    Fencing in SWG

    A beginners guide by FightClub
    AKA Chrowl on Bria

    Last updated : 6 Nov 03

Ok, so my first holocron says get Master Fencer... not too bad I guess, my friend got Master Dancer and he's still complaining!

To get Master Fencer costs 92 skill points (63 in the tree and 29 in prerequisites).
The only prerequisite is the One Hand Weapons column in the Brawler tree.

    Starting Out:

Before you can begin, you need to get Novice Brawler training - I did all my training in Coronet and there's a trainer right next to the starport, it's handy for the mission terminals and bank too. Novice Brawler will give you dagger certification, a one-hand (1h) lunge, intimidate, warcry, taunt and berserk.
To start climbing the one-handed column you'll need to get a knife, just a regular survival knife will do because you can get a really decent weapon very soon so you only need to grind out the first 1000 points of 1h experience before you can upgrade. Fight the newbie mobs outside any starter city and you should get that first box in about 30 minutes max.
Ok, now it's time to get trained - I ended up paying the npc brawler trainers for almost all of my levels in this tree due to the extremely small numbers of fencers around.

    One-Handed I: Sword Technique
One-hand Hit 1 (/melee1hhit1) - this lets you hit much harder, but slower
certifications: curved sword, sword, gaderiffi baton
    bonuses: +10 accuracy, +5 speed

    Finding Weapons:

Now comes the fun part, it may be different on your server but on Bria at time of writing there seem to be very few weaponsmiths who make decent 1h weapons. What I found after visiting over 10 different vendors is many weaponsmiths have dabbled in edged weapons, before moving on to the much more lucrative rocket launchers and flamethrowers. Shop around is my best advice - you are now certified to use a Gaderiffi Baton (mine is 125/253, spd 2.8 sliced) which seems to be way better than every vibro-knife, curved sword or regular sword that I have been able to find. These things really rock and you'll be hitting for 1k plus damage in no time. The special move you get at this level is one-hand hit 1, which sounds really lame, but does add a surprising large percentage onto your damage output. If you're really into sharp shiny blades you might consider a vibro-knife as an alternative - so it's worth noting that they have light armour piercing which increases the damage done to most creatures... I don't think it's enough to make a 37/136 2.5 knife as good as my baton though.

    HAM Balancing:

A slightly off-topic note about Health/Action/Mind (HAM) costs here...

(It tells you this in the manual but I'll repeat it here because I've often seen people complaining about HAM costs in game).

1h weapons are pretty light on the HAM, but if you've added power-ups onto your weapon you only get 100 uses each so you'll want to spam your best special move pretty much all the time. This adds up fast and if you don't want to kill yourself, you'll need to increase the secondary stat associated with the largest HAM cost.
On my Gaderiffi the costs are 43/38/20 so I've set my 'Strength' bar to maximum and jacked up my quickness too - I had to lower all the other pools to get enough points to do this. If you look at the list of your stats in the 'stat migration' page, the first one of each group of 3 is the primary stat aka HAM (the one with a coloured bar on the game screen). The second one of each group controls how much is taken from the primary stat each time you use a special... so this one should be increased if you find you are killing yourself with special moves faster than the monster is eating you. The third one of each group is the regeneration rate, and although I'd set this high for Mind, I tend to use stim-b's to heal my primary Health and Action bars so constitution and stamina can be sacrificed a little in order to put points elsewhere.

    Melee Power Ups:

It's definitely worth buying crates of melee weapon power-ups if you can find them reasonably cheap (I pay about 2000 credits per crate of 10) - which type is down to you but if your weapon is very slow, speed might be good, otherwise I'd recommend the min or max damage type which reduce the health cost of your specials. Whenever I apply a power-up I always split one more out of the factory crate and unpack it (that's just two double clicks) so that I can easily add it on when they fade mid-way through a close fight!

    Further Advancement:

Now you should have a decent weapon, a special move, some power-ups and (I strongly advise) some medical stim's... so it's time to go hunting. With this set up you should kill most blue con.s in one special move, which is easy but unrewarding - and watch out because I've noticed that you quite often won't get any experience for the one-hit kills. White con.s should prove no problem unless you draw multiple attackers, and if you have a pet which will draw aggro you may find that you can also kill yellow con creatures.
Avoid pirate and faction missions is my best advice - they all run slightly faster than you can and due to server lag issues it's not possible to hit a running man even when you appear to be standing inside of him (you'll just get 'target out of range' messages).

The next 3 boxes in the prerequisite tree are:

    One-handed II: Lethal Strikes
One-hand Body Hit 1 (/melee1hbodyhit1) - lets you target the Health pool but doesn't hit as hard as One-hand Hit 1
    certifications: vibroblade
    bonuses: +10 accuracy, +5 speed
    costs: 5000

    One-handed III: Blunt Edge Strikes
One-hand Dizzy 1 (/melee1hdizzyhit1) - hits pretty hard and will sometimes make the target get dizzy (which makes them fight worse and sometimes fall down)
    certifications: rykk blade
    bonuses: +10 1h melee toughness, +10 accuracy, +5 speed
    costs: 15000

    One-handed IV: Dance of Blades
One-hand Spin Attack 1 (/melee1hspinattack1) - attacks all nearby creatures, not just the one you're targetting
    certifications: rantok sword
    bonuses: +10 1h melee toughness, +10 accuracy, +5 speed
    costs: 70000

To get this far you need 91000 points of 1h experience, so it's going to take a while. At these levels our damage is high, but we are extremely vulnerable so we have only two choices: either fight LOTS of weak creatures that don't give very much experience (gubbur = 70, correllian butterfly = 100) or group up with someone who will draw the aggro while you hit the big monsters from behind (mottled wrix = 1000, grand wrix = 1700). I have master creature handler and find that I can handle grand wrix lairs (level 27 missions) provided I let my pets draw aggro for a few seconds before I go to help them (grand wrixes make great pets!).

    Tactics:

If you want to make experience quickly, you have to take chances with higher level missions. This will often mean a quick trip back to the cloning centre until you get the hang of advanced lair splitting. Ideally you should never be fighting more than one creature at a time, and there are several guides on this site which will tell you how to achieve this.
Put all the different special move macros into one group on your macro bar - this makes it a lot easier to reach them fast with the mouse and of course you can use the number key short-cuts to hit them also.
Always use intimidate at the start of a fight, it greatly reduces the strength of the creature's attacks which means you'll live longer if it turns on you. Unfortunately it also annoys the creatures so they are more likely to turn on you too, but it's a risk worth taking.
Use special attacks that focus on where the creature is weakest, starting out we don't get much choice, but if Action or Mind are much lower than its health, use the "One hand hit 1" attack which can hit any pool... you might get lucky a couple of times in a row and hit it where it hurts. If you aren't that lucky but you hit it's health fairly hard, finish it off with a series of body blows. Be warned however, the body attack is pretty weak (600 dmg compared with 1200 for one hand hit 1) and it's slow, so only switch to this when the victim has about 1000 health points left.
If you are in a group and the creature turns to attack you and won't leave you alone, try using the 1h lunge attack a few times... this can make them kneel which buys enough time for your group mates (or pets) to regain aggro, and for you to stick a quick heal on yourself.
Make 'warcry' a macro button right next to intimidate (ignore the description, it's wrong!). Although it misses pretty often, when it hits it will stun the victim for 10 whole seconds - which is normally enough time for you to finish it off... since I discovered this I make a point of trying it at least once every fight. You may be able to find some clothing which enhances your ability with this - I found some shoulders which add +6 to warcry and intimidate and they really do seem to help.

    Conclusion:

I wrote this guide because there wasn't one here before, and I'm sure that I'm not the only person climbing this tree. I'm currently Novice Fencer 0,0,0,2 (I had a ton of combat experience from my Commando days which I managed to hold onto) and I'll add to the guide as I discover what lies ahead. Looking at the skill tree I'm wary of becoming too excited - it looks pretty dull to tell the truth and a lot of the boxes seem to be unimaginative or confer no real advantages... I only hope that I'm proven wrong as I slowly climb towards master!

    Afterword:

A fencing guide I found recently on another board recommends getting the fastest weapon you can - his reasoning was that fencers are all about agility and that getting a lot of hits in while a creature is knocked down will compensate for the lower damage while they are standing. I'm not sure how well this will work - my own experience has been that even though the lunge move will often make a creature change posture to kneel and human npc's will sometime fall over when dizzy, it is almost impossible to maintain this for more than a tiny fraction of any fight.
If he's correct then a curved sword sliced for speed is probably one of the best weapons for our class - I'll add more after I've found a good one and had a chance to play around with it.

I'm a master fencer, master swordsman, and master brawler, with allitle bit of medic to keep me alive.

I have been asked so many times what I enjoy more, pounding with my hammer or speeding through hits with my stun baton. They both have weaknesses but one is definetly better for PvP.  A stun baton can be one of the most lethal weapons in PvP if your opponent has no stun layered armor, then you just get him on the ground and cleave away. If a swordsman is fighting someone with high based armor they can just pound away at your mind. In PvE its a whole different story. The stun baton deals usually around 1000+ with a decent strong hit, while the swordsman can do 3000+ damage easily with II hand hit 3. If a swordsman is capped on speed and using a good damage hammer its an even match. If depends whether you prefer speed or damage. Or the mix? I couldn't choose at the novice stage of both, I grinded through Swordsman and just recently mastered it feeling that it wasn't all that great when I went on my first PvP run, I really didn't stand much of a chance against fencers even though I was defense and fs defense stacked. I choose fencer definetly for your PvP, its fun to have both because your able to do both and be able to use speed and damage, whatever your in the mood for. I HAVE ONE RECCOMENDATION!!! MASTER BRAWLER EITHER OR BOTH PATHS!!!

I just started SWG not to long ago..  I started with Dancer almost to master 8).. I wanted to fight so I picked fencer no reason in paticular but knew i didnt want TK cause everyone and there mom was doing that profession... I was lucky and found my first weapon a curved sword 1.8 76/175.. it may not have a whole lot of damage on it but the speed on this is nice.. right now I am fencer 1,4,0,2 my spin attack 2 does 700-1000 damage.. BTW this is real important as a fencer you need to have 2 weapons on you at all times a kenetic weapon such as a sword and a stun baton... my stun batton is 2.0 97/183 it comes in handy when fightin high kinetic monsters... special note stun batons do not hurt lairs what so ever dont know if its a bug or what... Right now I am in composite armor with 80% kinetic/lightning 71% to the rest. I am in dantooine doing missions solo not in a group.. best tactic examine your enemy check there kinetic resists choose your weapon and go straight for the lair attack it and stand on top of it all the monsters will charge you switch your attack to a monster and spam your spin attack boom in a min or less all red con monsters with 9k - 10k ham are dead.. mind you if they start walking away throw out a couple health shots they target health bar only which is usually the lowest at that point. you get about 3-4k xp each kill.. mind you I am buffed and I have 2 vasarian brandy and 2 of the focus buffing food starts with an A i think.. that way you can spam your specials with out having them hinder you what so ever.. I have never got incapped once doing this the only time i even use a stim pack is when the poision thats on me starts taking my mind instead of my health dont know if its supposed to or not but oh well..

now I do not know grammer and I can't spell at all.. just sitting at work being a SWG fiend and posting my story of a fencer.

I'm a 1/4/1/2 Fencer on Bria.  I've no sliced weapons and my favorite weapon is the Ryyk. It is comparable to the curved sword and looks awesome in my opinion. The Gaffi does great damage, but you'd have to get it sliced. Always keep a stun baton with you. You'll never know when a creature will have huge resists to kinetic, but there are creatures with stun protection, so keep 2 types of weapons on you at all times. The giant toturs (the turtle things) on Talus have a type with 100% special resis to Stun, so there might be others like it!

Lunge is also good for calling tapping a creature from 19m away, so you don't always have to chase it down. Berserk is great because you don't use up your stats butlimits you on specials. I like to hit them with the specials at least once (bleed, blind, dizzy) before I go berserk.

Against NPCs /follow will keep you in range for a good lunge. Pesky buggers will have a hard time shooting at you if your glued to them and making them kneel.

I have also found that surrounding a creature works wonders. It won't know who to attack. Depending on how many are in the group depends on the pattern. For and aft(2), triangle(3), square(4), etc. Aviod sitting in a group in front of the creature. They this makes it too easy for the creature to snap at you. And make sure you have things to heal the mind pool. Creatures have a tendancy to target my mind.

But this is definately a grueling profession. I've been playing for a couple of months now and just recently got 1/4/1/2. It came partly because I started to grind with creatures who give at least 1000 xp. Much less than that are not even worth your time. Examples are dune banthas and things on Yavin 4.

Like it has been mentioned get some CH skill. Pets are a fencer's best friend. Your pet can guard you and draw off one or two (I've had a few that drew all but one) creatures, enough for you to kill them slowly from behind. This takes me back to the positions I mentioned.

It is also a good idea to have novice medic or a doctor handy at all times. With novic medic you can buy stims and use them like a first aid kit in the middle of battle. Be wary of your mind though, you'll be using that for specials as well.

Other than that get with a good PA that likes to have fun. Soloing with fencer can get very monotonous, so you'll want the extra interaction. I'm with Fatal 'Xceptions (FX). We go on hunts and the guildchat is hysterical. Really helps out when you get tired of killing a hundred rasps (about 400 meat) to fill an order. The hunts don't always mean you get a ton of xp but which you prefer: killing a ton of banthas alone or a chaotic mob killing a ton of sharnaffs?

That said (man that was a lot) if you're on Bria and need training, FX has 4 fencers at the time of this posting, one of which is near or at Master. Not only that but 3 of us have started our own little fencer group. Send me a tell if you're interested. We're going to be starting missions for it too.

As for weapon I am using 2.5 sliced gaderiffi 131-221 bought(with 3.5 speed)in the shoping village about 1k to nw of coronet and with all the bonuses to speed we receive its almost sick how fast they bite the dust :). Creatuers I mean. Have no xp in pvp yet so can't tell much about that except I dueled a teras/doctor of similar skill level and the thing that won duel was combination of warcry2, intimidate2 and scatter hit to deplete as much as possible his mind pool and thus limit healing.
      And btw. I am a wookiee... :)

So far im fencer 1113.  Being a doctor I have all my stats in willpower mind and focus and I'm usually fully buffed so ham costs are negligable for armor (composite) and sword (ryyk by permafrost : flurry).

With that toughness I find the AOE attack is my best experience trick. Im working on footwork to get the 2nd AOE. Armored and buffed I can work on 4 or 5 tuskens at a time (some food and drink etc is required to keep the mind up).

I am going to try using a gafi stick soon to see how much more fun it is, and if i can find one a stun baton.

On single humanoids i find dizzy very effective, and sometimes keeping them on the ground the entire time. Else I alternate between using 1hand hit 2, and the multiple body part stab. I think I like the multipart stab the best.

I only use body hit if other people are damaging the health and I want it dead as quickly as possible.

LISTEN ALL YOU WANNA BE FENCERS !!

      FENCING RULES !!

Im a fencer and i use a composite armour, i tank for a group just like any other pet would (guess who gets nice xp). And this beeing said you need someone to heal you, suggest you team up with a combat medic, DONT DONT DONT use special moves as it will kill your mind ham, you will need this to tank with as players who heal you cant heal mind (we all know that suck).

In the start of a fight use Bleed attack from fencing or pistoleer.

The Stun Baton is great, get it sliced for DAMAGE, when creatures have a lot of kinetic switch to the stun baton.

Bring some Muon Gold, its by far the best friend you can have in a combat where you Solo.

Start by going for the speed tree, you will need speed to do a good amount of damage in a short time, also use beserk as this will greatly enhance that damage you deliver so fast.

Beeing said you should not use specials on creatures, NPC's are a diffrent story, they should be dizzied, Lungedhhit1, So they chance posture (down) and if your lucky and mostly you are they will fall on their ass. Now you wanna hit them with Health (bleed) and then Blind.

Should the poor NPC be down and your confident in your Mind use a few special (body).

If the NPC rises then hit him with Dizzy and lungedhhit1 again, you want him down with the dirt.

Now about the weapons. The Vibro Blade is your friend, true this gives a low damage it does it quick and the Ham's it uses (drains) is and should be the lowest on all fencing weapons worth your time.

Use this to make a dizzy on a large creature when you know the battle will take time.

      As a fencer 2 2 0 2 i can tackle Kwi Hunters On Dartomir, and grauls on dantoinne as 1 1 0 1.

Fencing is fun to watch fun to use in duel so dont be affraid to duel some fencers in town, I find that pikemen and 2hSwordsmen are easy preys, just wear composite armour and if they do, hit them with the Stun Baton, they will never stand a chance.

Enough of this, Enjoy as this is way overkill already just like a Master Fencer wearing Composite hitting with his stunbaton on a Master 2hSwordsman wearing composite and his stupid hammer.

I'm trying to compile a guide that lists where you can loot holocrons.  I noticed in the first sentence of this guide FightClub said that he looted an unused holocron. Could you tell me whereabout you looted it from?

Maddenman, I got my Holocron doing the Rebel quests from Garm in the 'Capitol' building in Coronet.  It dropped off a Dark Trooper in the final mission of that series.

If you want to be a fencer become a CH first.  Without something to draw the aggro you will surely be sleeping with the fishes.
Fencing is a profession which can be very difficult at times and is not for the faint of heart. :)

curved swords dont compare to a good stun baton which does 'stun' damage and last time i check nothing can block stun damage plus it has a chance to stun the creature you're fighting. Plus getting the fastest weapon becomes redundant because attack speed is capped at 1.0 so with bonuses(you get in attack speed later on) a good stun baton is far superior than a curved sword. I guess starting off with a curved sword might be better if you're soloing low lvl creatures but when you're dealing with squills you will love your stun baton.(Why u ask because NOTHING CAN STOP STUN DAMAGE at least from what ive seen so far)
