NOTE: K&H Bank is our Hungarian bank account from which we pay NPO fees, accounting and lawyer fees.

NOTE2: During the summer we had some problems with our provider relating to copyright issues. And even though SOE/LA/Disney had noting to do with those, it forced us to contact SOE/LA/Disney. After 6 months of trying to contact them directly and then through a few different lawyer companies, and after spending over $5,500 we finally got a reply. They just acknowledged that they received our email and that they will let us know when they come to a decision. Sounded a bit generic, but our servers are still up and running so we are hopeful.

Thank you for the report!
This is not looking very shiny... it seems that the account balance will be drifting more and more downwards this year!
What happens when the balance reaches zero?

Its going downwards because of the lawyer costs, until we receive an official reply from Disney we shouldn't have any more of those costs.

Hi all, long time lurker here :P

First things first, I can't praise enough the effort and dedication of the SWGemu team, and the involvement and love shown from the community. Thank you very much.

That said... All that lawyers stuff gives me goosebumps. Besides the obvious, what can we expect from the change of the IP status? Now that Disney controls it, it's a better or worse situation that when Lucasarts/SOE did it?

Actually i don't expect to see a change. We just asked them to honor the deal we have with SOE, and if they decide to do it, what would they need form us if anything. They acknowledged our email/letter more than a month ago and we are still here, so i dont think they consider us as relevant or a threat so I really think we will be able to get to some kind of agreement.

Excuse me if I'm asking something well known but, was that some tacit agreement based on a handshake? Or there is some physical evidence that we can bring to a court if needed?

That decreasing balance is pretty scary. If everyone who plays or owns an account on the forums just donated $1.00 the balance would be going up for sure. Hopefully Disney lets off soon.

Hi, lurker here but I don't think Disney is gonna get anal over a game that has been discontinued for what 3 or 4 years now and only serves a rather niche market that being people who were already playing the game.

Hello,

This was probably asked before but anyway... Are there other ways to contribute to the project financially then Paypal?
I personally got my money blocked by Paypal already in the past, so I refuse to deal with them anymore.
that's why I ask.

It's not about the game, but the IP. Legally, it belongs to them now. Also, because money.

Let's just hope that Disney will just be concerned with the movie and merchandising rights. I read on Steam recently that when Disney shut down LucasArts that some one who was part of the Jedi Knight series released the source code for two of those games, apparently without repercussions. Let's hope they dismiss this as something that is irrelevant, and let us continue to play.

Accepting Bitcoin donations is easy, all you need is an address and wallet to receive the money, plenty of websites just post an address on their main website or you could do it in the forum, copyright lawyers don't play nice, so it's a good idea to put in some failsafe's just in case, you can also avoid a lot of paypal nastiness if everything goes to hell and they try to shut you down and I suspect they will.

I looked at this website after quite a few years and I'm amazed at the amount of progress the devs have made, one thing that springs to mind though is where is the source code? I haven't had the chance to have a proper look for it but one way to prevent this whole project from falling apart if legal issues bring it down is to just post up your code online and making it open source.

Bitcoin addresses look like this and you can send Bitcoins to them through the wallet: 1DFNvBCX2XBE3KaJsKjyWLLPDD5MuxxRiX

Edit: I just got told about the SWG emu code being on repository or something? Anyway keep up the good work :)

I think this is a very important question that will be the deciding factor in weather or not there even is an agreement to honor with disney. If the answer is no it could be a very bad situation we're in.

I played SWG back in beta, then US release, then onto EU when that got released 6 month later - I loved the game and even though I've played mmo's for 15years+ I've never had that same feeling that I had with SWG. Then SOE did what they did best, screw it all up and destroy what was, in my opinion the best game ever made! But no their only aim was money, which meant they had to try and make it more and more like a WoW clone which eventually had the exact opposite outcome and the true "SWG community" as I like to call it, left the game, myself included and all my friends etc.

Long story short, I'm 28 now and I just recently found out about this beauty that SWGemu is! I can't say enough what a great job you guys have done and I hope it will continue for a long long time, cause I've been missing that feeling for many years, and finally it's back! Thanks a lot guys, I'm still very new around here but I will without a doubt from now on do a monthly donation to help the project. Which I think everyone should do.

We will, as soon as Paypal starts accepting them.
Paypal accepting bitcoins will never happen. If you sign up for a coinbase merchant account they convert the BTC to USD immediately so that you're not at any risk of the price fluctuating; their fees are a whopping 1%. I'll start the donation rally and pledge $150 for a Bitcoin donation button.

Here's my know little about the situation tid bit even if you hate those. Disney's two primary concerns would be is someone making profits off of something they own and is this emu/admins hurting the disney image in anyway? I'm sure they have been watching. At least a little bit. Maybe sent basement corner cubicle to check it out. Sounds/looks to me like y'all are doing a great job with everything. I as everybody else hopes Disney keeps their power at bay. I have never seen such a complicated emu run so well.

My feelings exactly and I too will donate monthly because no other MMO I've played ever came close. The work you people are doing with this EMU is astounding and I hope Disney doesn't cause any future trouble. The people playing SWGEMU aren't exactly your standard MMO players and would mostly likely NOT play SWTOR or any other lame..dumbed down future Star Wars MMO that Disney/EA would produce.

Keep up the great work and thank you!

I'm passing the word to my guild with advice to pass it along to their other friends. That declining balance needs to be fixed, especially if we have any serious correspondence with Disney. I'm broke and yet I contribute every month, others with jobs and the like should easily do so, and I'd bet many haven't even thought about it. This is a truly awesome effort being carried successfully by some really great and dedicated folk. Those of us who enjoy the fruits of that effort should well be able to keep up with expenses.

Any thought of doing a kickstarter?
lots of people donate to them,

you can even setup in-game items for contributions such as houses, armor, weapons, ect based on donation amount.

kinda like giving them a reward for donation (i know all your hard work should be enough but we live in a greedy society lol) but not one that would alter the playing field too much (no pay to win models)

Like Vlada said, the only cause of the downward spiral is the lawyer fees. That's not a reason not to donate but a simple yes or no from Disney could solve our financial issue.

Big companies are like big government. When they see something they want to get rid of they generally play the financial game with them, which is letting things take as long as possible until the other party runs out of money and can't win.

So why dont we play like there is no more money and force their hand while there is still a little money left to use? Its going to happen eventually anyway. Why wait till its all gone? Like Vlada said, "Development will go on no matter what." Stop playing their game. If they dont like something they'll come to you. Why burn the purse in the meantime?

Okay.. so I did some math and some of the numbers of december are incorrect.. Again..

December:
Previous Balance from November = $6121.68
+ December donations: $2,997.88.
-
PayPal fees = $175.12
K&H Bank = $2,293.00
Hosting Services, Inc = $226.15
FDC Servers.net, LLC = $199.00
Hosting Services, Inc = $147.38
Softlayer = $1595.34
TOTAL EXPENSES = $4,635.99
December had a total shortfall of $1638.11 with a final PayPal account balance of $4,438.57

THE ACTUAL AMOUNT IS: $4,483.57 ($50 DIFFERENCE IN LOSS)
Looks like a typo between the 8 and 3 numbers being switched around. Should make sure the PayPal balance actually reads the exact amount of the forecast at each month..

Assembla, Inc prices also do not match up to the listed expenses across multiple months. The prices are always different (usually ranging from $19 to $60) but none of those numbers match up to the listed prices at their web site, https://www.assembla.com/plans

----
Softlayer's prices are $754.29/mo. This is their capped amount for their Virtual Servers. Providing that Bas and Nova are both using the same capped limited (although idk why Nova would need as much storage as Bas), the total amount is equal to: $1508.58/mo. A difference is loss of $89.76 in December and an even bigger difference in loss of $242.62 in August.
http://www.softlayer.com/virtual-servers (drag all 3 sliders to the right, the max amount (for a massive machine) is $754.29/mo.

----
The K&H Bank (part of the K&H group) also does not list a lawyer section of their group? Is this some how internal or have you just put the lawyer fee's and bank fee's into the same category? (idk why you'd do that)
https://ebank.khb.hu/publish/kh/en/kh_group.html

----
PayPal fee's also do not add up. The not-for-profit fee is 1.4%, a reduced amount from the standard 3.4% fee. The December's amount of $2,997.88 for example, equals to $41.96 @ 1.4%. Assuming that 300 people donated, a further $20 is added from the static fee. This means there is a difference in loss of an estimated $101.

In the month of November alone there is a loss in difference of:
$132.62 via Softlayer
$101 from PayPal Fees
$10 from Assembla, Inc (assuming that the prices is based on the $49/month model.. although the prices is sometimes shown as $19 but never rises over $60)

Sorry for the assumptions/questions, I am just interested in how the money is being spent.
My friend told me about a group of people who made money from lying about their donations on an emulator of the game 'Dark Age Of Camelot'. He knew the dev personally and contributed some of the code. The devs were making over $1,000 each per month. They didn't sleep much but for the short time that they were making money, they didn't care. They got paid to get experience to then use the experience to apply for jobs - win, win.
I am not making bold accusations. I am just curious, that is all.

Vlada
04-21-2014, 04:32 PM
Okay.. so I did some math and some of the numbers of december are incorrect.. Again..

December:
Previous Balance from November = $6121.68
+ December donations: $2,997.88.
-
PayPal fees = $175.12
K&H Bank = $2,293.00
Hosting Services, Inc = $226.15
FDC Servers.net, LLC = $199.00
Hosting Services, Inc = $147.38
Softlayer = $1595.34

Should make sure the PayPal balance actually reads the exact amount of the forecast at each month.

That's a typo.

Assembla, Inc prices also do not match up to the listed expenses across multiple months. The prices are always different (usually ranging from $19 to $60) but none of those numbers match up to the listed prices at their web site, https://www.assembla.com/plans

We had some problems with Assembla, and they took everything of ours down and wanted to delete it. We no longer use it but i think we are just paying them not to delete or data or something. TheAnswer and Oru should know more.

We are not useing virtual servers we are suing actual servers customized for our needs. And Bas and Nova are on very different boxes and hosted by different companies. You can find their specs here: http://www.swgemu.com/forums/content.php?r=359 You will also notice that Bas has a bandwidth limit, going over it (which we do all the time) brings additional costs.

The K&H Bank (part of the K&H group) also does not list a lawyer section of their group? Is this some how internal or have you just put the lawyer fee's and bank fee's into the same category? (idk why you'd do that)

Is just a bank, funds are moved there so we can pay lawyers, accountants and NPO fees in Hungary in HUF.

Here is a capture of the last few... And its not 1.4%... nor is it 3.4%. For some reason they vary.

It weird actually. for $20 first fee is $1.08 and then its $1.06.

I'll pledge an additional $50 if they add it. I'm not posative but I don't think it costs anything to use the Coinbase service for merchants. They are just charged 1% of any monies received that are transfered out of the account. So if you have donations converted to your local currency and then transfered to your bank, the 1% would be taken from that amount.

since you said you will accept bitcoin when paypal does, you suggest that you want people to donate bitcoin using paypal. the entire purpose of bitcoin is to send money without using a third party. should i write more?

I know that cryptocurrency is the new "best thing since sliced bread" thing, but until we can pay all of our bills with it, and until it is recognized and accepted by all relevant institutions as an actual currency, and our bank and paypal start accepting them, we cant use them.

You can offer us donations in firewood or ladybugs, and while we are grateful for your generous offer, until we can actually pay our bills with those, we must respectfully decline.

So what happens when your 3rd party currency system crashes or goes away? Where does your money go then? Who will trade it for USD then?

Maybe you fail to realize the money scam you have allowed yourself to get sucked into by purchasing fake money with real money. Ask anyone with real money if they would ever trade their real money for fake money in hopes to trade it back for real money later. Who's winning in that situation? The person who issues the fake money or the person who gives their real money to receive fake money in a voucher system. How about we all start trading Cartel Coins from SWTOR and hope we can pay bills with that.

Real financial institutions do not recognize bitcoin because it's not real money. But hey, you want to wrap your paycheck up into some money laundering system and believe you'll get it all back later then be my guest. Maybe you should sit down and try watching The Wolf of Wall Street :)

PayPal isn't a 3rd party, it's very much so like a bank with a real account that holds real money. I've had a MasterCard with PayPal for many years.

People dont seem to understand that we as individuals cant accept money. SWGEmu is a NPO and as such is regulated by certain laws.

You can not donate money to a NPO aka SWGEmu if you dont do it through an institution recognized by law aka banks or paypal. If we exclude one or the other, to whom would you be donating money or cryptocurrency? SWGEmu is not a person, you cant put money in its pockets, its an organization, organisation that by law has to keep books and by law has to keep its money in a bank or a similar monetary organization recognized by law, in our case Paypal. Giving money to one of our staff members wouldn't be the same as giving it to SWGEmu, it wouldn't even be considered donating. So excluding banks or paypal from the donation process is not only unwise, it more than likely illegal.

IF you have bit coins sell them and donate the proceeds to the emu project. Simple.

It's what the project accepts as a form of donation. Although bit coins have monetary value to them, some organizations still see them as an asset, such as shares in a company, and until the whole bit coin revolution catches on it will not be a fully useful form of currency. It doesn't even have conversion rates for different parts of the world, does it?
Regardless.. Like mentioned, sell the bit coins and donate via PayPal.

ok, that's fine. just wanted to offer the idea of accepting bitcoin and then selling them for USD.

So what happens when your 3rd party currency system crashes or goes away? Where does your money go then? Who will trade it for USD then?
the easy solution for your question is trade it for USD and empty the account. i've seen a couple trading sites go down and they try to get everyone their money. (i didnt have anything in my account)

middle two paragraphs = no comment.

PayPal isn't a 3rd party, it's very much so like a bank with a real account that holds real money. I've had a MasterCard with PayPal for many years.
3rd party was the best word i could think of. but if they are taking fee from each transaction, i'm pretty sure that qualifies as a third party.

down right you have an edit function.... To make it easy for yourself, make space between each new quote and write in the "pocket" you get. We also have a multi quote function on the forum.

ok so what i know so far there is not time line as to when this will happen or if this was the CEO's way of calling bluff to shut ppl up about splitting Ebay and PayPal into two companies like Google did ( know cause i own google A and B holding more votes on B) but the thing is since they just said they will hope to see this soon just shows that its a media stunt this follows as an interview days after a shareholders meeting came to say in a Q&A if they would ever see BitCoin as a form of payment and they said yes we could see this cause if not this type of currency can hurt us if we dont have it work for us..

but they also wanna see how this new Company in which companies we come to love own bits of this one called "Circle" its what i been talking about when it comes to buying and selling cryptocurrency with out the three day wait time to see RL cash in your bank account so if anything check em out

so now that more companies are starting to think about adding bitcoin as a form of payment like Dish networks on bill payments and so forth this is a step into the light that PayPal/Ebay is not that far from doing the same thing i say by the end of summer or late winter this all should be some what a beta start of this project but def is risky for them to do so but then again its risky for Dish since they are thinking of merging with another company yet again so idk but their hopper tech an what ever they got seems to be good money and since they swimming in debt yeah bitcoin def help em out..

but based on how much fraud reports Ebay on sales/transactions bitcoin for them is hard cause they might see the same problem spread over but other companies accept bitcoin on the low like Victoria Secrets and overstock.com (if you dont know about this site but seen it on tv before YW..) is another but there is more out there they just dont announce it like that for publicity they wanna work out the kinks before taking on a mass load of ppl who alrdy now to this day keep converting money to bitcoin just to have for safeguard when it comes to paper currency..

but its here if you got to mine from 2009 till now your rich beyond dreams to this new type "digital currency" but to those its just a new leap to new evo..

but Vlada i am sure this site would def be of interest when it comes to forms of payment you guys would like to implement (maybe bitcoin as form of donation like these android crypto devs do as in appdonation)

Unfortunately, I used to work at Disney. Sure, I worked in the IT dept, but I still mingled with all the other dept's. obviously. They do not let IP fall through the cracks, ever. They normally maintain a stranglehold on all IP even if it is simply shelved never to be used again. I will say this however... the ONE thing you have going for you right now is a prior agreement with SOE. Disney may be asshats when it comes to IP, but they are also deadly serious about agreements/contracts almost to a fault. If EMU has proof of an agreement with SOE, Disney will bite the bullet. If not, I expect this to be closed down as soon as they find the time to get around to it, and every single one of us who played it, will get a bill in the mail from the Mouse. ok, im joking about that last part, but after being under their employ... I'm only half joking.

Disney has nothing to do with SWG they may own the "star wars" name and its Subs but SWG is intelectual property Sony and SOE made with rights incorporated with Lucas Arts
and since Sony and SOE still owning the rights to it as of Jan of this yr and with Disney killing/laying off lucas arts and its ppl that means SWG still pertains to SOE as property
we should thank SOE for this cause even tho they closed down SWG a few yrs ago they still came back to say we wanna keep the SWG name and property so they made a
sweet deal one that made SOE think we can be like EA and hold rights for a while like EA so i doubt this will close as a matter of fact SOE may have ****ed up SWG but they saved it from Disney so this is SOE way of Giving it back
to the fans cause they are aware that the SWG emu project is going as a matter o "FACT" i know a friend who his cousin was one of the Devs to SOE before getting transferred into EQ2 project saying he was working with one or two ppl who was
bringing back SWG underground just didnt get to say which project ( didnt wanna get all IGN interview on it) but the Emu aint closing down if anything they wouldnt have to worry about Disney its more of Sony but i doubt any one would even care
unless Disney buys SOE titles but come on really do we have to go there ...

but this is an update to the EBay/PayPal it seems Carl Ichan and major investor with Ebay has gotten into a bit of trouble with insider trading now those who are not familiar with the term should just know that its bad news
with that said Ebay is going to hold off on any projects for now till this investigation is over Ebay is prepared to ease tensions with other investors into the matter and is insuring that things will go on just not right now

i mean so far this past 12 months Ebay has been under pressure from Elon Musk and Carl Ichan to spin off PayPal from Ebay and since Ebay is sure that Ebay/PayPal will stay together for a long while they been getting comments from other traders about the matter but Carl is to blame for sending out letters to other Ebay investors to vote on the spin off gladly i didnt vote on this cause i felt Ebay will fall with out the support of PayPal and all the celeb power they have cause Ebay loses alot of money over fraud and refunds to ppl who dont get their items or get lost in the mail (supposedly)

so with that said its going to be awhile with the rise in BitCoin going past $600 since Dec i figure its going to be a mainstream "digital currency" by next yr so far IRS changed its ruling saying bitcoin and any cryptocurrency is no longer a property but now a value of money problem is that you must report it as "self employed" if you Mine it and they will know this from your ISP ( thanks FCC internet neutral ****) and they will also know from the energy consumption as well ( just how the DEA and FBI know you have a grow house from the heat and energy consumption in your house) the government of this country is still messed up in its own way but they are just not yet ready to trust a digital coin that can get stolen like the Magic the Gathering Xchange or MtGox as some ppl know em by ...

but def you should get cracking on getting bitcoin into your life ppl are making money on donation from litecoin and bitcoin and since then the rise in bitcoin is going back up giving ppl hope again to trade in cryptocurrency

well news aint good this time around it seems David Marcus CEO of paypal is leaving the company to work for Facebook (which is stupid but hey every one wants to work for FB now a days )
this sets back any project to bring cryptocurrency to paypal till a new CEO is appointed and reviews the projects Marcus had planned

June 27th is Marcus last day with paypal dont know when he is to start working for FB but he said that he rather be apart of a group where he can "manage smaller teams" to achieve something grater
i mean ppl in this world fight to make something an call them selves CEO i mean Mark Z made it clear "i am CEO *****" but this dude clearly lost his head

there is worries that all that was said about the future of paypal will no longer see the day of light this yr hence why shares of Ebay dropped when the news broke out that the CEO of PayPal is leaving
FB has stolen alot of good ppl from strong companies and have those companies fall after their departure to FB ppl are starting to think that what happen to Zynga is going to happen to PayPal where all its employees just quit so they
can work for the silicon valley company

I reset my password since its been years but they won't verify the key they sent me so I can't even log in. I'm going to have to create a new PayPal account just for you guys ;) that's why I hate it. Always hoops to jump through.

Anyways when does the next expense report come out? And are there any limits to a donation to an NPO?

Sweet thanks Vlada. I'm new and still getting familiar with how the emu works but if you could find out the answer on donations I'll send you guys some cash to work with. Send me a message when you can answer. I just don't want the IRS knocking my door in at 2am :)

Coinbase can do instant bank transfers in local currency its how Fiverr does all its bitcoin to cash transfers, don't see how using this method would be a problem legally speaking.

Any updates from Disney?

What update would that be? Its not like we have a running connections with them.

Nope. Aside from that generic semi-automated response "We will get back to you", nothing.

I just remember reading that you're awaiting them to respond to whether they'll be honoring the agreement made prior to their acquisition of Star Wars.

Too bad. I hope all goes well and smoothly with that. Lately they've taken a "let it run it's course" stand on IP's.

I'm cautiously optimistic that Disney will realize that taking down the Emu will cause them more harm than good. First of all, this project is supported by a very niche group of players who are either Star Wars fans or just die-hard pre-CU players. Presumably, many here would be willing to fork over money to Disney to try new Star Wars games or even for other Star Wars merchandise. Also, while we are a very small community in the eyes of a behemoth like Disney, hopefully they realize that needlessly crushing SWGEmu would ensure that almost none of us would buy their games and, thanks to the viral nature of social media, many other gamers and Star Wars fans would be reluctant to support their products.

Can you explain what it has to do with them?
I understand they now own the IP. But since all the IP related assets are stored on disks we already own, then I understood that it was OK for us to use it.

Even if we are legally in the right, Disney has the money to drown us in bogus lawsuits. Sadly, it's a fairly common practice for large corporations to just financially destroy smaller projects even if said projects aren't doing anything wrong.
