v 2.0
First off, Welcome! It's good to see you all.
I know you are all dying to know how to be a better Musician... so lets get to the point, shall we?
A primer on Instruments
Now, we all should know from common sense that a musician is nothing without his/her instrument. All beginning entertainers should get a slitherhorn when they become a novice. There are also other instruments you can acquire. Some instruments sound the same as others, but may give more experience once you become a musician.
1. Slitherhorn. Can be crafted and played by a Novice Entertainer
2. Fizzz: Sounds like a brass section in some songs, and a Sax in others. can be played at Musicianship II Can be crafted at Musicianship III
3. Omnibox: Drum set(more experience gained than with Bandfill). Musical Knowledge IV to use. Can be crafted by a musician with musical techniques IV
4. Nalargon: Organ/Steel drums. master Musician to use. Can be crafted by a musician with Musical Techniques IV
5. Mandoviol: Cross between a Mandolin, and a violin. Master Entertainer to use. Can be crafted By a musician with Musical Techniques II
Those are the basic instrument types. Note that until you reach higher levels of Musical knowledge skills, -after- you become a musician, You will not be able to play some songs on these instruments.
The following instruments sound the same as the 5 basic instruments, but as I said earlier in the class, give more experience at the higher levels of the musician branch:
1.Traz: Identical to a Slitherhorn in sound(More Experience than Fanfarr and Slitherhorn). Can Be played at Novice Musician Can be crafted by a musician with musical techniques II
2.Kloo: Identical to a Fizzz(more experience though Than Fizz). Can be played at Musicianship IV Can be crafted by a novice musician
3.Chidinkalu Horn: Identical to a Fizzz(more experience though Than both). can be played at Musical Knowledge III Can be crafted by a musician with advanced musical techniques
4.Fanfar: Identical to a Slitherhorn in sound(more experience though Than Slitherhorn). can be played at Musicianship III Can be crafted by a Novice musician
5.Bandfill: Identical to an omnibox in sound. Can be palyed at Musical Knowledge II Can be crafted by a musician with musical techniques III
To craft an instrument:
1.Have an artisan make you a "Weapon, Droid, and general crafting tool"
2.Open your datapad and click on the Schematics tab.
3.Open the schematic for the desired instrument, and gather the correct resources.
4.Click and open the radial dial on the crafting tool. choose Start crafting.
5.Choose the instrument you wish to craft.
6.Drag the appropriate resources into their correct slots.
7.Follow the onscreen prompts. (i.e, next button, etc.) and, Voila!
A Primer on Songs
Now that we have the instrument primer out of the way, we get to move on to the reason we have those instruments.. songs.
Beginning musicians know how to play a song named Starwars1. Yes yes, I hear you groaning ... but with an omnibox, and a few other instruments, the song actually sounds nice. The following is a list of the songs, and when you can expect to be playing them.
Note that you will not be able to play all songs on all instruments. Being able to play different songs on different instruments comes with experience.(Which I was never able to figure out when you get the different abilities, because I didn't have all instruments at all skill levels)
1. Starwars1 Novice Entertainer
2. Rock: Musicianship I
3. Starwars2 (aka Mos Eisley Cantina song): Musicianship II
4. Folk: Musicianship III
5. Starwars3 (has elements of "The Imperial March" done funky style):Musicianship IV
6. Ballad: Musical Knowledge I
7. Waltz: Musical Knowledge III
8. Ceremonial: Master Entertainer
9. Jazz: Musical Knowledge IV
10. Virtuoso: Master Musician
A primer on Flourishes.
Since we have our instruments, and we have a song or two to play, we are all set, right? Wrong. Sure, you can sit there and play the main riff over and over, but that will not advance your musical talent, not to mention sound extremely boring. This is where Flourishes come in.
There are two different types of flourish. Solo Flourish (/flourish 1-8) and Bandflourish (/bandflourish 1-8). Solo Flourishes affect you alone. It allows you to perform a mini chorus solo by yourself, to gain experience, or to just separate yourself out of the crowd. (Note to those only wanting experience: To get the maximum amount of experience, you only need to perform 2 flourishes per 10 seconds.)
Band Flourishes affect the entire Band. It allows you to synch the band into a chorus, and look pretty slick. (Note to those only wanting experience: same rule in effect here. Only two bandflourishes needed per 10 seconds. but please ... do not mash the bandflourish key. See etiquette primer.)
Used wisely, Flourishes can make your band sound top-notch. You can even make your own unique sounding songs, if you practice enough. One person should be the elected band leader, and should be the only one doing the bandflourishes. Five people doing bandflourishes tends to ruin the atmosphere of a song, and leads to ear bleeding (Not really, but close). Also, do not do constant band flourishes. Allow people to do their own solo flourishes. It leads to a much more rich atmosphere in a cantina or theater, and allows the main riff to play through. (Listen to any popular style of music, and you will see that the main riff is the heart of the songs, and flourishes are for chorus and other cues).
A primer on Abilities.
I will only lightly brush this topic, as there is not much to be said here.
The muscician class aquires the ability to put on a few different light shows at Musical techniques I. These do not increase experience, or anything useful. just makes a pretty light show. They can add a bit of flair and class to your performance.
/coloredlights
/dazzle
/spotlight
At musical techniques II you gain:
/firejet
And at musical techniques III, you gain:
/ventriloquism
This one is neat, as it requires a target. When you use it, it causes a glow on the target, with a few streamers.
A primer on Singing
If you want to add another level to your performance, we have at our command, a way to sing.
/sing (text) formats a text bubble to look like a musical bar, and has our text read, for example:
Martyn Lightcrest sings, "Jump to hyperspace, playin sabbac, sipping on Jawa Juice.. laid back, with my mind on my credits and my credits on my mind"
Not much else to be said about this command.
/rap
Martyn Lightcrest raps, "I love it when you call me Big Pa-pa. Throw ya hands in da air, if yous a true playa"
/recite
Martyn Lightcrest recites, "Friends, Gungans, Countrymen. Lend me your ears! I come to bury Holocron, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with thier bones. So let it be with Caesar. The noble Q-3P0 Hath told you Holocron was ambitious: If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Holocron answered it."
A primer on Audience Participation and group bonus
One person watching seems to give a +1 bonus. more watching gives up to a +4 bonus, I believe(I amy be wrong)
/clap seems give no bonus
/applaud by one person gives a bonus of 1 exp
/cheer, not sure, but when my helper spammed me with cheer and applaud, I got a +3 bonus for a few rounds.
/boo does nothing.. *chuckles*
Grouping bonus seems to be +1 for every 2 performing members of the group, up to a maximum of +10 (I amy be wrong) only seems to work with musicians or dancers that are actually performing. If the are not playing, or dancing. No bonus
A primer on Etiquette (i.e. the most important part of being a musician.)
So, you now know the basics on being a great musician. Now, you will learn the most important lesson. Being courteous, and following the rules of etiquette.
1. Do not hassle customers for tips, and do not ask for tips. Doing so is such bad form. Waiters at restaurants do not hassle customers for tips, neither should musicians. Do your best, make it an entertaining atmosphere, and the tips will come to you. You are not a beggar, you are an artist. Most of all, if you do get tipped, thank them properly. Tips are a gift, not necessary.
2. Socialize with your customer. Let them know you are there, and that you appreciate their company. Smile, flirt, and above all, be courteous.(In other words, don't set up a macro and go AFK)
3. Follow the bandleaders direction. Nothing ruins the atmosphere more than 5 bandmembers all doing their own thing. It sounds awful, and will drive customers off.
3. Socialize and get to know your bandmembers. This is self explanatory.
4. Be a mentor. Allow the less experienced to join your band. Let them learn from you and your band mates. Mentor him/her. It will not kill you to drop back to an older song and let the newer generation jam with you. You can make a new friend, train him, and take part in the formative moments of a new artist.
5.Have fun. Nothing ruins the moment like an musician that is not having fun. IF you are getting bored, leave the band for a while, and do something fun.
Don't stand around and complain. It only ruins everyone else's fun.
6. Be open to new suggestions, and willing to learn. No one knows it all. 'Nuff said.
7. Do not disrupt the flow of a band just because you want experience. If you want musicianship experience, find a quiet spot and play. If you want healing experience, join the band, follow their lead, and have fun!
8. DO NOT HARRASS THE DANCERS!! Flirt with them, make friends, add them to your band, but don't be rude to them. Even though this one is eight on the list, it is very important.
Conclusion
Now you should all have a good knowledge of what it takes to be a grand Musician.
This is not, by any means, a be all, end all guide. This is just to offer some tips and helpful dialogue to get you started. I will be updating as my knowledge grows, and by all means, if you see something I am missing, be sure to boot me in the behind and let me know. If something is in error as well, let me know. This guide is correct to the best of my knowledge to date.
Humbly yours,
Martyn Starwhisper (Formerly Martyn Lightcrest)
