here is brief a summary of what is happening:

At around 1PM EST (check your local time here (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Basilisk+move&iso=20121129T13&p1=179)) Basilisk, our Database and our Global registration will be taken offline.
Basilisk and Database will being moved to a new machine in Dallas, Texas
The SWGEmu Website, Forum, our IRC server and TC: Nova will remain as they were.

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/4497/newserver1.png

Basilisk and our Database will experience an extended period of downtime (approximately 24 hours, but we are not sure how long it will take to copy all of our files from one box to the other). The downtime will allow us to backup Basilisk Database and move Basilisk and our Database to the new machine and have it tested and ready.

During this downtime our global registration will be disabled to prevent creation of bugged or broken accounts.

PLEASE NOTE: To do all this a Database wipe will not be necessary, all your characters, items, credits, XP, etc will be saved.

I know you do not know me from Adam..or eve...
But FDC is not where you want to be, there are many issue as you have see and I almost lost my company because of those issues
I know they offer great boxes are cheap prices...hence to make up for Tier connections and bandwidth.

I only suggest looking at say The Planet or a better data center.

Not meaning to bash or insult in any way.
I know you want the best for this community and so I offer ideas and my time in the hole as it were.

EnJoY
Dog out ...

PS. I was a GSp for 12 years and have had many data centers...FDC is not one I recommend.

Great news in regards to a server upgrade that doesn't randomly shut down but I'm with Dog on this one... Though I'm not a GSP FDC have a rubbish repuation for stability etc etc

I'm sure myself and the rest of the community would gladly donate to fund a move to a much more capable data centre...

As with Dog I'm hoping you don't see this as a criticism, more a suggestion though I'm sure you guys have chosen the best solution for you... :)

How far apart are the rooms? can we get a measurement? are there windows? perhaps a nosey neighbor that likes to run their vaccum at a bad time? whats the deets?

I was slightly confused too when I first read the announcement. It's clear now though. When the server host gets the new box (in a couple days), they will tell the emu team, team tells us, server goes down for roughly 48 hours or so, server comes up all nice and shiny, we all smile. Yay!

48 hours isn't the absolute time, its just extra time in case something goes wrong. It's better to be given a longer time and surprised it was way shorter than the allotted time then to be told the short time and then given bad news that it will take longer than expected.

Good call by the team to move to a new place of business. It's not worth putting the money down into the old server service that obviously had serious issues.

Seems strange that a large hosting company that provides a lot of dedicated servers would not have the hardware on hand. Moreover, I would think this is a rack mount system.

Anyway, nice to see the move. So we are looking at over 2k a month in just server charges? Looks like it's time to donate a few more green backs.

No, i think the overall monthly goal will be around 2k, we got this box for around 1.6k per month.

Actually, it would see, strange to me if a company with good financial guys was wasting money by having hardware lying around unused instead of bringing it in on lease as required :)

It's a fact, the team is made up primarily of masochists and would be at a complete loss if there was not a dedicated crew of acid-tongued community members who can do everything better than the team does...but somehow, well, doesn't.

Pretty much the same thing, we moved from AMD to Intel and we will have larger SSD's but less HDD space.

EDIT: I think we went over 5k in the last few months, but its $50 per 1k if or when you go over 5k limit, so not that big change in monthly costs.

24 hours eh? Tomorrow is friday and weekend is coming. Assuming technical difficulties arise with the move, will there be someone working at the new host to fix it during the weekend? Or would we have to wait till monday?

Not asking for an ETA or something like that. We all know sh** can happen. I'm just curious about their work shifts. :)

OLD AMD Opteron 6128 Passmark: 4,999

The new is 6 cores the old is 8 cores, but the new scores alot higher in overall processing power... But then again I am pretty sure we were never lacking processing power...

Well thinking about this, if they would do a Miami location, has more fiber backbones than any other east city, it would benefit Euro and South America, but not the Aussie/Asia people. Then if we do a west coast, which I think San fran has the most backbones, the opposite would happen. Not sure how many different countries we are dealing with though.

I say move to USA ... :-p

Ping should be as good if not better!
Better data center, better tier 1 providers.

I feel the game will be way better in terms of play.

Ping test the data center:

173.192.68.18

http://www.iwebtool.com/ping

For those that do not know how to ...

OR

open a shell prompt (in Microsoft Windows, the Command Prompt or MS-DOS Prompt on Start Menu)
go to RUN, then type "CMD" when the black window pops up type: "ping" followed by a space and the IP address: 173.192.68.18
press the Enter (or Return) key .. looks like this:: ping 173.192.68.18

This will give you true readings from your house...per say.

If you can rush it and get the whole thing done in about 8 hours, you have my permission to make it happen at 9 AM EST tomorrow (Friday). Otherwise you can do it at 3 AM EST on Saturday. Since I live in New Mexico it doesn't matter if the server is in Dallas or Denver as the distance is about the same. I am looking forward to a more stable game but I am already having withdrawal symptoms by not being able to play the game. This is going to be one of the longest days of my life. I hope everything goes smothly and there are no issues so we can get back in and coontinue to play as soon as possible.

A lot of people are talking about better pings and whatnot, will this actually affect anything other then the server randomly going down? Will there actually be a performance increase or is that just wishful thinking? I apologize if this has been answered or explained already. I’ve read the whole thread but am still a little confused about what to expect from this....

There probably wont be a huge increase in performance, if any. But it should stop huge lag spikes caused by network issues FDC has been having and should prevent random server box crashes.

Whats the IP of the "old" server? Just to compare..

Got 145ms to new Data Center from germany. To "old" Server I had 210. Last days 280-400ms

i just did a ping check, i used to get 191 to the old server, right now im getting 161 on average. And i live in Norway, so my ping should not be that different from yours.

If ping drops from 191 to 161 ingame, ill be a happy camper. that 30 ping does actually make a difference.

I live in Louisiana and was getting between 75 and 102 every time I logged in, and a lot of bandwidth loss. I always knew when the server was getting ready to crash, my bandwidth would jump to 500+ and within minutes the server would go down. Since the move however, my ping is a constant 42, which is great. I am also not noticing any rubberbanding or weapons lag. At least not any lag that wasn't just plain common to SWG at release. Anyone remember those dumb weapon lags? There would be no animation and it would look like the game locked or crashed, then suddenly either you or the npc was dead? My ISP also increased my speed today, for free, it doubled from 15 to 30, and it runs stable between 15 and 32, so all around, I am very happy.

Thanks EMU team. Great work and when I find a job I will be sure to donate as much as I can. If I get this job that I recently applied for I could potentially pay an entire month's worth of what it cost for the new server....:)

I'm getting about 230ms ping here in oz since the move which is an improvement. Very smooth transition team! Bas is back up and running alot sooner then I had anticipated. I see Vlada asking for more players online. Would it be worthwhile to allow us 3 toons online for a day so we can see how it handles something closer to 3k players?

I am on the east coast in the mid Atlantic region. My ping went from 150 to 70. load times have been cut in half and the lag I used to experience is still present, but very small amounts in largely populated area. Certainly a noticeable improvement.

depending on the serverload i get a ping between 140 and 175 (living in germany)
175 is the same ping i had to the FDC server but i got far less rubberbanding, packet loss in general is nearly 0% all the time and Ld nearly never happens. just got 1ld in the last 24 hours.

You probably don't want to hear this, but it sounds like a password issue. I have had this happen to me, but when I shut down the client and use the right password, it works. This is probably not the case for you, because I am sure that you have done that, but I thought I would throw that is there.

Living in Phoenix I had the benefit of closer proximity to Denver. My previous pings were between 50-70ms. Now I'm seeing 100-120ms, spiking as high as 170ms quite frequently last night. Occasional rubberbanding - nothing near like it was on the old server. Definitely much much better, and as we spread the word of SWGEMU (everyone is Liking SWGEMU on FB and boasting about it on their walls, right?????) hopefully we can grow with enough donations (hey, if you really enjoy the game treat it like a PayToPlay game and set up a $10 or $15 or whatever you're comfortable with recurring monthly donation) we may soon see more than one game server.

Monca10, have you had success yet? I searched the forums and pretty much the solution is relaunching the LPE launcher.

Something you could try is reboot your computer, bring up the LPE launcher and at the top right where you select the servers, click the drop-down and re-select Official. Then at the bottom left of LPE click Full Scan (should only take a few minutes).

Then try PLAY.

Hope that helps!

If you get the "connecting to the galaxy" message that just hangs there, that is usually a sign that the server is deadlocked and it is not you. In that case, you just have to wait until TA gets to it and fixes it.

pbmbcrocbaiter
12-01-2012, 07:28 PM
Any idea of when it will be back up now that it's down again?

Arsinoe
12-01-2012, 07:32 PM
It totally depends on what caused the deadlock and how long it takes TA to fix that and do the restart.

I jumped into the game last night before the restart and I was amazed at how fast my crafting tools loaded up. This was right outside CNET and I hardly experienced any lag. My ping runs from 48ms to 50ms and I am further away from Texas than I was from Denver.

Things will be far better here then at FDC.

Better everything all the way around, no matter how you slice it.

Solid ping of 44ms and no lag.
