Basilisk maintenance - 7/14/12

We are finally going to get the new SSD's we so desperately need. With those installed server lag spikes during saving will be drastically be reduced and only time server is going to be locked is during initial startups, first 10 minutes or so.

Expected downtime will be at least 24 hours.

<@Status> Basilisk is now ONLINE

http://www.heathersanimations.com/Computers/download.gif

PLEASE NOTE: Logon server will be take offline too which means that TC: Nova will be inaccessible during Basilisk maintenance.

If you need support please submit a ticket to http://support.swgemu.com (http://support.swgemu.com/) or join our IRC #swgemusupport channel.
As always TC: Nova and Basilisk server status are available on our front page www.swgemu.com (http://www.swgemu.com/) or on our IRC #serverstatus channel.

We apologize for this inconvenience, thank you for your continuous support and and hope to see you on Basilisk and TC: Nova as soon as they back online.

Considering the SSDs were running almost endlessly its no wonder they died but they lasted for a good while. Im curious though what size do the SSDs have to be to work the way you need them too like to support say the 3k cap.

Server upgrade pizza and beer party for the team? Pizza and beer on their own dime, of course. (that was a bad joke, nothing more)

Out of curiosity, what are the specs on the server? Just wonderin if we're allowed to see, and I didn't find anything poking around the forums.

They have posted the specs of the servers here in the past. They are very open about these things. I doubt they will reply today as they are busy withthe repairs but I know the specs are in recent forum posts that only go back a couple weeks.

I'll try to review my subscriptions and see if I get lucky to find one of those links for you.

Hello sunshine!

What is this thing called "sunshine"? Is that what you get when you step outside? Haha!

On a side note, I know information on the server hardware is posted somewhere, but have the devs considered doing a raid setup on their SSD's? Also, heads up this past week on newegg.com they had the Vertex3 240gb SSD's for under $120 :)

Anyone who complains about this should get and automatic /kicktothegroin and a /punchintheface. I don't care when it goes down, as it should be a known fact that the Dev's do have RL priorities as well. I'm grateful that they are even taking time out of their weekend to do this, when they could be spending time doing something around their house, like fix those leaks up stairs or water their lawn before it completely dies. Oh wait, that's what I have to do....

But first, time to hit that donate button again.

You definately dont want to use the garden variety SSD in this scenario. SSDs have a limited number of writes and they were probably reaching their limit, hince the rubberbanding on saves.

I am thinking that the Devs are installing nice new Industrial Strength SSDs that can handle significantly more writes but also come at a price much greater than $120.

Like you, Drogomoss, I am facinately by this thing called sunshine. I must go investigate, though perhaps a shower first might be in order :)

Oh you silly Sith... SSD not STD! What a difference a letter can make. And no, condoms will not protect you from SSD crashes.

But incase this is a valid query as to the nature of SSDs

SSD - Solid State Drive http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ssd#Commercialization

And specifically from the wiki post
SSDs have no moving parts to fail mechanically. Each block of a flash-based SSD can only be erased (and therefore written) a limited number of times before it fails. The controllers manage this limitation so that drives can last for many years under normal use.[80][81][82][83][84] SSDs based on DRAM do not have a limited number of writes. Firmware bugs are currently a common cause for data loss.[citation needed

The controllers, I imigine were have to work really hard to manage the SSD storage because so many of the cells had reached their limit. Hince the rubber banding

I believe the SSD exchanging is done by the hosting company / datacenter where the server is stored at, and not by any of the devs if i read correctly last time i saw TA post about it , might be wrong, but i don't believe its any of the devs that are on site now, first of it would require a certain amount of security access just to get into a datacenter, you don't just walk in from the street :) , in Denmark our datacenters have fingerprint scanner machines and what not, its multi million dollar hardware thats stored at places like this.

We are in a similar position to you... We have 60+ in our township and expected to rank up to city round about now, I'm just wondering whether the server will pick up from where we left it or whether we will have to wait for next week (assuming their are any rank 4 slots left on Tatooine) as our cities weekly update time seems unaffected by any rollbacks or downtime.

I fully appreciate its in Alpha right now but I'm cursing my bad luck at the moment if we miss out on a city upgrade!

That is true, its no staff here who physically change the SSD. that job takes, what? 5 min? What staff will do is probably reinstall every thing needed to be on the disks and thats what takes so long.

I would also assume based on my job as a Systems admin, that a full backup of the DB would be done first, to make sure the most recent data is available. Followed by replacing the drives, restore the backup, and rebuild the RAID. With testing done after the rebuild is complete to make sure all is good. Mind you I don't know the exact steps being followed, that's just how I'd do it :)

Is there any concern with the SSDs about endurance problems. They have a finite write count for the memory on them: http://www.storagesearch.com/ssdmyths-endurance.html

I'm not a computer hardware guy, but with 1000s of people playing all at once, will the lifetime of the SSDs be a month or 2 before having to replace them?

PaulLeger

SSDs manage their sectors themselfs today, its called 'wear leveling'. It really is only a question of data quantity.

wouldnt think so, the SDD's are just a storage of 1's and 0's albeit much faster, code upgrades and migration still have many particularities to deal with im sure.
