Smugglers Guide

This is not an effort of one smuggler alone. It is a collective effort of the Smuggler community as we try to better understand our abilities. It is our hope that this FAQ will help newcomers and veterans alike. Special thanks to Kav, who made the terrific effort of getting this FAQ started, Caylin who wrote the previous version, along with everyone in the Smuggler community that's contributed their help in one way or another.

How do I smuggle?
The extent of Smuggling currently is avoidance of contraband scans. You earn this ability at novice and it increases throughout the Underworld tree. Master Smugglers have the highest ability to avoid scans. (covered further in Underworld section). However, plans on how a Smuggling (PvE only, for the time being at least) system will be implemented have been posted in the In Concept forum (although at the time of Publish 19 going onto Test Center, the post detailing the Smuggler Experience concept was removed/deleted).

  • How do I slice?
Select the item and choose slice from the radial menu. For containers and terminals this will result in the item being sliced, for weapons and armour, see below.

How much xp do I get per slice?
None, there is no such thing as slicing XP; to progress up the slicing tree you must get Pistol XP, just as every other Smuggler tree.

How do I slice a mission terminal and what does it do for me?
If you slice a Mission terminal successfully, then open the terminal mission window, the first page of missions will have about 25-50% higher payout than normal. To slice the terminal, simply select it and choose the "Slice" option from the radial menu.

    Can you slice faction terminals?
Yes, you will get a bump on your payout like a normal mission term would. Also you get an increase to faction earned for the mission, but not the faction you earn by killing the targets, only mission completion reward.

Can you slice missions for others?
No. Smugglers can slice any term we can use, but only the Slicer can get the higher rewards. Of course if he is in a group at the completion of the mission the group will have a cut of this increased payout.

Does a Master Smuggler have bonuses to slicing above and beyond that of a Slicer 4?
Other than the extra slicing options detailed above, no.

Can you pick the stat that increases on my weapon/armor?
    Yes (see options below).

What does Slicing do to my weapon?

    Increase Attack Speed:
This slice increases the attack speed of a weapon.

    Order     Total Bonus     Customisation Rating
    1             2%                  +20%
    2             4%                  +20%
    3             7%                  +25%
    4             12%                +30%

    Enhance Damage
This slice increases the weapons damage range.

    Order     Total Bonus     Customisation Rating
    1              2%                   +20%
    2              4%                   +20%
    3              8%                   +20%

    Increase Critical Strike Chance
This slice will give the weapon a small base chance to hit vital areas for double damage; this bonus is applied in addition to any critical hit chance supplied to an attack.

    Order     Chance     Customisation Rating
    1              3%                   +20%
    2              5%                   +40%
    3              10%                 +40%

What tools are required to slice weapons?
    The first slice for each of the three weapon slicing options requires nothing but the Smuggler's skill, but after that specific slicing components are required in order to peform the slice (one component per slice). These are as follows;

    Attack Speed:

    • 2nd slice requires: Simple Toolkit
    • 3rd slice requires: Finely Crafted Toolset
    • 4th slice requires: Delicate Trigger Assembly
    Enhance Damage:
    • 2nd slice requires: Simple Toolkit
    • 3rd slice requires: Illegal Core Booster
    Critical Strike:
    • 2nd slice requires: Finely Crafted Toolset
    • 3rd slice requires: Delicate Trigger Assembly
How do I slice a weapon?
Select the weapon and choose the "Slice" option from the radial menu. A window will open presenting you with three options (or less, depending on how far through the Smuggling profession you are); each of these options and their effects are detailed above in the previous question.

    Once you have chosen from the three you will be presented with yet more options, of which you must choose the first in the tiered sequence;
e.g. you begin slicing a weapon that has not previously been sliced before; you want to increase the weapon's attack speed, so choose that option. You are then presented with the attack speed slicing options. You must pick the first unsliced option, in this case Rebuild Weapon Body; then click Ok and watch as your weapon's stats are updated. If you then want to improve the weapon's speed again, repeat the steps above, ensuring that you have a Simple Toolkit at your disposal for use in the slice. You can continue to make modifications to the weapon until its customization value reaches 100%.
What does Slicing do to my armour?

    Enhance Resilience:
Normally armour begins to suffer from reduced effectiveness at less than 50% max condition. This slice will improve the armour’s performance under extreme decay. The armour will not begin to suffer the reduced effectiveness until it reaches the level of decay shown below.

    Order     Condition     Customisation rating
    1             40%                  +25%
    2             30%                  +25%
    3             20%                  +25%

The first column is the order in which the slice must be made; the second is the changed percentage of condition at which the armour piece begins to suffer from the effects of decay; the third column being the amount added to the piece’s customisation rating.

    Improve Impact Deflection:
This slice reduces the amount of damage/decay a piece of armour takes from each hit by 50%. Higher Ranks in this slice increases the likelihood of damage reduction.

    Order     Chance     Customisation rating
    1             20%                  +25%
    2             40%                  +25%
    3             60%                  +25%

The first column is the order in which the slice must be made, the second is the chance in percentage terms of each hit’s effect on the armour’s condition being reduced by half, with the third column being the amount added to the piece’s customisation rating.

    Add Hardening
This slice gives the armour a chance to absorb 50% of incoming damage to the player. This bonus does not stack with other armour pieces. It only applies if the sliced armour piece is hit in combat (I.E. a head piece bonus of 1% does not result in an overall bonus of 2% as each piece offers 1% for the area of body it covers).

    Order     Chance     Customisation rating
    1             1%                  +15%
    2             2%                  +35%
    3             3%                  +50%

The first column is the order in which the slice must be made, the second is the chance in percentage terms of each hit’s damage to the character being reduced by half, with the third column being the amount added to the piece’s customisation rating.

    Armour Break Reduction
This slice reduces the effect of the Armour Break ability when this armour piece is hit in combat.

    Order     Reduction     Customisation rate
    1             25%                  +20%
    2             50%                  +20%
    3             75%                  +20%

The first column is the order in which the slice must be made, the second is the amount in percentage terms that the Armour Break effect is reduced, with the third column being the amount added to the piece’s customisation rating.

What tools are required to slice Armour?
    The first slice for each of the four options requires nothing but the Smuggler's skill, but after that, specific slicing components are required in order to peform the slice (one component per slice). These are as follows;

    Enhance Resilience:

    • 2nd slice requires: Simple Toolkit
    • 3rd slice requires: Shock Absorbant Padding
    • 4th slice requires:
    Improve Impact Deflection:
    • 2nd slice requires: Finely Crafted Toolset
    • 3rd slice requires: Powered Motivators
    Add Hardening:
    • 2nd slice requires: Trandoshan Intraframe
    • 3rd slice requires: Mandalorian Intraframe
    Armour Break Reduction:
    • 2nd slice requires: Shock Absorbant Padding
    • 3rd slice requires: Reactive Micro Plating
    How do I slice armour?
The process for slicing an armour piece is identical to that of slicing a weapon, with only the options available and effects differing.

Where can I get slicing components from?
Slicing components enter the game in the form of loot drops. These can be obtained throughout the galaxy, on the ground as well as in space. Known places that drop high end components include the Death Watch Bunker (DWB), Avatar Space Platform and the Corvette. Known specific drops include (thanks to Makris):

  • (Space) Tier 5 merc Ship in Dantooine: Level 4 armor upgrade pieces

  • (Ground) Nightsister Sentinels, Nightsister Elders (Dathomir, Stronghold) and (Tatooine) Krayt Dragons: Mandalorian Interframe, Delicate Trigger Assembly

  • (Space) Tier 5 and 4 Black Sun, CorSec mission spawns: Illegal core booster (3rd weapon damage slice)

  • (Ground) Mercenaries on Lok: Simple toolkits

How can I tell if a weapon/armor piece has been sliced?
The improved stats and customization rating is listen in the weapon's information.

Can I slice my [insert item] after using my Anti-Decay Kit (ADK) on it?
Yes, you can still slice an item after applying your ADK to it.

Can I slice my [insert item] after it has been bio-linked?
Yes, you can still slice a bio-linked item.

Do I have to hand over my weapon/armor to get it sliced?
Yes... so be careful of potential scamming and look for trusted smugglers.

Be sure to note the stats and even the serial number on your item if you're worried. Also, if you're unsure of the Smuggler (or customer if you're the one doing the slicing), making a log (typing /log will save the last 100 lines of conversation, or hitting printscreen will save an image ofwhat's on your screen in your SWG directory) of the conversation where you work out what's to be sliced and how much it will be is advised as you can use present this to CSRs.

    Where do I find containers?
These are found when looting humanoid enemies. Basically anything that wears clothing. (Swoopers, Pirates, Meatlumps, Wookie Brawlers, etc.) They are also sometimes found on a "Treasure Map" quest. Containers used to be the main method for gaining slicing XP at novice, but as slicing XP no longer exists, there's no need to do so unless someone can make it worth your while ;).

What is inside a locked container?
95% of the time, junk. Ranging from low end weapons, melons, single bits of resources and maybe an article of clothing or two. Perhaps another locked containers as well. 4% of the time... NOTHING. So please don't feel a Slicer has scammed you if he hands you back an empty container, it happens. 1% of the time some folks have found skill tapes, saber crystals, and other oddities in containers, so ya never know.

Check out rodav's thread, 'Locked Containers [what's inside]' for the recorded contents of 166 containers.

Can you slice a Personal Shield Generator?
    No.

How much should I charge for a slice?
    ?

I cannot put items into my unlocked container. It says I don't have permission to access it?
If you shift the container around it will let you use it again. Such as move it to your backpack then back to your root inventory. Or from your house floor, drop and pickup, or from the bank. This seems to reset it till you next want to put something in it.

How do I Slice a Faction Base Terminal?
While a Special Forces base is vulnerable, or at any time for a PvE base, you and a team may destroy it by following a sequence of actions, the first of which is to have a Bounty Hunter jam the uplink terminal, with the second action (the one we're interested in) being a Smuggler slicing the secturity terminal.

    1. You must be Declared (with a faction) and set as a Combatant (PvE enabled) to Slice a terminal in a PvE base and set as Special Forces (PvP enabled) to slice a PvP base.
    2. You must have Slicing 1 or greater.
    3. After the Bounty Hunter successfully jams the Uplink Terminal you should slice the security terminal.
    4. The Security Terminal is oval in shape and dark in color. It will have the label "Security Terminal" when you mouse over it.
    5. Choose slice from the radial menu to slice the terminal.
    That's it, you're done!

    Underworld Abilities

What good is Underworld's comp languages skill?
Underworld I grants the ability for Smugglers to understand all languages even if not previously trained. In the games current state most folks know all languages by the time they earn their first skill block. However the Smuggler does get the ability to understand Lekku, the Twi'lek "head tail" languages. Which no non-Twi'lek normally can.

How do I Evade Contraband Scans? (Smuggling)
Thunderheart- Novice Smugglers with “underworld” abilities will have a 15% chance to evade contraband searches plus an additional 15% for each skill box and Master Smugglers add another 20% for a total of 95%. Players in both the wilderness and cantinas may avoid shakedown searches if grouped with smugglers for the same bonuses. In order to receive the smuggler bonus from being grouped with the player the smuggler must be within range (35m).

    What is 'Contraband'?
Contraband is anything deemed illegal by either Rebel or Imperial forces. For Imperials this consists of: Rebel faction equipment, Spice, Sliced weapons and armor; for Rebels this consists of the same, with the exception of Imperial faction equipment instead of Rebel.

    Where is Contraband scanned for?
There are three methods in which you can be scanned; the most prolific is the standard scan team that patrol cities; they are in the form of both local law enforcement (e.g. CorSec) and the factional troops in control of the city (if any). “Crackdowns” occur in the wilderness, in the form of a probe droid scanning you and then bringing down an Imperial Shuttle which drops off a squad of Storm Troopers. “Shakedowns” look for covert rebels and occur in Planetary Cantinas (not player Cantinas).

    Can I Evade Faction scans?
Yes, you receive the same protection from Faction scans as you do for contraband scans (dependent on your character's ability).

    What are 'Faction scans'?
Ever since the GCW meta game was introduced faction players are now always in one of three states, Special Forces (PvP enabled), Combatant (PvE enabled), or On Leave (to all intents and purposes neutral). Players that are On Leave can be scanned by NPC forces of opposing factions and if discovered will have their status changed to that of Combatant and attacked.

Who can I buy faction with?
Rebel or Imperial only. You buy at the recruiter.

How do I Buy/Sell faction points?
At Underworld IV you get Connections which lets you Buy Faction: 20,000c = 250FP or 100,000c = 1250FP. There are however several limitations to this ability:

    • In order to purchase faction your GCW status must be Specal Forces (PvP enabled)
    • You cannot buy any faction if your enemy faction is over 200, "You are a known (insert enemy) sympathizer..."

    • You cannot buy faction if your current total in that faction is equal to your faction cap (dictated by what rank you are in the faction). Note: purchasing more faction than you can hold will result in filling your faction point count up to your limit and then losing any excess FP

    • You cannot buy faction from an opposing recruiter if you're aligned with the opposing faction

To use this skill go to the recruiter who's faction you want to buy into and select, "I would like to make a donation to your cause" dialog.

At Underworld III you get Sell Out which lets you sell your faction points, 25FP=210-300c on average, but sometimes they pay you nothing. Previously, to use this skill you would go to the opposite recruiter of the faction you would like to sell, and select, "I have some valuable information for you" dialog. Currently however, this option is no-longer available and it is unclear whether this is a bug or if the skill has been intentionally removed.

Why would I buy faction then?
The ability to buy faction allows you to maintain positive faction on both sides, if you do not get in too many scuffles. This gives the Smuggler a bit more freedom in being able to switch sides as he/she pleases and allows you to go to any theme park or story line quest.

Also with the ability to /delegatefaction in the game you can sell faction points as a commodity to other players. The cost is ruinous, and if you are not at least a Colonel in rank you will lose a significant amount of faction in the trade as well, but some folks are willing to wait and pay you to delegate them faction. This can be a slow process, depending on how much faction is required, how much you have to begin with and what your faction rank is.

For details on this Dreven has made a Great guide:
Smuggler's Guide to Selling Faction Points v3.1 by Dreven

Is anyplace better than another for buying faction?
In terms of FP purchase/finance, it's best to buy faction on a planet where your faction is in control. However, for the actual transfer it would be wise to choose a place out of the way in order to avoid chance encounters with opposing faction PvP enabled players (it's also an idea to have backup standing by incase the deal goes sour and it turns out to be a trap). Here's a little step by step guide writen by Jaguarrr for the ultra cautious:

    • Go combatant at any place convient for you,
    • Have your customer(s) ready waiting at the starship terminal,
    • Launch with your customer(s) into space,
    • Have some fun blowing stuff up while on the way to the Dantooine Space Station,
    • Assuming you have already done the quest, land at the abandoned Rebel Base (Vortex Pilots most likely have),
    • Walk (because walking is much cooler) into the base and go upstairs to the captain near Mon Mothma,
    • Go Special Forces and delegate, if your customer is not rebel he can't enter the building (I don't know what the range is but a line of sight seems not to be needed),
    • Any gank-squads that will be that desperate to get you flail outside until your combtant/on leave again,
    • Give your customer a ride after a successfull deal or leave your customer to rot if he tried to scam you,
If you're Imperial, substitute the destination/transfer point with the Emperor's retreat.

Why is faction lost during the transfer?
The /delegate command has ratios based on your current faction rank. Here's a table put together by DrevenStrobe which shows the different ranks, how much it costs to attain the rank, how many points you can hold at the rank, and what your /del ratio would be.

Colonel is the highest rank you can attain, and it carries the best ratio at 1.177:1.

    Rank                      |  Cost  | FP Cap  | /delegate ratio

    Minimum to join     |   200 |   1,000 |  10.0:1 (Costs 1000 to send 100)

What are crowd control and mezing?
Crowd Control is a form of combat that focuses on causing problems for an enemy, rather than destroying them outright; this may be in the form of restricting or stopping their movement, lowering their accuracey, rate of fire etc. as well as preventing them from attacking.

    What does Concussion Shot do?
Concussion Shot does less damage than a standard shot, its multiplier being around 0.25 (for the improved special). The shot has two effects on a target; on the one hand it roots the target to the spot, preventing movement, while at the same time dazing the target, which prevents it from attacking, healing etc.

It is important to not that while the effects last for 40 seconds, they will be cease to be in effect immediately should the target take any form of damage in combat.

    What does Last Ditch do?
Last Ditch is a high risk special that allows you to do what its name implies, a last ditch attempt at taking out your opponent. The damage it deals is inversely proportional to your character's health, so if you have been heavily damage and are on the verge of being incappacitated, the damage the shot will do will be extremely high (depending on the weapon being used, around 2000-4000, although higher has been acheived), while a character with a full ammount of health will do very little damage.

The downside that causes the risk involved in using Last Ditch is that your entire HAM bar is reduced to 1%, leaving you open to instant incappatication should you either miss, or your damage not be sufficient to incappacitate your opponent. The ability also has a longer than average cool down period, preventing you from using it repeatedly while in combat

    What does Overwhelming Shot do?
This special reduces a target's ability to resist state effects (e.g. blindness, dizzyness, fear etc.)

    What does Feign Death do?
First and foremost, Feign Death (FD) is a PvE skill, not intended for PvP.

Once you give the feign death command, should your attempt be successful, you will fall down and be unnattackable. You will stay down until you choose to get up by giving a stand command. MOBs will not attack you while you are in this incap state (although AOE shots from NPCs can and will incap you; if that happens 3 times on the trot, you're dead) and will eventually wander back to their lair. They will however re-aggro you when you stand, so be ready.

    What does Low Blow do?
Low blow does less damage than a standard shot, its multiplier being around 0.25, but is supposed to slow down an enemy's attack speed.

    What does Reckless Shot do?
Reckless shot causes a damage multiplier of just under 1.6 (for the advanced special) at the expense of a Smuggler's defence while using it.

    What does Restraining Shot do?
Restraining does less damage than a standard shot, its multiplier being around 0.5; the special does however reduce a target's movement speed.

    What does Panic Shot do?
Panic Shot causes only one point of damage but causes the target to be dazed, as in Concussion shot; indeed, Panic shot is designed to be a backup for Concussion shot should your target be inadvertantly damaged before concussion shot's timer runs out.

  • Spices

    What are spices?
Spices are "buffs" that give your character enhanced stats for a limited time. When the spices wear off though, you suffer from a 'downer' or 'withdrawal' They are instant in their buff, and can be used as "ghetto stims" though only one can be used at a time.

What is this spice 'Withdrawal' or 'downer'?
Downers are the negative effects of spice and last between 20 and 30 seconds. The negative effects of the spice mirror the positive effects and also prevent the character from using more spice and/or consuming food.

Do spices stack with a chef's food?
Yes, the increase in stat from both food and spice will "stack" meaning that they will both add to the stat.

How many spices can be active at once?
    One. Including withdrawal time.

Why can't I experiment on Spice?
Because the Devs removed the ability until they can build a system for it to do something (developments so far).

What spice does what? Can you tell me more?

    How to use a factory
For spice: (using muon gold for this example)

    1. Obtain enough rad, water, and metal to make 10 or so crates of Muon Gold, bout 3750 of each.

    2. Obtain a Food Factory.

    3. Obtain a Gen/Weapon/Droid, crafting tool.

    4. Stand near a Gen.Wep.Droid public crafting station, or get a droid with a gen.crafting module.

    5. Start crafting tool, select the Food tab.

    6. Make a Muon Gold, BUT when you get to the window that says "make a prototype or Make a schematic" select schematic, name it if you want to change it, leave it at 1000.

    7. Place a Food Factory, Do NOT put any power in it yet.

    8. The menu on the lower right of the radial has the option insert schematic, click it, a new window opens with a list of all the schems you have made, select the one you want the factory to make.

    9. Back to the radial, same sub menu, select open ingredient hopper.

    10. Put your rad, water, and food in. Close the window.

    11. NOTE: You will need to always use the same ingredients you made the schematic with. If you run out of something, destroy the schem and make a new one.

    12. Open radial on the factory and go to the top right menu, use this to insert your maintenance and power. You waited till now to put in your power because the factory would of taken your Rad from your Muon recipe.

    13. Now that everything is in go to the Lower left sub menu, select start manufacture.

    14. The factory will run till it:

      • Runs out of maintenance: approx 1400c a day (always consumed running or not.)

      • Runs out of power, approx. 500 a day if good stuff. (only consumed while running)

      • Runs out of material

      • Runs the schematic out (1000 units max)

    15. Examine the factory, it will tell you what it is making and a number for time, as well as the number made so far.

      • The time is the number of seconds per item. I forget how fast Muon is, but I think it takes about an hour a crate. (time_displayed*25/60=minutes per crate) This time is based on the complexity rating of the item.

    16. Each crate will be 25, this is not changeable. BUT you can split the crates afterward if you want smaller. Sometimes the factory will twitch and make a partial crate.

Same basic process for slicing tools, except you need to use a Equipment Factory.

Once I reach novice smuggler, can I get rid of Unarmed?
No. Unless you no longer want to be a smuggler.

Is it true that Bothans make better smugglers?
It depends on what you think makes a better Smuggler.

Bothans get an additional 10% discount off faction perks. Please be aware that the discount takes effect after the actual purchase. So you must still meet the cost to purchase a faction perk, but when you actually purchase it, you will notice that you don't spend the full amount.

This is the only bonus that Bothans get, over a smuggler of another race.
