Website and Database Move

January 7th, 2012
The SWGEmu Community Division

Hello everyone,

Continuing our changes to increase and improve Core3/Engine3 development, it was deemed necessary to lighten the developer's administrative workload on the servers. The SWGEmu website and database, which are currently on the Chicago box, will be transferred to our new box, which we call the Community Box. The old Denver box will continue to run Liberator unchanged. The Community Division department, Site Services, will operate this server and it will host:

The SWGEmu Homepage - www.swgemu.com (http://www.swgemu.com/)
The SWGEmu Community Forums - plus one archive version
The SWGEmu Community Wiki
Mantis Nova Bugtracker - plus two archive versions
JIRA/Fisheye
MySQL Database
Global Registration
Biophilia's SWG PreCU Scrapbook v5.1

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/4559/bwserver6.png

What will happen:

Core3/Engine3 developers will get the server in Chicago to be dedicated to TC: Nova and TC: STM
All items listed above will be moved as-is to the new Community Box
Liberator on the Denver server will remain unchanged

What does all that mean:

Liberator and TC: Nova will be on separate hardware boxes, hardware failure of one box won't affect both servers.
Developers will be able to manage the Chicago box as they need to best benefit development, without spending time on community stuff.

How long will Website and Database be offline?

We expect downtime to be less than 24 hours for all things on the website.

PLEASE NOTE: Test Center, Liberator/Nova/STM, IRC will NOT be affected during the downtime but a new person will not be able to register to play on TC. The Nova/STM move will happen at a later date.

- The SWGEmu Community Division

UPDATE:
Site is back online using the new Community Box. Please report any issues to Support: Site Services Issues (http://site.swgemu.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15).

How expensive are monthly operating costs now with a third server?

Third, Community box has been around for months now, monthly costs are still the same as they were back in November.

November had the following expenses:
FDC for three dedicated servers = $897.00
BurstNet for Windows virtual private server = $7.95
Xzibition for IRC virtual private server = $8.76
TOTAL EXPENSES = $913.71

Weren't both Liberator and Nova running on the now "Liberator Box"? So, if all three servers have been around for months, what was running on the now "Community Box" previously?

Yup, as far as i know they are still on the same Denver box, and Community box was being prepared for the move, Site Services probably has more info on this, my involvement in the actual move began when and ended when I posted this. ;)

P.S. This move probably should have happened months ago, like it was planed. But some of the staff members went MIA, others were just too busy IRL and didnt have time for SWGEmu, so everything was put on hold, up until now.

Probably not, but if something goes wrong, like it usually does around here, well... Better to say 24 hours and if everything goes according to plan, finish in 2 or 3 hours, than to say 2 or 3 hours and then when something goes wrong, blah, blah, blah.

No wipe, 100% database dump and 100% file copy. And remember, this has NOTHING to do with the game servers Liberator/Nova/STM at this stage.

24 hours to move a website from one server to the next?

It takes quite awhile to transfer many GB's of MySQL data and get it reloaded. The copy has already been tested with "old" data but we need to shut this site down, copy the current data and then finish tweaking the setup. I figure this whole process is 4-6 hours if things go perfect - how often do things go perfect :icon_Duh: - but also remember the DNS change will be up to 24 hours to propogate too.

Vlada did a good job replying but I wanted to expand it a bit more.

We got the third server at the beginning of September I think. The purpose is for a brand new site with "updated" technology on the server side. The tools we are using were just updated/released a few weeks/months before we got the third server. The tools will provide the best, free environment for security, access control, crash isolation and data backups. I won't get into all the details but there is no "Easy Button" :icon_Shocking: for cutting edge server technology that is FREE...so it has taken a lot longer than anticipated.

The new site isn't ready yet so we stopped working on that and shifted gears to copy Chicago to the Community Box so the Developers could have a Nova/STM dedicated server sooner. The Devs need this to keep progress moving in the code, so that change took extra time as well.

The management of Liberator moving to Site Services is also part of the future plan that figures into this equation to help the Developers focus on Nova/STM. We are constantly trying to improve development and this current announcement is not the end of the upcoming changes

The Law of Project Management comes into play here....there are three variables in every project and only two can be controlled. You can pick any two but not three: scope, cost and time. In SWGEmu we have a specific scope/task with almost no money (relative to big gaming companies) so the amount of time to get the scope/task completed just falls beyond anybody's control. :master:

Why not setup mysql repl and do it IN ADVANCE? It will be one less thing to do when you're actually moving the site and it is down.

And drop your TTL to the absolute minimum. Now. Should have been done when this was idea was being conceived.

Noob question: How do you play SWG Emu without the SWG Cds? From what I've read it seems that SWG Emu is a stand-alone, rather than based off the original SWG installation.
