  • Guide: Dual Monitor/widescreen with SWG 1.0

    What is Dual Monitor/Widescreen?
    ------------

    Should you happen to be lucky enough to possess a card that allows for two monitors(and two monitors), or possess a widescreen display, the following information will let you run Star Wars Galaxies at the proper resolution to get the widescreen effect.

    The Setup
    ----------

    1) Go into the folder SWGs is installed in.
    2) Open the file "options.cfg" in notepad.
    3) Look for the following entry:

    [ClientGraphics]
    useHardwareMouseCursor=1
    screenWidth=1024
    screenHeight=768

    4) Here you can change your resolution to *any* resolution setting. The screen will not be distorted by unusual resolutions in game, rather, the resolution change will simply alter how much of your surrounding world you can see at any one time.

    Widescreen time
    ----------

    By being able to change the resolution to any value, we can now make dual monitors and wide screen displays work. For a widescreen display such as a widescreen HDTV or widescreen monitor, simply change the resolution to the appropriate one to fill the display. Check your manuals or the manufacturor's website for the exact resolution.

    Dual Monitors - Geforce 4 cards
    ---------
    1) Go into display properties, settings tab, advanced button, Geforce 4 tab, nview display mode

    2) Set the nview mode to horizontal span, apply the settings, then click ok.

    3) Back in the display properties, settings tab, take note of your current resolution. For example, if you are using two displays running at 1024x768 resolution, then your resolution with horizinatl spanning will be 2048x768.

    4) In the options.cfg file, change your resolution to 2048x768 in notepad then save the file.

    5) Launch SWG and enjoy dual monitor widescreen display.

    So far I only have confirmation on this working on my own machine. Here are my specs:

    Windows XP
    Intel P4 2.26ghz processor
    512mb DDR PC2700
    Geforce 4 ti4600
    Latest detonator drivers from nvidia.com

    I have one report of an error when trying to do this with a Radeon 8500. Here is the info I'd like to ahve to fill out the guide completely:

    - Results when trying with Geforce FX and older modle GeForce cards with dual monitor support. I belive it should work just the same as my GF4 so long as you are using the latest drivers.

    - Confirmation of this working with Radeon cards. Things to try if you have problems: make sure your desktop resolution is the same as the resolution you tell the game to run in(ie. make sure you are spanning your desktop across both monitors), span across both monitors but run in windowed mode, lower the graphics settings in SWG prior trying dual monitor mode.

    - Confirmation of this potentially working with other dual monitor cards and/or with multiple cards in a single system.

    - Confirmation of this working with older windows operating systems such as Windows 98, ME, and 2K.

    Should anyone run into any problems or is able to confirm a way to get this to work with other cards, please post it here and once enough info is gathered, I'll toss up an improved guide for all card models. Good luck and enjoy.

      The only problem that I see with this, if it does work for anyone.  Is that I currently have a dual monitor set up with my GeForce FX 5950 Ultra called "Duelview" and my main CRT monitor is 1600x1200 and my LCD screen is in 1280x1024 mode. If I were to goto Horizontal Span I would have to change my 21" monitor to 1280x1024 so it would look right. I'll try it out for SWG though and get back to this post if I get it to work

      Well as it seems this is the only place I've found on the web with any reports of this working, if you can read this and you currently have dual (or more) monitor support working with ANY configuration, please say so on this thread, as of October 28th, 2003.  It sounds as if SOE has patched to prevent this from working at all, but I'd rather be sure before I give up. I have a Radeon 9700 with two different 19" monitors and I'd love to test and troubleshoot this a bit more once I have confirmation that it's still possible.

      Thanks all

But with recent updates on my card, the game, and dirextx 9b this option is no longer available for me. And ive noticed a lot of driver issues with all the new downloads but being that i did all 3 at the same time i dont know which one is causing swg to crash. Is there anyone else having any kind of driver issues after the new updates or if you have downloaded the new directx have you noticed any crashes. O btw im running windows xp pro which is a driver nightmare of its own very sensetive operating system one that if your system locks up your saposed to be able to close out the program that locked up still keeping your system up and running with out rebooting. This isnt the case what ever is causing my game to lock up is locking me out of my computer completly and rebooting my pc by its self, if there is anyone else out there that knows what im talking about your input is greatly apprecialed...the only way i can run with out crashing is in windows mode which isnt a big deal but still somethings crashing my pc and i need help plus running at 3k x 1k gave me a great view.

      I upgraded to the Cat3.8 drivers the other night (the same night the last big swg client update came out) and have since been unable to run the game in "normal" resolutions.  1024x768 is what I've been using for months, and now it's not even an option. In fact the only standard resolution available is 1600x1200, which is too small. The resolution options are all whacky: no 1024x768, no 1280x1024 etc. Instead, i get 1280x768 and a bunch of other really strange options. The game looks all skewed and distorted now!

      I am not sure if it was the driver update or the SWG update that did it, but there are all sorts of new and different options in the client options tab(s) that weren't there before. Any ideas?

      Thanks in advance for any advice!

      When you span the game across two monitors, where does you character show up?

      In the center of the two monitors? So half of you is on one side and the other half is on the other?

      Enlighten me please.

      I also have a GeForce 4 (but Ti4200).  I am able to get the screen resolution to the value I need (2560 x 1024!!!) but the regular desktop appears on my second monitor, and not the right hand side of the SWG screen. There must be some more settings either in the 'detonator' drivers (DirectX on both monitors yes or no???...) or SWG (windowed or not? borderless?...) that I'm missing.
      Any Ideas???

        Try going to options and turning off full screen mode.  Set it to borderless window. It should fix that. And make sure you have the most recent drivers for your card

      As of today, the folks at SOE have initiated a default settings patch to stop people from adjusting their screen resolutions.  This has been causing crashes and lockups all over the place for anyone running "outside the norm".

      IF you choose to adjust your settings yourself, save a copy of the config file to another directory, do your alterations, then try the game. If it crashes, just copy your saved config file back into the directory and over write the one you changed.
