End of Liberator Milestone

End of Liberator Milestone means SWGEmu is ready for Alpha Testing

When work on the Object Restructure first started back in spring of 2009, it looked like that there was nothing else standing in our way and that 1.0 was closer than ever. But after only a few months of development, the SWGEmu Team realized that the OR was not a simple rewrite of the old code. The OR was going to take much longer than they originally anticipated. Years of grueling work followed, team members came and went, one temporary play server was replaced with another. After millions of lines of code and thousands of man-hours our dedicated Development and QA Teams has SWGEmu finally ready for the next step, Alpha Testing.

When will the End of Liberator (EoL) Milestone be reached?

We expect it to be in April but the exact date is not set. This announcement is to notify everybody that we are about one month away from the Liberator wipe.

The Development Team needs YOUR help on TC: Nova to test the current OR code. Please logon to TC: Nova, pick a part of the game you are familiar with and start testing and submitting bug reports. Everything and anything implemented needs to be tested and retested. If you are not sure what you should do or you want to participate in a more coordinated and focused testing effort then please join our QA and Dev team in our IRC #openqa channel. If you are unsure where or how to submit a bug report, please check our "How to report bugs on Bug Tracker (Mantis) (http://www.swgemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22463)" guide.

What happens when EoL Milestone is finally reached?

When the EoL Milestone is reached it is time for some seriously massive stress testing. Liberator will be wiped and replaced with the latest OR code from TC: Nova, stress testing period will last a minimum of one month and then another wipe of Liberator will occur. During that time we hope that all major stability issues, bugs and exploits will be found and fixed so our goal of "no more Liberator wipes" can be achieved. This will be a crucial period for the OR code and for this project as a whole, everything done so far will need to be tested during that time. To reduce the likelihood of future Liberator wipes, it is imperative that everyone does their best to help the Developers find and fix as many bugs, exploits and stability issues as possible. If major items are not discovered until after the stress test then more wipes of the new Liberator server might be necessary.

Month of stress testing is over, what then?

Liberator will be wiped after the stress test. New play-test server will be launched, for now we will call it Alpha, actual name will be determined at some later date. This will mark the beginning of SWGEmu Alpha Testing stage.

Please be aware that even after the new Alpha server is launched some major fixes and additions to the code may require database wipes. We will do our best to keep database wipes to a minimum, whenever possible we will try to save your character data. We will give advance notice of an upcoming DB wipe. Always keep in mind that this project is still in Alpha Testing and that even though we can clearly see the light at the end of the tunnel, we still have a long way to go before we are ready to release 1.0 to the public so permanent play servers can be created.

Closing

We know that everyone is getting excited about the new Alpha play server that we are targeting for launch some time in May or June. We do not know the exact date it will be ready, but we will be pushing the OR code to Alpha on a permanent basis once all key systems are working as intended and we feel very few future wipes will be necessary.

Appendix

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the term, the OR is a comprehensive standardization of all of the code for SWGEmu. Over the years, many different developers have all worked together to submit code to the project. While this has allowed the Developer team to make great progress in recreating the Pre-CU experience as a whole, it has made submitting and integrating new code difficult. You can think of the old code base as a huge, overstuffed filing cabinet. All of the information is in there somewhere, but everyone who put things into the cabinet used a different filing system. The OR has taken everything out of the filing cabinet, pruned files, reorganized the folders, and attached new legible labels to everything. Code standards have also been set, which significantly reduced the amount of time it takes to commit code changes to the official, public test center (TC: Nova).

During the OR, in addition to standardizing the code base, a decision was made to switch from MySQL to BerkeleyDB in order to both reduce CPU usage and help us achieve our goal of eliminating crash-based rollbacks.

Wow. I want to help if I can figure out how to actually understand this version of SWG, using the easy-mode/nge brain with which I'm sadly afflicted. But until then:

Let me just say - WOW! I'm so happy that I've been at least watching and sending good thoughts, while the energy has been exploding and so much progress so quickly has been achieved! Thank you! You have totally made my day - I mean, You Rock!

Probably around the time 1.0 is finished and released and right before the live server is launched.

Dear Devs , every person whos involved in this project , and for sure , the players :THANK YOU ALL , FOR SUCH A NICE TIME ,possibly the best ive ever had in a game ..since the old days.
Thank you , and keep your heads up.Together we WILL do it.

um aint the OR is Alpha state right now ? and whats the difference between Alpha and pre-alpha-OR-code? EOL probaly be a focus toward OR_code for "main" server to increase "testing" of the OR code?

dont get me wrong, progress is always good,no mater the form, but I just don't see the big deal since nothing game_play wise is going to chance (will still have broken mechanics and non-implemented ones) so between Nova and Alpha nothing is going to chance right?

tho its good there be a single code focus now :)

um aint the OR is Alpha state right now? and whats the difference between Alpha and pre-alpha-OR-code?

OR is still in the Pre-Alpha state, once everything on the EoL Milestone list is crossed off OR code will be in the playable Alpha state. Main difference is playability, amount of content , number of working professions, sustainable player driven economy, stability, etc.

EOL probaly be a focus toward OR_code for "main" server to increase "testing" of the OR code?

We will be using the more stable OR code on the test-play Alpha server because hundreds of players trying to use and abuse every aspect of the game in a more stable and playable environment can find and report more bugs than just a handful of QA guys on an unstable server, wipe prone, test server.

Everything devs do, EoL Milestone, Beta Milestone... is another step towards 1.0

Is there a time frame of when it will be announced that there will be a time frame of...actually I am just excited at the prospect of alpha approaching. That's a huge step and while I am sure nobody is looking forward to the unforeseen amount of possible wipes before nobody no longer has to worry about their characters disappearing every month or two or six including the team working on the project! heh This is truly awesome that the road grows ever shorter. Ive been meaning to ask, on the GCW content, its listed only as GCW and all red in the project update list, is any of that content being worked on, or scheduled to be worked on before going into the alpha launch (faction missions, faction points, ranks, and faction perks) not to be confused with the pub 14 base placements and special forces content GCW.
Need me some imperial uniforms, and wouldn't mind my AT-ST :)
Id really just be happy with faction destroy missions, I can grind faction points for months while the rest gets implemented.

It shouldn't be too hard to design a code to award players with faction points and stuff. I could probably even write it if I wasn't so busy with school.

I agree with you here totally, SWTOR graphics are aimed at the retarded.
Well, i didn't dislike the graphic of TOR per se (in fact, it was one of the few things in that game that i liked), but only in its context (with its predefined story-driven, on-rails character progression which utilized the scenery only as a backdrop for a few minutes of questing).
For an openworld type, sandbox-like game they seriously lack in immersion.

Pre-CU Professions with 2011 SW:G Content would be perfect.

No, I disagree. Pre-CU content was mainly based on community interaction and auto-generated content. No need of dev's work.

2011 NGE-SWG Content was the sum of years of DEV's added content. This kind of content had peaks for days/weeks after launch and then deep bottoms as forgotten content. Examples are Dead-zone, WD quests, Nym revamp. Only collections and istances was a long term content add.

This is my opinion.

One of the EMU projects is attempting to revive the Game as it stood December 14th, 2011..............All the content pushed in before the end and all the other stuff we wish that the pre-CU SWG Devs had actually thought up and added before the CU.

I'd wonder about how difficult it would be to reverse engineer the 12/1/11 SW:G into the 3/31/05 SW:G and make sure the professions were of the pre-CU variety.

Oh I wholeheartedly agree that Player Created Content pre-NGE rocked socks. But....I loved running the Hoth Instance with friends to go kill the Wampas and Defend or Invade the base. I enjoyed the Tusken King Instance. The IG88 instance was fun as well as the Nightsisters Instance. Bounties in Space were cool as well since you couldn't just face roll your specials and wtfpwn someone...you needed skill and good parts. I would exclude the Meatlump King Themepark because sending Newbs out to hunt down the Meatlump King was as always an Epic thing to do without being truly mean.

All the OG themeparks got revamped over time....Rebel and Jabba's saw it the most...Don't know if Imp TP did...and the Valarian and Gungan ones just got shut down or ignored for almost a decade.

PvP and profession grinding can only hold someones attention for 'so' long....after a while Developer created content is needed to ensure a games longevity to the next billing cycle...now obviously with the Emu....they are doing what they are doing the way they want to do it...and there is Support for it..

I'm just spitballing here.

i'm sure whenever they end liberator they will have an event, check the event section on the forums palo and there is player housing on TC:Nova at the moment, space won't be in until after they have got a carbon copy of the swg they want and for your last question i think suncrusher is going to be basically the new alpha server thats coming out if anyone can clarify that would be great :)

I played SWG with very few breaks from early 06 to the 15th of September in 2011 (billing error caused me to miss the deadline..).

Played almost every MMO out there, or at least the MMOs that are mentionable, and not a single one was even remotely as good as SWG, not even TOR. None of them offer the experience of SWG. I don't know what it was about the game but I could just play it for years and never ever once be bored. There was always something to do, always something to craft, some collection to work on, some place to explore, or more importantly some awesome person to hang out with.

And that may be what sets SWG apart from all other MMOs in the long run, the community.

Can't wait.

The NGE content filled a gap perfectly. A game based on just one way content is doomed to fail. What a game needs is variety. NGE provided that. Some of the later content was really good. I wouldn't mind seeing the GCW, Some of the instances, Collections, Atmospheric flight and storyteller implemented at some point. Hell I wouldn't even mind seeing some of the Legacy quests, the well written ones.

We even had developer created content pre-CU and pre-NGE .........all those NPC's that had the little quests or missions..heck..I didn't get my Meson Telescope from a Vendor, I did a random mission.

We just needed more stuff to do for the days when PvP was too /facepalm or you'd gotten tired of grinding out another 3 profession mastery's.

RoTW was a good start (even though it was post Patch 14.1)....and you could see from the success of its' sales that the player base was Content Starved.

I enjoyed the game for 7.5 years. The player generated content is the best. What set this game apart was and is the community. We worked well together and are doing so now. I can't wait for alpha!

Jubba,
Thank you! Look for you in game. On TC Nova, I made a toon named Kote Cabur. When alpha goes live I will do the same name...look forward to meeting you!

Yes the community is surely what makes this game amazing. What makes SWGEmu so amazing is that people here are not only from the SWG community that we all know and love, but they are also the people who love SWG the most. The best of an awesome community, I surely cannot wait for alpha ^_^.

THIS.

Could not have said it better myself. The most appealing factor for me to stay with SWG over the years was the community, as well as some of the unique features that weren't removed like housing and cities. I wasn't thrilled with the CU and definitely not happy with the NGE, but while there was still a community, I was still playing.

All I hope for is that same community to come back. It would be impossible to have the same number of players SWG had in 2003/2004, but if there's enough interest to have 1 very populated server, I'll be happy :)

I can not wait until Alpha is live and stress testing completed. Once we can have legitimate server or servers that people can all join and remain on. That will be AWESOME.
