  • Newbie guide to the Medical Factory
By: Apoch, Posted at: Mon, Jul 14th 12:46 PM 2003
    Rated 5.00 by 11 people

So you have saved up for a Food and Chemical Factory and you have access to a Personal Food and Chemical Crafting machine and you are ready to start mass producing medicine.

There is no good guide to doing this at all so I thought I would write up one and hopefully help folks out some. I am using Stim D as an example here, but the process is the same for any medicine/crafted item.

    Placement

Place your factory in a spot central to your harvesters if you have them; if you buy your resources place the factory where ever is convenient to you. If you have a house for your personal crafting station I would recommend that you place the house near the factory, it will save plenty of time re-doing schematics and items. For my setup, my house (and personal crafting station) is the next plot over from my factory and the entrance faces the factory for super easy access.

    Schematics

To make things in a factory you need Schematics. These are made the same way you make items with your Food and Chemical Crafting tool. When you choose what you want to make (Biological Controllers in this case), you want to use the resource that 1) you have most of, and 2) is the best quality for what you want. Perform the first step to manufacture like you always would and then proceed. You want to experiment to get the most charges and the best effect. Any leftover experiment points can be used if you want; durability is not used so far as I can tell. When the choice to make a prototype model or manufacturing schematic appears, you want to make a schematic. Note that the quantity slider bar goes from 1 to 100 and there is a text box next to that. You can manually input 1000 into the text box; thats the max. The next step is very important (they all are but this one saves some confusion): NAME the schematic. Use something you can either remember, or write down what it is. This is helpful later when you may have 3 schematics for Biological controllers and you need to remember which one needs which ingredient. Every time you change a resource, you will need a new schematic for that item with the new resource. I like to name mine by date and I keep a pad near the computer that I list the ingredients on for the date that I used.

    Making the items: Sub items

So you have your factory setup and you want to make Stim Ds. Just press GO right? Not quite. First you need to make the sub parts of the Stim D. You need schematics for each sub part; Biological Controller (BC), Chemical Release Duration Mechanism (CRD), and Liquid Suspension (LS). So lets start by selecting the factory radial menu, then the BC schematic. Then open the Factory input hopper and put in the needed ingredients in enough quantity that you can make as many parts as you want.

After you have the ingredients in, tell the Factory to Start Manufacturing Objects. Let this run 10 min or so and tell it to Stop Manufacturing Objects. Look in the Output hopper and you will see a small quantity of BCs in a factory Crate. Take the crate out and put it into inventory; you will need it shortly.

Now, make small runs of the rest of the needed sub parts (CRD and LS). Get them out of the Output Hopper and into your inventory.

Making the items: Main Schematic and Main Item

Go back to your personal crafting station. Open your inventory and remove one of each item from the crate (heres where the Stim D requirement of two identical crated BCs comes in remove TWO of them). Once you have enough out of crate items in your inventory to make the main item, fire up your crafting kit and do the first step like normal, placing the BCs, CRD, LS, organic, and inorganic into the item. Then experiment on it for charges and effectiveness (you can repeat this till you get the success you want). Once experimentation is done, make the schematic. Remember to name it and set the max quantity you want.

Now that the new Stim D schematic is done, go back to your factory and load up the schematic. Then put the needed parts (crates and loose items will go into the hopper) into the hopper. Tell the factory to start making items.

    After Manufacturing

You will need to make more of the sub parts then do another run of the final product. I like to start my factory before work, when I get home and then again after my evening play time so I get in two or three runs per day. Just make sure you have the necessary ingredients in the hopper to make what you need. Leave the BCs and other items in the crates, the factory will pull them out as needed.

    CHANGING SOMETHING

Remember, resources change. This nice feature will aggravate you to no end. Suppose one day resources change; you can still get everything but Copper Type A, you now get Copper Type B. And you needed Copper type A for your CRD. Now you need to get enough copper type B and remake the schematic for the CRD (rename it to reflect a different unit). Make some of these and then REMAKE your Stim D schematic (because one sub part changed you now need to change the main item). Annoying, but its something you have to live with.

When you go out hunting and have a group to heal, remember you can keep your Stims in crates and just double click on the crate to pop a new one out when you need. No need to clutter your inventory with 30 stims; just keep 2 out and pop new ones out of the crate as needed.

A few other things to remember:

-Factories need maintenance money and power
    -Houses need maintenance money
-Always experiment to get the best of each sub part so you can get the best final item.

I hope this guide helps some. And remember to look on the Official SWG forums for more up-to-date information. Make sure to visit the Doctor and Medic forum for the best updates.

Do you have to stay near the factory for it to work?  The first time I used a factory I put in my items, did a couple missions, came back and opened up the hopper and nothing was made. I tried it again, but stayed this time, and it worked. Do you really need to stay by it?

You shouldn't have to.  Insert your schematic. Then, access the input hopper and put in your resources. Then, tell the factory to start.

I use our PAs factory and I usually dump everything in, start it then go back to my house and log out. The factory is usually done when I log back in again.

Oh, and just an update to the guide, the quantity slider bar now goes from 1 to 1000, not 1 to 100.

Sure you can! what you need to do is find some benzoine composite, some reconstituted  phosphorus #5, yellow citric #2, cocoa extract, and a small ammount of maple gum. You mix this all together and pack firmly into each nostril and inhale violently so the compound passes thru your sinuses into your throat. At that point you swallow said compound. wait approximatly 8 hours, and then deficate into a 5"X 5" cupcake tin. place cupcake tin into your factory. and process for 10 min. **very important** you must allow 5 min cooling time post processing! then pull out Mr. Choreboy and the ever handy Finlandia bottle load pipe and ENJOY! mmmmmmm, mmmmmmmmm.

      hope that helps,

Anyone notice that using factories is kinda, well, sloppy?  At least they made it so can redeed for free. Unfortunatly, when you redeed you can't just plop it back down where it was, so your factory keeps moving further and further away from your house.

And as last post said, keep a supply of "junk" schematics to reload in case a run fails in the middle and you have to redeed. Don't wanna lose that nice BEC :)

Well if anyone has that same problem I just mentioned, it seems to happen when you manually stop the factory from producing items when its in the middle of manufacturing. Currently there is no re-deed fee so the way to fix it is to just re-deed your factory and it will work again. Re-deeding it you will still have all of your maintenance pool and power pool but it will delete the current schematic loaded in it so I suggest replacing it with a useless schematic before you try to re-deed the factory. I'd imagine it might do the same with any items in the output or ingredient hopper so remove those before you re-deed it. -Apocalypseo

Factories are a joy, are they not?  Here's the secret for using those factory crates:
      1. Have more than you need
      2. Have at least 2 crates of each of the subcomponents.
      3. Load them into the factory in the EXACT order that they are listed on the schematic. (This does not mean move then around later.)
      4. Like items must be together.
      5. Run

On a side note - I always make my schematics for 1000 items - whether I run for 20 or 500.

It will take from the inorganic resource, then organic, then liquid suspension, then stop dead not able to take one from the chemical release duration mechinism and send me an email 3 items made, or 0 items made or whatever. Then I have to figure out where it's sticking and manually remove items from that crate to get it going again. VERY time consuming and wastes resources.

Is anyone else having this issue? Am I just going to have to uncrate 150 components and manually drag them in for every finished stim crate I do?

If you are NOT having this problem, please say exactly how you put things in and start things up. Like you make a new schematic for 100 stims, load the input hopper in a certain order, then load the schematic, then close all windows then start it. Or whatever.

      Thanks
