I wanted to put together a brief post to help folks understand a bit more about player made weapons. First though, a few common situations that I see come up.
1) ALL of the 65-155 Laser Rifles out there, to the best of my knowledge, are pre-patch guns and they WILL say you don't have a certification. Quit trying to sell them, quit trying to use them. They don't work, and they aren't gonna work. Oh, and they hit for like 15 damage (because they have no certification), so you don't want one anyway.
2) MOST of the advanced weapons in the game right this minute can NOT be made by a Weaponsmith, due to a variety of bugs. We cannot make Laser Rifles, Spraysticks, Laser Carbines, E11 Carbines, SR Combat Pistols, Power 5 Pistols, etc. either due to missing resources (Plumbum Iron being the main one) or broken factories. When some of these problems are fixed expect to start seeing these weapons around.
Ok, that being said, if you want a better weapon, what do you do? If you are still using your CDEF weapon, find an Artisan who can make you a player crafted CDEF weapon. A skilled Artisan can use Experimentation points to make quite a nice CDEF weapon. They are quick and easy to make, and should not cost much.
Once you're advanced a bit more, and you want something better, then what? The first thing I'd do is check the Bazaar on the non-starter planets. There is SO much junk on the Bazaar terminals on the starter planets that there's no point in a Weaponcrafter putting up for sale there, and no point in you looking for them, cause they just get lost in the clutter. Almost all my Bazaar weapons get placed on Lok, so if you look there you might find something good.
If you can't find anything that way, it's time to track down a Weaponcrafter. Look around Weaponcrafting stations in cities, ask friends, etc., and you should be able to find one. Most Weaponcrafters like making weapons for people, which is why we picked that skill. We're happy to make one for you. Try to keep a few things in mind though. Once we get to the Weaponcrafter tree, just about everything requires at least three subcomponents plus the final combine. It takes time to make a quality weapon. So please be patient. It's hard to chat much when you have a crafting window open all the time, so we might not talk much, but we're clicking away.
What makes a good weapon? Experimentation makes a MUCH bigger difference than anything else. If you are concerned about it, ask your weaponcrafter how many experimentation points they have. It makes a huge difference in the final weapon. Quality of the materials also makes a difference, as does a general quality committment. For example, when I make a weapon, I destroy every sub-component that doesn't come out well. I think many Weaponcrafters do this. This takes more time, but it gives you a much better weapon in the end. And every single crafted weapon is unique, so we just can't tell you exactly what the final weapon will be until it's done, but a good Weaponcrafter should be able to give you a basic idea of how it will end up.
If you've gotten this far, and you have found a good Weaponsmith, what should you get? Here are the weapons I've found that are consistently good:
Rifle:
DLT20a Rifle. Tusken rifles just aren't very good. They don't hit very hard and they are slow. A well experminted DLT20a Rifle will have damage around 100-150, attack speed below 7, and low costs for specials. Until some bugs are fixed, this is a great rifle.
Carbine:
DH17 Carbine. With almost all the other carbines currently broken due to one bug or another, this is about the only choice. Laser Carbines and E11 Carbines can't be made right now. A good DH17 Carbine should have damage around 60-130, attack speed below 5, and low cost for specials.
Pistols:
FWG5 Pistol, Scout Blaster, DH17 Pistol, DL44 Pistol. These are all good pistols, and each have their merits. If you've just gotten your first pistol box, find someone to make you a good DL44 Metal pistol and you'll be in good shape for a while.
Once you can use a Scout Blaster, they rock. A good one will be around 45-80 damage with attack speed below 3 and VERY low specials cost. Great ones can be even better.
DH17 Pistols can be as high as 60-90 damage with an attack speed of around 3.5 and low specials, but that's nearly a perfect pistol with great quality materials, so yours might be a bit less. Personally I don't like this pistol, mostly cause it's got screwed up Carbine graphics and animations, but it hits good.
FWG5 Pistols have a much bigger damage range, so expect a good one to be around 30-120ish damage with a speed around 3.5 or so, and low specials. This is my current favorite pistol for a more advanced Pistol user, but you need a more highly skilled Weaponsmith to make a good one, as experimentation on these is a bit harder than on the other two.
Be sure to look for or ask about specials cost when having a weapon made. The last thing you want is a hard hitting weapon that takes away half your Mind bar every time you use a few specials. The cost for specials can be reduced through expermination, and a good Weaponsmith will make weapons that have low costs for special attacks.
How much folks charge for these is very variable. I try to keep my prices fairly reasonable, but in the end you decide what you want to pay. Most Weaponsmiths don't need much of anything in the way of materials, but some might, so if you have some and want to trade it doesn't hurt to ask.
If you REALLY get stuck looking for a weapon, send me mail and I'll see if I can make one for you. If you do, plan to travel to one of the non-starter planets (usually Lok) as there's just too much lag around the cities on the other planets for weapons to be made effeciently.
Hope this is useful info...
