  • Musician - Martyn's Musician Musings
By: Martyn, Posted at: Sat, Jun 14th 12:23 PM 2003

    v 2.0

First off, Welcome! It's good to see you all.

I know you are all dying to know how to be a better Musician... so lets get to the point, shall we?

    A primer on Instruments
Now, we all should know from common sense that a musician is nothing without his/her instrument. All beginning entertainers should get a slitherhorn when they become a novice. There are also other instruments you can acquire. Some instruments sound the same as others, but may give more experience once you become a musician.

    1. Slitherhorn. Can be crafted and played by a Novice Entertainer

    2. Fizzz: Sounds like a brass section in some songs, and a Sax in others. can be played at Musicianship II Can be crafted at Musicianship III

    3. Omnibox: Drum set(more experience gained than with Bandfill). Musical Knowledge IV to use. Can be crafted by a musician with musical techniques IV

    4. Nalargon: Organ/Steel drums. master Musician to use. Can be crafted by a musician with Musical Techniques IV

    5. Mandoviol: Cross between a Mandolin, and a violin. Master Entertainer to use. Can be crafted By a musician with Musical Techniques II

Those are the basic instrument types. Note that until you reach higher levels of Musical knowledge skills, -after- you become a musician, You will not be able to play some songs on these instruments.

The following instruments sound the same as the 5 basic instruments, but as I said earlier in the class, give more experience at the higher levels of the musician branch:

1.Traz: Identical to a Slitherhorn in sound(More Experience than Fanfarr and Slitherhorn). Can Be played at Novice Musician Can be crafted by a musician with musical techniques II

2.Kloo: Identical to a Fizzz(more experience though Than Fizz). Can be played at Musicianship IV Can be crafted by a novice musician

3.Chidinkalu Horn: Identical to a Fizzz(more experience though Than both). can be played at Musical Knowledge III Can be crafted by a musician with advanced musical techniques

4.Fanfar: Identical to a Slitherhorn in sound(more experience though Than Slitherhorn). can be played at Musicianship III Can be crafted by a Novice musician

5.Bandfill: Identical to an omnibox in sound. Can be palyed at Musical Knowledge II Can be crafted by a musician with musical techniques III

    To craft an instrument:
1.Have an artisan make you a "Weapon, Droid, and general crafting tool"

2.Open your datapad and click on the Schematics tab.

3.Open the schematic for the desired instrument, and gather the correct resources.

4.Click and open the radial dial on the crafting tool. choose Start crafting.

5.Choose the instrument you wish to craft.

6.Drag the appropriate resources into their correct slots.

7.Follow the onscreen prompts. (i.e, next button, etc.) and, Voila!

    A Primer on Songs
Now that we have the instrument primer out of the way, we get to move on to the reason we have those instruments.. songs.
Beginning musicians know how to play a song named Starwars1. Yes yes, I hear you groaning ... but with an omnibox, and a few other instruments, the song actually sounds nice. The following is a list of the songs, and when you can expect to be playing them.

Note that you will not be able to play all songs on all instruments. Being able to play different songs on different instruments comes with experience.(Which I was never able to figure out when you get the different abilities, because I didn't have all instruments at all skill levels)

    1. Starwars1 Novice Entertainer

    2. Rock: Musicianship I

    3. Starwars2 (aka Mos Eisley Cantina song): Musicianship II

    4. Folk: Musicianship III

    5. Starwars3 (has elements of "The Imperial March" done funky style):Musicianship IV

    6. Ballad: Musical Knowledge I

    7. Waltz: Musical Knowledge III

    8. Ceremonial: Master Entertainer

    9. Jazz: Musical Knowledge IV

    10. Virtuoso: Master Musician

    A primer on Flourishes.
Since we have our instruments, and we have a song or two to play, we are all set, right? Wrong. Sure, you can sit there and play the main riff over and over, but that will not advance your musical talent, not to mention sound extremely boring. This is where Flourishes come in.

There are two different types of flourish. Solo Flourish (/flourish 1-8) and Bandflourish (/bandflourish 1-8). Solo Flourishes affect you alone. It allows you to perform a mini chorus solo by yourself, to gain experience, or to just separate yourself out of the crowd. (Note to those only wanting experience: To get the maximum amount of experience, you only need to perform 2 flourishes per 10 seconds.)

Band Flourishes affect the entire Band. It allows you to synch the band into a chorus, and look pretty slick. (Note to those only wanting experience: same rule in effect here. Only two bandflourishes needed per 10 seconds. but please ... do not mash the bandflourish key. See etiquette primer.)

Used wisely, Flourishes can make your band sound top-notch. You can even make your own unique sounding songs, if you practice enough. One person should be the elected band leader, and should be the only one doing the bandflourishes. Five people doing bandflourishes tends to ruin the atmosphere of a song, and leads to ear bleeding (Not really, but close). Also, do not do constant band flourishes. Allow people to do their own solo flourishes. It leads to a much more rich atmosphere in a cantina or theater, and allows the main riff to play through. (Listen to any popular style of music, and you will see that the main riff is the heart of the songs, and flourishes are for chorus and other cues).

    A primer on Abilities.
I will only lightly brush this topic, as there is not much to be said here.
The muscician class aquires the ability to put on a few different light shows at Musical techniques I. These do not increase experience, or anything useful. just makes a pretty light show. They can add a bit of flair and class to your performance.

    /coloredlights
    /dazzle
    /spotlight

At musical techniques II you gain:
    /firejet

And at musical techniques III, you gain:
    /ventriloquism

This one is neat, as it requires a target. When you use it, it causes a glow on the target, with a few streamers.

    A primer on Singing
If you want to add another level to your performance, we have at our command, a way to sing.

/sing (text) formats a text bubble to look like a musical bar, and has our text read, for example:

Martyn Lightcrest sings, "Jump to hyperspace, playin sabbac, sipping on Jawa Juice.. laid back, with my mind on my credits and my credits on my mind"
Not much else to be said about this command.

    /rap
Martyn Lightcrest raps, "I love it when you call me Big Pa-pa. Throw ya hands in da air, if yous a true playa"

    /recite
Martyn Lightcrest recites, "Friends, Gungans, Countrymen. Lend me your ears! I come to bury Holocron, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with thier bones. So let it be with Caesar. The noble Q-3P0 Hath told you Holocron was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Holocron answered it."

A primer on Audience Participation and group bonus
One person watching seems to give a +1 bonus. more watching gives up to a +4 bonus, I believe(I amy be wrong)
    /clap seems give no bonus
/applaud by one person gives a bonus of 1 exp
/cheer, not sure, but when my helper spammed me with cheer and applaud, I got a +3 bonus for a few rounds.
    /boo does nothing.. *chuckles*

Grouping bonus seems to be +1 for every 2 performing members of the group, up to a maximum of +10 (I amy be wrong) only seems to work with musicians or dancers that are actually performing. If the are not playing, or dancing. No bonus

A primer on Etiquette (i.e. the most important part of being a musician.)
So, you now know the basics on being a great musician. Now, you will learn the most important lesson. Being courteous, and following the rules of etiquette.

    1. Do not hassle customers for tips, and do not ask for tips. Doing so is such bad form. Waiters at restaurants do not hassle customers for tips, neither should musicians. Do your best, make it an entertaining atmosphere, and the tips will come to you. You are not a beggar, you are an artist. Most of all, if you do get tipped, thank them properly. Tips are a gift, not necessary.

    2. Socialize with your customer. Let them know you are there, and that you appreciate their company. Smile, flirt, and above all, be courteous.(In other words, don't set up a macro and go AFK)

    3. Follow the bandleaders direction. Nothing ruins the atmosphere more than 5 bandmembers all doing their own thing. It sounds awful, and will drive customers off.

    3. Socialize and get to know your bandmembers. This is self explanatory.

    4. Be a mentor. Allow the less experienced to join your band. Let them learn from you and your band mates. Mentor him/her. It will not kill you to drop back to an older song and let the newer generation jam with you. You can make a new friend, train him, and take part in the formative moments of a new artist.

5.Have fun. Nothing ruins the moment like an musician that is not having fun. IF you are getting bored, leave the band for a while, and do something fun.
Don't stand around and complain. It only ruins everyone else's fun.

    6. Be open to new suggestions, and willing to learn. No one knows it all. 'Nuff said.

    7. Do not disrupt the flow of a band just because you want experience. If you want musicianship experience, find a quiet spot and play. If you want healing experience, join the band, follow their lead, and have fun!

    8. DO NOT HARRASS THE DANCERS!! Flirt with them, make friends, add them to your band, but don't be rude to them. Even though this one is eight on the list, it is very important.

    Conclusion
Now you should all have a good knowledge of what it takes to be a grand Musician.
This is not, by any means, a be all, end all guide. This is just to offer some tips and helpful dialogue to get you started. I will be updating as my knowledge grows, and by all means, if you see something I am missing, be sure to boot me in the behind and let me know. If something is in error as well, let me know. This guide is correct to the best of my knowledge to date.

    Humbly yours,

I made a overly complicated macro which I use for my Musician. While it may not give the MOST xp possible, I find it to be the most reliable of any macro I've found. You will need Medic First Aid 4. It helps to turn your Auto AFK off under Options > AFK. For this Macro, you'll need to make two extra macros.

      Macro #1: Flourish1-4
      /flourish 1
      /flourish 2
      /flourish 3
      /flourish 4

      Macro #2: Flourish5-8
      /flourish 5
      /flourish 6
      /flourish 7
      /flourish 8

      Final Macro: MusicMacro
      /join
      /macro Flourish1-4
      /pause 37
      /macro Flourish5-8
      /pause 37
      /macro Flourish1-4
      /pause 37
      /macro Flourish5-8
      /pause 37
/macro Flourish1-4   (Continue to do this
/pause 37 until you Action bar is
/macro Flourish5-8 down in the low hundreds)
      /pause 37
      /stopMusic
      /pause 20
      /quickheal
      /quickheal
      /pause 20
      /tell YourNameHere Asdf
      /startMusic SongName
      /macro MusicMacro

      The benefits to this macro:
Working with a Musician for awhile, I've encountered a lot of errors that may apply, such as prolonged delay times and lag enduced delay. That is why it may appear that I have large amounts of unneeded pause time. This macro is made to be completely self-independent. QuickHeal causes you mind wounds, but uses no Stim Packs. While you play, the wounds are healed, and your mind will go back to full, therefore healing you with ZERO negative effects or cost. The Flourish macros are made to help stack the XP up, while giving you perfect timing to get all XP for each Flourish (I believe the next set of Flourish's start as soon as you get the four amount of XP). I have ran this macro for a week and a half strait with no problems, as I went on vacation.

I hope this may be of some help to at least someone out there, looking for a macro they can run and not worry about.

okay i have a great way to gain xp. i mastered in a week doing this.
First off get buffed for quickness

Also remember always use your best intrument to play, no matter what your favorite is. it can be the difference between 100 music exp every 5 seconds or 30 exp.

      then setup this macro

      /join
      /startmusic <your highest song>
      /flourish 1
      /pause 4
      /flourish 2
      /pause 4
      /flourish 3
      /pause 4
      /flourish 4
      /pause 4
      /flourish 5
      /pause 4
      /flourish 6
      /pause 4
      /flourish 7
      /pause 4
      /flourish 8
      /pause 4
      /ui action toolbarSlot00

put that in the F1 hot key slot.

      to stop it type /dump

i recommend joining a group in theed or coronet and letting the game run over night for a while.

you will be master in no time!

      For Instrument crafting:

There are only 3 resources you really have to have on hand to craft every instrument, steel, aluminum, and soft wood, if you have those 3 you can craft every instrument in the game assuming you have the skill.

I believe the band size bonus is a percentage added per person in the group, with the nalargon in a full group once I got over 130 music exp a round, while solo the nalargon gives 45 music exp a round (for twi).  I know the instrument the others are playing does not effect ur exp, only the number of people playing (not just sitting around), the people listening, and the instrument used, along with of course the flourishes.

The last post here was way off in the exp but I don't remember the exp for the skills off the top of my head, you can check them in the game anyway if you don't have the skills, master ent and master music only require the 4 trees and app exp for example.

Once you hit musician if you have someone you can buy instruments from the fastest way to get music exp is to get know4 before you even bother getting tech1, but in my case that didn't even matter because I still needed a lot of healing exp for master after getting both know4 and tech4.

If you want to help the medics that come in the cantina for exp and you have the tech tree, spam colorlights and spotlight, that will result in the greatest action burn of any combination of special effects, I'm hoping the devs will realize this and lower the cost of the specials eventually.

And to make it easier to see which instrument/song you want to play for exp here's the instruments and songs listed in order of exp given from least to most, listing the ones that are the same on the same line:

      sw1, slitherhorn (novice ent)
      rock, fizz (music 1)
      sw2 (music 2)
      folk, fanfar (music 3)
      sw3, kloo horn (music 4)
ceremonial, mandovial (master ent), traz (novice music)
      ballad (know1)
      bandfill (know2)
      waltz, chidinkalu horn (know3)
      jazz, ommni box (know4)
      virtuoso, nalargon (master music)

So as you can tell as long as you get each instrument as soon as you can play it you will get as much exp as you can get just by playing sw1 with 2 exceptions: sw2 at music2 gives more than the fizz, and ballad at know1 gives more than the traz/mandovial. But I still like playing something besides sw1 to save my eardrums :)

I personally never played the traz more than a few minutes since I got master ent before novice music and the traz has the awful slitherhorn sound while the mandovial sounds pretty nice, but the time I did play it to test it did indeed give the same exp as the mandovial for me.

If you have any other questions and ur on Tempest send a tell to me Mori Oxitwi, I spend a lot of my time in the coronet cantina or working on my doctor skills.

      More etiquette tips:

Don't use bandflourish unless everyone agrees. It drains everyone's action points and they don't get exp for it, so you are just killing the band. You can also turn it off as a musician (not sure it works) by using /bandflourish off.

If it's not a star wars theme song and just another rythem, then I'm fine with it :)

      /startband <song>
      /stopband

Great for re-synchronizing the band if you have to change songs; usually when a less experience player is added to the band.

Be sure to wait a few seconds after /stopband to be sure everyone has stopped playing.  Once everyone's stopped, use /startband <song> to move on to the next song.

I've also used /changebandmusic <song> to switch tunes as we're playing, but some people have said the command makes everyone's instrument sound the same to them. Use at your discretion.

You forgot to include the updates I have made. Ill include them here.

      Small correction
In the following paragraphs, replace "Knowledge" with "Techniques"
I must have been on crack that day.

***"The musician class aquires the ability to put on a few different light shows at Musical techniques 1. These do not increase experience, or anything useful. just makes a pretty light show. They can add a bit of flair and class to your performance.

      /coloredlights
      /dazzle
      /spotlight
At  musical Techniques 2 you gain
      /firejet
and at musical Techniques 3, you gain
      /ventriloquism
This one is neat, as it requires a target. When you use it, it causes a glow on the target, with a few streamers"***

      ********************************************

Small edit. I, for some reason as pointed out so astutely by Holocron, left out /rap and /recite from the singing portion of my guide.
They format a text bubble similar to what /sing does. Only different. ;P

The noble Q-3PO Hath told you Holocron was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Holocron answered it."
      *****************************************
      Audience participation:
1 person watching seems to give a +1 bonus up to a +5 bonus for more people
      /clap gives sporadic bonus
/applaud by one person gives a bonus of 1 exp
/cheer, not sure, but when my helper spammed me with cheer and applaud, I got a +3 bonus for a few rounds.
      /boo does nothing.. *chuckles*
( I could not gather any more audience members. Test is very sparse more people watching could give higher bonus/more people applaud may also)

Group size Bonus: Godsend. You get an extra point for every two people up to 6, and after that, each person adds a point, up to about +10 I believe

I thought that 45+15+5+1= 66... that would mean 66k of both Musician, Dance, and Entertainment healing to get to master not to mention the ID exp.
