So 10,363 people playing on a Friday night and probably most paying a monthly fee is a bad thing for a game thats 3+ years old?

I guess you could pay to wait in ques to log into a World of Warcraft server, sometimes for hours. Servers that, after almost 3 years still go down unexpectantly or experience catastrophic lag at times.

You could pay to have a GM e-mail a response to your petition (generally "your out of luck) and never actually see one in-game.

You could pay to join a new server and level 1-60 so you could PVP with people similarly geared. Then have Blizzard open it up to server-wide transfers so that guilds that are 2+ years old can move there en-masse to bash the other un-geared side as Blizzard adds non-instanced PVP.

You don't get the juevenile "Barrens" fanboy banter either.

I guess you could play a more popular game and pay a company who has no regard for you and is so enamored with it's success that it is utterly out of touch with its customers and does what it wants, whenever it wants.

People complained about how NGE changed/ruined SWG, but IMO, as a returning player, it changed it for the FAR better. There are alot of changes I see now that have improved the game as a whole and made it more enjoyable. Gone are alot of the annoyances that made me quit SWG the first time, levelling isn't as tedious, gear decay is gone, and while this did impact traders it made the game far less of a JOB of maintenance than it used to be. Its enjoyable and I wish it had been released this way.

Sony runs a FAR better MMORPG than Blizzard does and while this games not nearly as popular as WoW is, it does have far better customer service and response than WoW does. It's more technically sound, servers dont crash (Ie. the infamous Doomhammer/Downhammer server) 2 years later. They patch things regularly, not every 6 weeks. These are things that matter to me.

WoW's a good game. The lag sucks without question but at least there's something to do. I've played both of these games for 2 years and while I like things that both games do I'm completely bored with both.

Have a fully epic'd Druid on WoW, 60 warrior and a 60 lock along with other 40ish toons and other than getting with a group of 5-40 people there's nothing to do but pvp, which is old.

SWG was always a solo based game but there's nothing left to do. Crafting is gone and there's really nothing to work for so what do you do when you log in? Look for pvp? There's no real point in that with the groups of hackers that are left pvping.

Would love to find a game with a great balance of solo/group content to fit the mood but I haven't found one yet.

SWG had Jedi to work for, they don't anymore, WoW has uber gear to work for but it's more of a time sink than anything else.

I really wanted to try this game. But everything I have seen suggests that hardly anyone plays it anymore. Take this board for example. Not exactly a lot of posting going on.

Someone should see or see if we can get the numbers over the summer. The numbers do seem right, although should be a bit lower since at the time of the original post was about 3 months after NGE which was the final chop that killed SWG's old days.

However, over the spring, alot of players came back (mainly because they were addicted to the community not game)and server pop did go up a bit. Well, atleast Eclipse server did.

I think we need to stop thinking SWG as the old days and like many game reviewers, view it more as a completely different game (which is why i call it now SWG2). Its less painful that way.

I no longer played SWG but here is my solution to the problem it maybe a messy solution but i think it could save the game.

1. Make the game really war, add bonous of some sort for capturing towns and planets. they need to find a way to pit the rebels against the empire more. when i played nothing happened ever.

2. Combine the servers together to get better populations. this seems like it would be the hardest thing to do but its worth a shot.

I love star wars the whole theme but anymore i only check these boards to see when bio ware is taking over so maybe i can try it again

until that day comes may the force be with you

That was probably because of low pop on your server. On Naritus server, back in '03 - '04, there was plenty of PVP going on. And even more so when player cities (and pvp bases before that) came out. I'm talking 100+ avatars on any given base battle, and I know the more heavily pop'd servers had higher battle numbers. It was a great time, and seeing over a hundred fighters, plus AT-ST's, plus double that in pets was a sight I'll wont soon forget. Those days are never going to return because the disappointment for many of the hardcore player/fans is rooted deep (and rightfully so), they have moved on to other games.

I'd like to see servers coalesce, but with SWG having such personal things as land claims and items, it seems like an impossibility. And that might be the only way to bring players back into the game is by increasing server population. I resubscribe from time to time to see what going on in my server and I have to say the main thing that turns me off is only seeing 3-4 blue/purple dots on my radar for all of Theed/Coronet. IMO (as a die hard SW fan) this was the greatest Star Wars game of all time. You created and fully customized you're own being to place wherever you'd like in the Star Wars universe, and have him/her do whatever your heart desired. Placing your very own home to decorate as you please to entertain your friends is amazing. If memory serves me correctly, there was over 30 professions at a time taking up all aspects of fighters, politicians, and traders of the universe. When I just think about it I'm amazed and I want to start playing all over again.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, and just reiterating what most said previously, but if you were a fan of the game from the beginning, well, it's sour grapes. Things were broken at game launch and now are fixed, but at a great cost (of which includes breaking the stuff that wasn't broken!). And if you never played and are an avid Star Wars fan looking into exploring your favorite fictional universe, well... you are left to do so in a barren and almost post-apocalyptic galaxy.

Bummer.

1) Drop the subscription price substantially.
2) Server merging.
3) Advertise. (Starting this 2 and a half years after the game was launched wasn't very smart, wouldn't you say?)

Poor game. Was much better than WoW (which I just quit after a year of playing) in it's prime PreCU. SOE deserves it for crapping out on the players like that. Game won't be here in a year I bet, and with good reason. I'm amazed it's lasted this long. I really wish I could play it again, but the real SWGs been gone the past year and a half. I'll have to look into the www.swgemu.com thing, looks promising.

anyway, RIP SWG

I did the math...that's an average of 415 people a server. Yikes.

I have to say that the past few weeks since I have reinstated my account, I have seen more people online than I did -before- the NGE. At least, on the servers that I play on (Lowca, Tarquinas, Valcyn and Wanderhome). Bria i'm not sure about, as I created a char there -after- the NGE...but I can tell you that I can't walk without stopping every 2 seconds from the lag caused by the number of people and animation in places like Mos Eisley, Dant. Mining/Agro, Reustess and Theed...something that never happened pre-NGE post-CU.

Yes, I was like many of you after the NGE, and stopped playing for most of last year. I thought i'd give it a try again last month and the changes really are suprising.....Crafters are muuuuch more fun to play, the expertise system is quite nice (it is like a dumbed down version of our old skill trees, to allow you to be different from the next guy), most quests and bugs are fixed, entertainers are back, the beast master system is about to be re-introduced in the next chapter (yes, pets are back folks), they are finally packing up all the old houses for those who haven't logged in between late April and the end of May of 2007. So...I think a lot of consolidation between cities will be happening - bringing back a lot of the group play that has been missing for most people for a while now. The Galactic Civil War enhancments are wonderful too, btw. The war is much more in your face than pre-NGE post-CU, and you can truly jump right into it at any time (Reustess)

On the topic of SWGEmu, it is crap, I mean absolute crap...they've been into this forever, and just when they are about to release something that looks stable (and might I add, useable), they decide to re-write the WHOLE thing again. It is a patchwork of more junk than I have ever seen....the idea is sound in principal, but the product is absolute garbage. I wont mention how the guys developing the thing are completely full of themselves - which is probably half the issue...the other half is that they overestimate their talent.

In closing? Those of you thinking of playing for the first time? I think now is as good a time as any. There are plenty of people on to play with, if you're worried, pick Bria...if you cant find someone there, there's something wrong with YOU...not the game or the community. For those of you who haven't played for a while....give it a few weeks of play....I know as a veteran player - I definately like it again (dare I even say re-addicted??)

First off I dont know when you played, you say that it never happened pre-NGE or post-CU, well I am one of those original players and you couldnt be more WRONG, I remeber distinctly loging on and having the server population listing most if not all servers as Heavy some full, the populations was some where around the 300,000 subscribers, I'll bet my family jewels that servers or made half that now if not less.

Yes, I was like many of you after the NGE, and stopped playing for most of last year. Your posts sounds more like a sound byte for SOE, any one who ever played from its inception can tell you that it was never intended to be GCW in your face, it was never intended to be some what of a twitch base system, it was an open sand box, it was a strategic system were you did have to apply effort to craft to battle. taking into account your current stats what gives you the edge, how can i improve my responce time.

On the topic of SWGEmu, it is crap, I mean absolute crap...they've been into this forever, and just when they are about to release something that looks stable (and might I add, useable), they decide to re-write the WHOLE thing again. I wont mention how the guys developing the thing are completely full of themselves - which is probably half the issue...the other half is that they overestimate their talent.

Again your comments are totally unfounded if you consider the game is it was at Publish 14 crap then you never played prior to the CU

In closing? Those of you thinking of playing for the first time? I think now is as good a time as any. There are plenty of people on to play with, if you're worried, pick Bria...if you cant find someone there, there's something wrong with YOU...not the game or the community. I'm glad you enjoy the game I have tried it I played till 2 months post NGE and to me that was pure crap, you have an overly fragmented community, you have endless of archived and even current publications to this DAY, that resoundingly report their analysis on SOE/SWG as a good example of how to destroy your community, or as what not to do, I'm not making any of this up!!!

And no just because some one else doesnt like it you shouldnt leave, all the things that attracted people to the game are gone, the interplay in the community is all but gone, people who wanted to participate but in other ways like entertaining there were entire guilds made up soley of entertainers 250+ members, crafting guilds were you guessed it were all about just crafting, such a tightly nitted community that when we didnt have any new content we made up our own.

My point is this, the game lent it self to a much much broader degree of things and professions that you could tackle and because the game was such utter crap back then as you call it, remember this at know other time has SOE/SWG ever reached that subscriper capacity like they had prior to publish 14.1, it was cricticaly acclamined world wide as one of the greatest MMORPG ever created even with all the bugs and clitchs they game had at release, for 3 solid years it was winning award after award, do you know that blizard is gearing up with Lucas Arts to create Knights of the republic a stars wars 2 type game, keep thinking that SOE or the SWG is so much better now and when they relase it ask your self, why are you paying for an MMORPG when there is basicly no role playing to speak of and the lack of players makes it very difficult to group hunt whe was the last time you were with a nice size group of friends that went out on foot traveled for over 35 minutes to go hunt Rancor
