This is my random newbie tip of the day, look below for it please.

But before I get to the point a short story; skip it if you are lazy, although that's the point of this thread.
When I entered the game, I ran around with my trustworthy CDEF pistol and killed stuff around Tyrena. I could make like 1-2k credits a day, I never bothered with cloning because I couldn't afford and there was no death penalty. I tipped entertainers around 100-200 creds, and medics the double amount, just because I didn't have that much (yes we tipped everyone back then!) Now after like 2 weeks, when I was camping in the wilderness, a random guy came along, sat down we talked a little. Heh, this might have been a completely different game, seeing how this would NEVER occur today, btw. He told me, he makes his money by buying weapons and selling them after a slice. Didn't know what that means, but I decided to pay him 12k from my 15k credits I made in two weeks to get that real cool scout blaster with under 2 seconds speed.

Jump to today, one year later. I have my helper tag on most of the time, I like helping and talking to newbies, gives you that special nostalgia feeling. Anyway, nowadays I get very frequent tells from people asking me for money. I tell them, I don't give away money so they ask, WTH do you have a helper tag then? Well I help people. So how am I supposed to earn money, it's too damn hard without buffs/armor/ticket?

I don't understand this. Why has the type of playerbase changed so much in this game? Is it the new focus on Jedi? The 14 days trial bringing lots of bored people into SWG to kill time?

So, finally, here are my random tips for newbies:

-whatever you want to do, first do the helper droid quests. They give you money, xp, useful stuff and some basic ideas about how the game works. Also do the game tutorial at least once, you can do it again by creating a char on another server.

-your starter weapon is pretty bad, in fact you wont find a worse one. Go to the bazaar and look for a new one. Watch for the condition, don't take anything which has too low condition (below 50%, like 50/1067 or something) Also look if you can actually use it, you will need a certification for it! You can see your certs in your skill window (ctrl-s) Don't buy the first one you find, compare prices, lots of people try to rip off newbies.

-if you don't fight, do survey missions, they give lots of money for someone starting out.

-optimize your head up display: you can change lots of stuff in the options. You can ignore all afk people (note that you ignore yourself when you are afk then.) You can activate the waypoint monitor and disable the waypoint arrows in the center of the screen. You can drag and drop the chat tabs to create more chat windows. You can expand your toolbar by dragging it down to 24 slots.

-customize your keyboard: You can remap all keys, even make macros and map them to keys. For example I have the 6 toolbars on the num pad numbers 1-6 and stand/kneel/prone on the left and right windows keys and the properties key.

-always read the Tuesday tips, also read old ones. They have lots of useful random stuff. You can find all of them on swg.stratics.com or in this forum by clicking on the links that thread to the old ones.

-don't go overt if you are not prepared. PvP is endgame, you will get killed probably, so only go overt if you don't care.

-insure your items. If you die uninsured, lots of stuff will decay. 5% if uninsured, 1% if insured. 0% if you die by someone of the enemy faction, player or NPC

-rebel=rebel, imperial=you are in the imperial army, neutral=you are an imperial citizen

-do the theme parks, they are not too hard and can be fun. There are quite a lot mini theme parks too and some 'epic quests' spanning multiple planets. Ask around for that stuff, but bring at least some basic combat skills.

-when you choose an entertainer or medic, you have to rely on other people to tip you. Don't be rude, noone is forced to give you money. Either live with the fact that only 1 out of 5 people tip you or make your money with survey/combat. Do not spam to remember to tip the entertainer/medics. That's just stupid, I tip always, but not people who do that.

-the next thing you will want is a mount or a vehicle. Vehicle have to be repaired all the time for quite some money, but are way faster than mounts, so everyone uses them. You got to decide yourself what to use.

-take all the 6 starter professions. No matter what you want do, take them ALL. You can always surrender everything and Novice in a starter profession only costs 100 creds. It's worth it, you will learn more about how the game works and are more independent. For example, you can heal your own battle fatigue and mind wounds when you dont find an entertainer.

-get better equipment (read: player made equipment) You can find player vendors by using the world map (ctrl-v) expand vendors, click on the type you are looking for. You will lots of green dots. Right click and save the ones you want to visit. Now activate them in your data pad (ctrl-d) and your set.

-if you have a question, type /who and ask a guy with a HELPER tag in the list.

have fun

PS: feel free to add whatever you think is missing here

one thing to add:
starter mobs are around starter citys for a reason. level on these, even the vets do when they decide to change proffesions. Dathomir, Yavinv, Endor and Lok shouldn't be visited without at least novice in an elite proffesion, composite armor, and decent weapons. take it slow, don't be in a hurry to do the high end stuff. you'll get there soon enough.

Nice post.

I'll just add somthing

- If possible join a hunt group, not only will you get to interact with other players and possibly get some good advice of of them, the money and xp is great for new players. Look out for people shouting outside the mission terminals in Bestine, Coronet or some other major city and ask them for and invite. When I first started out I made Master marksman just by going on hunts.

I agree with your story.  Back when I started (I wanted to be a swordsman and ranger) I would throw up a camp after fighting and sit there to get xp and heal.  Random people would just stop by and we would talk and discuss whatever.  Those were the good old days.

My tip:

Be kind and curtious to other people.  Don't be pushy and demand everything.  Being nice helps give you a better chance that a person will acutally help you.  By doing so, you can make friends in no time.  And if you continue the new friendship, they will be more willing to help you out when you need, i.e. gaining xp or loaning you some money.

All good ideas so far, especially the newbie critters around newbie cities part. Most people just don't know that.

To add a little something to that, consider newbie cities all the places with a starport(not shuttleport) on Tatooine, Corellia, Naboo, Rori and Talus. Although the last two are somewhat tougher.

Oh and please ignore my spelling errors, I was at work lol

I'll second that.

I can't stress enough how much grouping helps in the early stages of the game. You get more money, XP comes easier, and above all else, it's far more fun to actually play with other people.

This is a great post, I used to wear a helper tag until ppl begging me for money got out of hand, I gave one n00b 50k, they went and bought clothes then sent me a tell asking for more! That was the last time I gave creds out!

I may not be an oldtimer like all y'all, started in january, but when I started I scraped enough for my first decent gun (a dlt20a) together with delivery missions, then scraped enough together for my first decent set of armour together by doing solo destroy missions, then scraped together all my later weapons together by going on rancor missions and standing WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back lol.

It's not that hard to get started in this game, and someone giving you a few credits probably won't help since you won't know how to properly use them! Frankly the best way to help n00bs (and this is what I do now) is when you are on the bazaar and see a half decent low-level weapon, buy it for the 6k and give it to a n00b next time they beg for money, hand them the gun/knife/whatever and tell them to go earn it!

Once again, great post! Good luck to all n00bs reading this!

Don't think this one is listed, I used it a lot when I started and with the advent of rental bikes it is easy to do now :

- Get your speeder rental, then do 'recon' missions.  These are similar to delivery missions but pay x thousand credits usually and only involve riding between the two spots with relatively no danger (sometimes there is agro at the destination but rarely).  After several you have enough money to buy a 'real' bike, you can then do some more .  The other nice thing to do is pick missions in the direction of POI's, then you can visit nice views on the way to making money.

I remember back when camping was your only option to see any kind of civilization because you were so far away from the closest city. So very far away was that gungan secret place. But I made it!

Camping used to be fun if I remember correctly. I'd always walk up to camps when I saw them and socialize.

I admit that I too, now that I have my bike, just ride by because stopping is too much of an inconvenience and the person camping is probably afk anyways....

As for when I was new, I made my money in the medical center, using what little resources I pulled together from the bazaar etc to heal peoples wounds while I slowly worked my way up medic. Sad times, took me 3 months to get to master doctor that way, and when I got there nobody wanted my buffs because my random factor wasn't high enough for them.... sad.

Awesome tips!

Also, don't overlook delivery missions.  You can get 2 missions to the same destination and make a couple thousand credits on one shuttle ticket.  Just go to a non-player city on the farthest corner of the map and then make sure you check the destination location of the mission and make sure it is the city on the other corner, since the farther across the planet you go the better it pays.  With the shuttle waits only being 5 minutes you can make money pretty quickly with this method.

Some of my pet peeve bugs:
•Armorsmith protection layers were not converted with the CU.
•Ship Details window does not close when you click "Travel" resulting in the message "You have lost the target. Closing interface."

my pointer for the day -

On Tempest during the server's first day, I ran around Anchorhead doing delivery missions. You know the ones for only 60 - 80 credits each. It was a riot!..there was another 50 people there ..most doing the same thing. I got at least 2500 faction point and if I remember about 10,000 credits.

Not sure about it now as the terminals are in the basement..but those first few hours were real fun!

Ya remember in the early days, you would get to your delivery mission waypoint and there were 50 other NPCs from other peoples missions.  It would take me forever to fish through all the NPCs to find mine!  And yes, I didn't realize you could get the NPCs name from the mission details lol.
