  • What is the point of Star Wars Galaxies?
By: Q-3PO, Posted at: Tue, Jun 10th 10:17 AM 2003, Last Edited: Tue, Aug 17th 4:08 PM 2004
    Rated 4.23 by 26 people

This was posted by Q-3PO, the SWG Community Relations Manager on the beta forums.

For years now the developers have given the cryptic answer To Live in the Star Wars Universe. Many people get this and have wanted to do just that for well over 20 years. However Living in the universe is too vague for some gamers (heck, most people dont quite understand what the point of living in the real world is Ill give you a hint to be good to one another).
So for the goal minded folks out there, here is the Point of playing SWG:

  • 1) Learn the basics of the game for a while so you dont appear to be a newbie.

  • 2) Accomplish all the different types of missions, from the quick and straight forward Mission Terminals to the multi-legged and more varied NPC static quests. You may need to travel beyond your starting city to find the more involved ones.

  • 3) Gain enough money to buy (or gain enough skill to make) a good weapon and other equipment that suits your character.

  • 4) Finish a themepark such as getting all the way to Jabbas Throne Room. Beat at least 1 dungeon on every planet.

  • 5) By doing factional missions or joining battlefields, gain enough faction points to rise up through the ranks in the Empire or Rebellion. Make enough points to try out all of the perks.

  • 6) Join a Player Association that fits your play-style. Help others members to accomplish their unique goals and they will help you with yours.

  • 7) Keep tabs on your Badges. You want to get over 100 of these to consider yourself a success in SWG.

  • 8) Spend all of your skill points to master several professions. (Be sure you surrender some skills and learn new ones to find the character combination best for you)

  • 9) Search the galaxy to find the spot you want to call home and build a house there so you can leave your mark on that galaxy. (Be sure to furnish it as an empty house doesnt count)

  • 10) When you are done with all that, work on figuring out how to unlock the Force Sensitive slot. If you can do that (and very few of you will and it will take several months, at least), then repeat the process with your new Jedi character until you are able to get the Jedi Master title.

  • When you have accomplished these 10 not-so-easy steps, you can say you have won the game. There you have it. But please note, this list is subject to change as we add new content such as player cities, player vehicles, more quests, and full expansions.

Now, of course, feel free to substitute any of the above with other activities you enjoy in the game, such as becoming a famous entertainer, well-sought after crafter, always in demand doctor or highly feared bounty hunter. Or just have fun exploring, fishing, dueling, getting married, attending parties, meeting new people, helping people stuck in step one or even hosting your own events for each other. Definitely try to Role Play (it isnt hard, you dont have to act goofy, just dont bring real world conversation into the spatial chat).

Sorry for the obvious sarcasm, but that honestly sounds fun like running in a hamster wheel, only with scenery. Rather than something that'll leave me feeling humped and used after I'm done playing with it, why can't they instead make it dynamically interesting?

... Or even, dare I say,

      Bug free?

Collecting badges is like a fanboy scavenger hunt, and mastering professions so it gets displayed in my profile is ridiculously stupid. I truly, sincerely hope that the game is not actually revolving around the principles described in this article. That will be lame beyond comparison.

        You're boring.
That being said, I think this article is being sarcastic.  It's saying what to do to "win" the game.
Anyone who has ever played a role-playing game knows the idea isnt to "win" anything. Otherwise, when the game ends (and it will) you're faced with a character you put yourself into and now the character rides off into the sunset, so to speak.
No, the idea of a RPG is to put yourself into a character you've created to interact with a fictional world. To live in the Star Wars universe. If you look for a point beyond that, you're a fool. And your story will one day end.
        Probably something like this:
"Karlacca the Wookie Jedi roved far and wide and did great deeds. Then he just...dissappeared..." and Jack Smith logged off and realized he was bored. he had one and the game was now pointless. So Karlacca was no more... bye bye.

      My god,

I NEEEEEEEED to play this game...
Wish i could sleep for 15 days so i could wake up and start playing on a European Server.

This game will rule all MMORPG's and the best part is because of the long waiting time for European players to be able to play on this side of the big puddle, loads of bugs will already be patched by the time we can start playing...

31st october, a day to look out for!

        yeah you must be.

There are the 2 badges for the monthly acts as of right now. (which are actually bi-monthly).

There are the badges for the honor, altruism, intellect, Heroism, hermit, courage quests. (that's 6)

There are badges for themeparks, for which we have no idea how many of these will be in the game. I personally know of at least 3 right now.

Then theres badges that the devs personally hand out to specific people and you don't get these from doing quest or missions. The fascinating background is one that I know of.

theres a new quest that just went to test center and will probably be in the patch with the vehicles in december.

There will always be new badges added over time also.

Add'em all up and you will have well over 100 badges to achieve.

      excellent outline for game goals!
i played EQ for several years and had a 60 Cleric.  i tend to become attached to my characters and i hated having to create a new name for myself every time i wanted to play a different type of class. one thing that isn't mentioned by Q-3PO is that if you go as far as you can in one skill tree and then decide on a change in the way you want to play, you can just surrender the ability points and head off in a new direction. this eliminates the need to create a whole new character. your friends list is still intact and any reputation your character has made is still valid. the replay value that ability points creates is huge. and that's without any additional content or expansions!

Jedi I will search after and if I do or not I will play as myself and be in the community as Kaillion on Bria as what I want to be to keep my intrest going ... So above all else this is a game to where you are living a Star Wars life and Be in your own movie So if you knocking it don't do it if you are actually making some wierd sort of guide Kudos to you be save and adventure Well

I thought so too... I had only played in the Betas and for the longest time I felt "this is EQ with a SW skin... I'm not wasting my money on tis!"
Then, two days ago, the price dropped to $29 a box.  I said "what the hey... that's only a little more'n a tank o' gas"...
The game had improved dramatically since I was on the Beta.
        SWG has gained coolness! :o)
It far surpasses EQ... but then again, EQ II will kick its a$$ if it does half of what they're advertisin'!
