20th/21st June IRC Downtime

The SWGEmu Team

IRC Network Downtime

IRC was down for a few minutes because of rumors of a security issue. These ended up being false.

The ircd configuration file for Unreal IRCD:

/* Cloak keys should be the same at all servers on the network.
* They are used for generating masked hosts and should be kept secret.
* The keys should be 3 random strings of 5-100 characters
* (10-20 chars is just fine) and must consist of lowcase (a-z),
* upcase (A-Z) and digits (0-9) [see first key example].
* HINT: On *NIX, you can run './unreal gencloak' in your shell to let
* Unreal generate 3 random strings for you.
cloak-keys {
"and another one";
"and another one";

My guess was that these were left default, making it easy to un-hash the IPs. Just a guess though. Regardless using the command it suggests "./unreal gencloak" should get it running again, assuming the keys weren't compromised another way.

IRC back up, passwords rehashed, banning troublemakers.

Are the servers going to be down for an extended period of time? minutes? hours?

Game servers have nothing to do with IRC, TheAnswer is probably sleeping as he was up working (on the servers) very very late into his morning's hours.

Oh... the post seemed to correspond with the server shutdown. Okay, thanks for the update.

OK, I'm pleased I saw this thread.

I woke up, switched on the PC and saw the servers were down.

So did it properly, instead of posting here asking what's up I went to IRC. Only to find it silent and whenever I post I get a 'you need voice' and have no idea what the hell that means (still new to IRC).

Oh well perhaps I need to do RL stuff for a bit then.

That just means the channel was muted. But IRC is back up now.

Crappy hackers!

I hope Theanswer has set his alarm clock.

There was no hack involved here. None of our services were compromized.
