  • A GUIDE TO MASTERING RIFLEMAN

A complete, comprehensive and long guide to mastering the Rifleman profession, Written on Monday, September 20, 2004 after Update Patch 10: The Jedi Trials by

    Master Rifleman

    INTRO
Rifleman is an amazing, powerful and hugely popular skill in which many pursue. Rifleman is great in both PvP and PvE, and combines great with any skill in the game. Rifleman is often a tedious skill to master, but the reward in the end is great. This skill is not for the weak of heart. Rifleman are a unique type, and are proud. Enjoy.

    FROM MARKSMEN
First things first, you need a rifle. At novice, obviously, your only choice is a cdef, so use this to reach Rifles 1. I recommend you go to Kor Vella on Corellia and just in front of the starport beyond the tall building there is an open field, which is filled with things like Durnis and Corellian butterflies. Go out with your Cdef and just begin killing tings as they spawn like crazy. Youll have Rifles 1 in NO TIME at all. You and do the same for Rifles 2, as well. Between Rifles 1 and 2, grab a laser rifle if you can, as they deal out much better speed and damage.
For Rifles 3 and 4 however, you will need something a bit meatier to grind on. For this I recommend you head to Tyrena, also on Corellia, and outside of the perimeter of the city, you will find spawns of meatlumps, swoops, or other various NPC criminals. DO NOT waste your time on butterflies and durnis anymore, they will only give out around 50-100 exp now, while meatlumps will give out 200-400 exp. After you find a spawn of something you can kill, stand there and kill them whenever they spawn. You may need to loot them in order for them to respawn. (You can make some good money while looting these guys too, even though they only hand out 50-200 credits, it adds up! Plus, you can get things like loot kit pieces which sell for a bit on the market.) Grind these for 3 and 4, and youll find both skills go up fast.
QUICKTIP! USE HEADSHOT! Youll get headshots 1 and 2 under marksmen. USE THEM! These powerful shots will have you dealing out 500-1000 damage in no time with the right rifle. When grinding outside of Tyrena, buy some Vasarian Brandy (A mind enhancing drink) to headshot the NPCs from a distance, and you will kill the VERY fast without taking much, if any damage.
For novice, you can either find a more powerful spawn of NPCs outside of Tyrena, or grab missions from the mission terminal of the same type to get more powerful creatures each time. Another choice is quenkers on Dantooine. Get buffed from a master doctor for this. Go to a mission terminal and at time of writing quenkers missions payed out 5k to 5.2k per mission. Novice shouldnt take to long either, as you are getting more powerful.
    FROM NOVICE
Welcome to Rifleman! Like it so far? Either good or Aww, well hopefully this guide will change your mind.
Now that you have novice rifleman, you may be a bit confused as to where you go from here. Ill recommend a template to you later. For now we have to deal with another issue: weapons.
At novice you get certification for the T-21, a VERY powerful but VERY slow rifle. Its attack speed is about 7.8 UNsliced. The damage makes up for it though, but be careful, it has HIGH HAM costs and lots of creatures are resistant to its damage. Nonetheless, get one! It becomes very useful for lairs, highly armored creatures, and AT STs.
Laser rifles are what youll be using most of the time until you have Counter sniping 2, (when you get the cert for a Disruptor rifle, which Ill talk about later on) so find a good one. Laser rifles are quick little beasties that pack quite a punch. Get one thats sliced for damage.
Another weapon you may find handy to have around is the spraystick. Its small and doesnt have much damage, but its as fast as a lot of pistols, and has better accuracy for fighting things that are closer up. If you get one, make sure this guy is sliced for damage as well.
Now onto your template. I recommend going for the following skills in the following order:
    1. CONCEALMENT 1 Need it to get Concealment shot. Concealment shot disguises you from the thing you are attacking, without it noticing you. Spam it on creatures. The description of the shot in game, as with most descriptions, is misleading. It says chance of disguising, but the shot works nearly if not 100% of the time. If we didnt have this baby, rifleman would be one of the hardest combat professions to master. You can take out some VERY tough creatures with it. But the mind cost is high so again, use Vasarian brandy.
QUICK TIP! VASARIAN BRANDY: A RIFLEMANS BEST FRIEND
Vasarian brandy is a drink that chefs make that enhances mind and its substats. It very helpfully increases these so you can complete more shots without running out of mind. Combining this a high mind set and entertainer buffs, you become pretty much unstoppable, without mindlessly getting into grinding. (No pun intended ;) )
    2. COUNTERSNIPING 1 AND 2 You get very useful defenses with these two, and more importantly, the certification for the disruptor rifle. The disruptor, in my opinion, is the best rifle for PvE fighting. It is decently fast and does amazing damage. Combine it with a speed power up and the creatures simply cannot compete with you!
    3. SNIPER 4 After you have 0-1-2-? Its time for the tree I just KNOW youve been eyeing- Sniper. The name says what it is: a sniper! You get speed, concealment, and damage improvements under this branch. Plus, for you PvPers out there, at sniping 4 you the (in)famous sniper shot, which deathblows an enemy from a distance. By far best branch in the woods.
    4. THE REST OF EM. In my humble opinion, the rest of the skills, while useful, doesnt matter what order you get them in. If you want the assassin title, great, finish of concealment, or maybe those defenses you at Counter Sniping 3 tempt you, alright then, grab them. It doesnt matter.
ITS ALL WELL AND GOOD SICARIM, BUT WHERE IN THE BLOODY WORLD DO I GET THESE?
Good question, my friend! Time for another
QUICK TIP! DANTOOINE: HOME OF VICOUS GRAWLER MAULERS AND UHH FLOWERS.
Dantooine is a great place for rifleman to grind. The treeless fields of green and bright days provide an easy, unobtrusive place to grind out rifleman. Trees wont be around, so you wont get the constant You cannot see your target! system message. Also, the creatures are awesome for grinding. As if they are chanting Kill me kill me!
Quenkers are great for reaching the 4-1-2-? mark. They have around 5000-6000 HAM and are easily taken out with concealment shots. If shot at right, 6 will spawn per lair and youll be making 5k a pop. Sounds good. Because it is. By far go there and do these things for crying out loud! Now! You dont even need to be doctor buffed, just Vasarian brandy will work.
After you reach this mark, you may want to move onto pikets, also on Dantooine. Pikets hand out 9k missions and have around 9000 HAM. Continue to use concealment shot on them at 4-1-2-?.
    OR
You may want to continue on Quenkers. Youll be getting a little less exp, but its a very small change. You can use headshot 3 on them now, and you can get them in 3-5 shots with it. Youll find yourself gliding through them.
So now its time to just go out and GRIND. Be patient, and since Im sure many of you already have been out grinding, you know this. Its just like any skill: A lot of patience.
Youll hit 4-4-4-3 rather fast depending on how much you play and how much you keep at it, and once you do hit Rifle abilities 3, go out and just do quenkers for 200 combat exp per kill, and you will have that 150k combat exp in no time.

Well, by now, if you follow the steps correctly, and carefully, experiment a bit and watch your mind, youll be master rifleman now. Its great to turn on that title for the first time.

    CONCLUSION
In conclusion Id like to say that Im glad youve chosen rifleman: Its a path you will not regret. PvPers- youll have a field day. PvEers- Maybe you should go take on a krayt with some friends when you hit master (:

One more quick tip, from an experienced Rifleman, to make sure you get that fourth branch at around the same time as the others, or if you just want to get it done quicker, use c-12's on the quenker lair after you have killed the quenkers.

I had that problem too.  What worked best for me is to stay 60-64 meters out. It could be a pain if the creatures liked moving around but most of the time they didn't attack you.

What is the difference between Mind Shot and Head Shot.  I've heard people say to use Mind first, untill they Bleed, and then kill em with head shot.

Mindshot applies some damage, but more importantly mind bleed. Mind bleed drains the targets mind pool over a period of time. Eventually the target stops bleeding, but the higher level rifleman you are the better the bleed.

Headshot applies a large amount of damage to the mind pool only.

nice guide, i have mastered rifleman twice, i gave it up once and found that after being a rifleman, all other ranged class just lacked something, so i mastered it again. While on dantooine, doing quenker missions, i found that the fastest way to complete the mission and still get the most xp came after getting the area effect specials(can't remember what they are called now, it's very late). After getting the area effect specials, instead of targeting the critters, i would target the lair itself and spam the area specials. You'll mow through the critters and if any of them DO actually get to you, they might hit you once or twice before turning and heading back to heal their lair, which puts them back into your line of fire.
while this may not be the best tactic for avoiding damage to yourself, i took down the entire mission pretty quick, not to mantion i was funny to watch the critters try to decide whether they wanted to hit you or heal their lair...lol
again, nice guide to rifleman, and i hope this helps alot of people, rifleman is an awesome proffesion.

      Be Safe

It was only very recently i discovered area attacks. I went through the whole grind without using them.  I now use area attacks on imp bases to grind faction FP. I can take out 5 stormies at once with a good enough shot! Its not in the guide as of now, but use them too!

thanks for the heads up, Xlander and Jedirabbit.
