Our default man is named C.A.R.L. (Clone of Any Real Lunkhead)

This thread owes its existence to the hard work and dedication of those who helped me test my theory on the thread "YOU choose your holocron professions."
http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=jedi&message.id=212025&page=1

As our research indicates, you DO choose your holocron, and by extension, your jedi-enabling, professions.

The Theory (in short):
By creating many identical characters (same starting prof, physical attributes, species, and start location) and by trading a holocron to that character before ANY other variables are introduced, we can, with sufficient testing, see if your Jedi professions are dictated by these factors rather than completely at random.  After testing, this does seem to be the case.  The holocrons, however, seem to give one of the FIVE random professions required for becoming a jedi.  This is why our tests did not all instantly come up with the same profession (but instead resulted in a repeatable group of professions).

Fundamental precept:
Holocrons tell you one of the 5 random professions you must master to become a jedi, but repeat the last holo-message if the previous one has not been mastered.  Only after mastering 4 holo professions will the last holo fall silent.  By eliminating all other variables and running repeated tests on cloned characters, we can establish which 5 professions are required for a character with those attributes.

Competing theories:
It was theorized as we began our research, that these professions were influenced by CD key or other variables.  This is still possible, but the research shows that it is exceedingly unlikely.  See the original thread for details.  More research regarding specific server and perhaps dates of creation must be completed, but we can, at this stage, say that two characters created with identical attributes on separate servers will have the same group of holocron professions.

The Test:
A number of players out there have an alt, and anyone with alts (along with 2 x-mas holos) can test this.  I urge players to continue testing until we have absolutely no doubts about each of our professions.  If you have an alternate account, or a friend you trust to hold your holo, you too can perform this test.

1) Consolidate your 2 holos into one character, then delete your other.  Make sure both characters are made on the same account (eliminate CD key as a variable).  Do this on 2 separate servers.

To make the trade by playing two characters at once, see here:
http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Development&message.id=499520&highlight=two+accounts+one+computer#M499520

2) Make sure the character created is a human male. (another variable eliminated)

3) Create the male human on that server with ALL appearance sliders all the way to the right for each attribute.  This means clicking through "face" and "body" etc. and moving all sliders fully right.  Alter all colors and all boxes to the lower left box (characters are identical thus far).  When the hair option comes up, DO NOT MESS WITH HAIR.  Allow for the default hairdo.

4) Name your character CARLX CARLX (that's "CARLX" as first name and "CARLX" as last name, ALL CAPS.  If this name is taken, use CARLXX or CARLXXX, or something that adds characters to the name, but still begins with "CARL" and ends with "X"  This is to make sure that SOE "randomness" programs don't search out the first letters or last letter as a variable to add to the profession equation.)

4.5) Make your character an artisan, but do not take the tutorial and do not shuttle (except from the small starting room to Restuss), fight, or otherwise gain xp of any kind.

5) Create your characters in Restuss, Rori, as many cities are already "full" at character creation, and Restuss rarely is.  IF FULL, then use another city on Rori, to minimize possible variation.  When reporting your results, TELL US if your starting city varies.

6) ALL CARLS:  Skip the training session with your character, so as not to pollute your character with experience in ANY profession.

6.5) Do not screw with the stat migration on your character. (May or may not be a variable, best to eliminate it)

7) Use a holocron with CARLX CARLX.

8) In order to prove that our results are truly valid, post screenshots of your holocron speaking as well.  The default "take screenshot" key is the "Print Screen" key.

Notes from previous responses:
Profession given is NOT based on CD KEY.  If it were, our tests could not have produced the results they have.  It may be a factor, but it appears unlikely.  There is much anecdotal evidence (it said Architect, which was the last/first/middle holo profession for my main character!), but the sum of the evidence seems to conclude definitively that this is just coincidence and popular myth.
Customizations from IDs after character creation would not likely change the character's holo professions.  Otherwise there would be ID junkies who had to do 10 or more holo professions before getting a silent holo, as their holo profs would be changing constantly, and the high number right now is 4.
Pattern Theory; don't know how this squares with pattern theory, and pattern theorists would have to run their own tests to see if their theory is correct or not in light of CARL theory.

Summary in next post:

Format is Forum Name (date reported) Server (if given), followed by their post regarding their testrun, Profession Given, or, if a likely invalid test, Profession Given in red then variables not eliminated during their test.  Problem variables confirmed as non-C.A.R.L. statistics will get a RED tag.  I assume (perhaps wrongly) that most details left out of the account are consistent with Carl's requirements.

Hypoxia (1/08/04)

Species: Human
All skill boxes scrolled all the way to the right
All color boxes checked in lower left corner
Starting city: Restuss, Rori
Starting Prof: Artisan  (tried to not train, but it did it automatically)

Holocron Used and said: "Master Pistoleer"

Master Pistoleer
Possible variables: hair, name, server

Chapter9 (1/14/04)

I traded a holo to a friend last night, deleted [own character] and remade the following:

Created a Male Human.

Put all sliders fully to the right.

Make all colors the color on the bottom left.

Started as a artisan and got Pistoleer.

I was hoping for a different one, it may have just been luck,

Master Pistoleer
Possible variables: hair, name, server

QuiGonWindu (1/14  1/17[x2]  1/21) Eclipse, Gorath, Lowca, Unknown

Created A Male Human on Eclipse All Sliders to the Right All Colors (and hairstyle) bottom left Started as Artisan on Restuss... Got "Master Architect"

Master Architect (potentially invalidated)
Possible variables: hair, name

Gorath:

All sliders to the Right, all Skin & Hair Color pickers to the Bottom Left.
Starting on Rori, Restuss

Result - Master Pikeman

Master Pikeman
Possible variables: name

Starting on Rori, Restuss

Result - Master Doctor

Master Doctor
Possible variables: name

Holo #4: Master Pistoleer!

Master Pistoleer
Possible variables: NONE!
(this final test was posted last night after enforcing evolving consistency rules regarding names and all other attributes.  This is the first positive match for a Pure-Carl, and is consistent with MUCH of our other results.  Server was not listed, so we can't yet cross-index CARLX CARLX's server with our other results... yet.)

IMPORTANT LINK:
http://www.ls-l.com/swg/

This is QuiGonWindu's site with pictures of his Carls.  Only the last one has the correct name, but his excellent work has advanced this field immensely.  MANY thanks to him, and please, all further testers take a screenshot and post just like this!

Drummerboychris (1/15/04) Lowca

male, human, lowca, all sliders to the right, all colors lower left. novice artisan, restuss rori.

Master Pistoleer [later post added use of default hair]

Master Pistoleer
Possible variables: name

TodoProudfoot (1/16/04) Sunrunner

My character opened the holocron and it said Master Ranger on SunRunner (or whatever that server is)

I stared in Kor Vella though and did the start up tutorial also (by accident).

Master Ranger
Possible variables: name, hair, location, tutorial (Invalidated by too many variables, may not be Carl-specific)

Deemer (1/17/04) Ahazi

Male Human

all sliders to right

all colors to bottom left

start proff: Artisan

name: Deemer

Server: Ahazi

Told prof by holo: Tailor [hair default, posted later]

Master Tailor
Possible variables: name

Tenfo (1/18/04)

I started my alt account Human in Coronet and got Architect first.

Master Architect
Possible variables: name, starting location, server, other info
(he may not have made an actual Carl, his post did not give any further info)

Colaboy (1/21/04)

ok.. I created the male character in test and used my xmas holo from another account.. it told me to master  the last profession my main character got before silent holo.. its said master merchant.

Master Merchant

Summary and testing results format:
Profession, variables that may spoil results
Tester, date, server (if given)

Valid Test results by profession:

Pistoleer: hair, name, server,
Hypoxia (1/08/04)

Pistoleer: hair, name, server
Chapter9 (1/14/04)

Pistoleer: server only
QuiGonWindu (1/21/04)

Pistoleer: name
Drummerboychris (1/15/04) Lowca

Tally of Pistoleers: 4.  Statistical improbability of 4 of 8 valid tests resulting in an identical professions given 32 random professions: One in several hundred thousand.

Tailor: name
Deemer (1/17/04) Ahazi

Doctor: name
QuiGonWindu (1/17/04) Lowca

Pikeman: name
QuiGonWindu (1/17/04) Gorath

Architect: name, hair
QuiGonWindu (1/14/04) Gorath
Of note: One test invalidated for other reasons also resulted in Architect, but may have been a valid test due to changing variables that did not matter.  Further testing will confirm or invalidate Architect as a profession on the list.

Tally of other valid professions: 4.

Total number of Carl professions: 5.
Total number of professions required to unlock the FSCS: 5.
Do not give in to statistics.  The non-pistoleer professions may also prove to be invalid tests, as "Name" is the most recently added category in the slew of required consistencies.  IT IS POSSIBLE TO GET ANOTHER PROFESSION.  If you do, it is likely because one of these other 4 professions was tested improperly, or because name was not calculated into early tests.

That is the purpose of this post, to refine the testing and determine (through repeated holocron confirmation, as with pistoleer) exactly what Carl's 5 professions are.

Final Results:
It is fairly likely that by mastering Architect, Tailor, Doctor, Pikeman, and Pistoleer with a Carl clone that you would unlock your FSCS, but confirmation of the non-repeated professions is required.  The easiest way to do this (statistically) would be to master pistoleer with a holo-Pistoleer-Carl and then use a second holocron.  This, however, would be a large investment of time.  I welcome any pistoleer-Carl to try it, however.  It would be MOST enlightening if you go Architect next, or one of the other Carl profs.

WHERE THIS IS GOING.

We will continue to test on Carl, and then on another character with one variable until we find a combination that yeilds the following:
Artisan, Architect, Image Designer, Entertainer, Medic.  Or some similar combination that is PAINFULLY easy to complete.  Right now, it's VERY likely that if someone who created a Carl mastered Pistol, Arch, Pike, Doc, and Tailor, that he would open the jedi slot.  (other profession MAY be Ranger instead of another single checked prof, but Pistol and Arch seem confirmed).

Pistol, Arch, Pike, Doc, and Tailor are not TOO terribly difficult, but if we could swap pike and pistol for artisan and medic, we'd make our lives a LOT easier.

LIFE AFTER CARL:

After another 10 or so tests of Carl, if our tests give repeat ansers (i.e. pistoleer, architect, etc.), then we will alter WEIGHT, and move the slider all the left.  We will keep name, starting city, and all other variables the same and see which profession(s) change in the list.

Thanks for your posting, your tests, and your support for this great breakthrough in Jedi-unlocking research.

May the force be with us all.

Not a chance, it took them months to come up with the "brillaint" system they already have, althogh on the other hand I think they are desperate to do anything to keep from fixing the major jedi character issues... Maybe this could tie them up for another 6 months.

The magic system in EQ was figured out and it didn't mean that the whole system changed.  Instead, people just learned how to use the system.

This is done by the same people, and I bet that we'll end up with the same results.  A quick pat on the back, a subtle slap of "why didn't you figure that out sooner" and something shiny and new to take our minds off the fact that anyone can be a jedi.

I have 2 holocrons on about 6 different servers.

I could try this 12 times i guess. but i would be losing a lot of money via holocrons.

Yay.... I'm glad to see my holo wasn't wasted!   I hadn't checked up on the CARL stuff in a while.

I have mastered 16 professions with my main character.... but would probably stop doing that crap and master the 5 using CARL if someone can open using this method.

Anyhoo... keep us updated on your friend's grind of these profs!

Forgot to mention... I think to really confirm this, we will need multiple matches with the other professions too.  Or... if anyone who got pistoleer wants to master that, then go on to the next profession.... we could see if that one is in the list.
