Looks like old Smedley has been on the Red Bull's this morning (and then some)

Today's communication has been pretty good. (ok no real jucy new info, but at least they are communicating now). I've 10 credits though, that says this time next week, it's like a ghost town around here again.

All of my accounts are cancelled. I dont play the game anymore (cant stand this Benny Hill combat, and the fact they decimated the crafting professions). But I sure would like the SWG team to give me a reason to re-sub.

Howdy again,

There's a lot of discussion going on and I wanted to jump-in at a more basic level to address the themes I see repeated again and again on this thread:

  • 'Star Warsy' Game: I think this is the principle issue driving all of the furor surrounding SWG. I'll be honest, SWG wasn't launched as a Star Wars game first and foremost. Instead, other priorities such as crafting, vast world space, non-SW activities (e.g. Entertaining) and player-created activities were pushed ahead of the essential SW adventure. The people who wanted an online SW adventure tried it out and left. The people who liked the sandbox nature and deep crafting game stayed. But the general direction of JtL, CU, and the NGE were aimed at adventure. Why? Because we wanted to shift the game to first and foremost be about SW adventure.

Yes. The Entertainer in the movie got eaten.

Note that we're also revamping those features that players find fun but that may not clearly be iconic SW activities. In Publish 28, we start to adapt Entertainers.

Yes of course that wasn't a cantina in Episode IV where they meet up with Han.

That also wasn't Entertainers playing songs and dancing for Jabba in VI.

And they didn't chase a bounty hunter into a cantina(club) with music and dancing in Episode II.(as well as gambling)

And Nooo those weren't entertainers performing for Palpatine while he tells Anakin the story of how he killed his master.

Noooo Entertainers aren't Star Warsy. Cause there was only the one that got eaten. Pfft

At least now we know why we get screwed so often.

Respec NPCs are going with pub 28.  This needs MAJOR Clarification

NPCs will be stationed in some cities that allow you to change your profession for a price.  As a gift for publish 28 everyone gets one respec from the NPCs for free.  The NPCs work essentially the same as the respec devices.

Please define "price"

You mean Credits or exp?

An wbout how much of it?

Starts 100k credits and goes up to 25 million i think.

:cough:

25 million

:choke:

Took me 4 months to come up with 14 million to buy a set of RIS armor on my server...

It wont go from 100k-25 million in a single go. I envision it doubling in price each time, which leaves you with quite a few opportunities to respec before it becomes unbearably expensive. Anyway, a high-yield spend like this will be good for the game, since veteran players can finally recycle the huge amounts of credits they have banked up over the years. This will have a huge economic impact as well that will be interesting to witness.

My thoughts exactly.

Everything seems to be too easy to buy right now, except for a few glowing items (gonna change with the spawn timers) and the "no longer in game" or Mando / Jetpack related items.

It will help decrease the amount of excess cash generated by people not buying items (no decay / no need) and hopefully this will create some favorable economic conditions.

I would like to see Battlefield planets with Enclaves for each combat profession for both sides, with tons of high level NPCs inside and out.  In short, a PVP planet with High-End loot drops, but too risky to sit there and camp...

Oh, and eliminate the Zoning gankage - so You cant be attacked for 5 mins after you zone in (unless you initiate the attack).

Smed i want you to think about this:

When i started to play SWG the toon was me. My toon represented the role i wanted to have in the galaxie it reflected my and how i wanted to play, the game now takes that fealing away. i can no longer be a supporting jedi i ones was i cant heal others i cant spy on my enemies i cant sneak up on my targets. im just like everyone else.

As long as i played thos game i never came across anyone wint the template i had, now im like every one else that is the same profession as i am. The game made us actually live in an other world and create an personallity.

Will the game ever create a fealing of being uniqe agen?

And can we any time in the future get skills that can makes us have longer fights if 2 skilled players meet? the thing now is first hit wins or if you lagg ones u die.

- I support a rollback! I dod NOT buy a FPS game!

I'll agree with you here.  Droids are a key part of the SW fantasy.  But droid engineers are not.  What we should've done was implement droids as a player race and really give players the opportunity to experience them as part of the game.  I know this may be misunderstood so let me be clear:  we're not adding droids as a playable race.  In the grand scope of things, however, it's as you said.  We missed the boat on them.

We're going to keep looking for ways we can build on what we do have in SWG that meets the SW adventure criteria.

a major prob for traders now is loot is better.

in the old days i knew what rifle a new player needed, and what rifle an advanced player needed.  I could stock both.

Now we have CL 88 CDEF rifles.

We don't have any way to construct level specific weapons.

You're right.  The current loot game within SWG is in direct opposition to the trader profession.  That's why we're changing what traders are and how they operate so that they operate in congruence and harmony with the current loot game.  While no concrete plans have been made, I suspect schematics, mass harvesting, factory crafting and similar aspects of the current trading game to be adapted to something more suitable.

No offense, but the current loot game sucks. You should be changing that, not the traders. It's mostly just +20 modified clothing and glowy items, all of which are common, some very common. There's no thrill or adventure in going out and trying to loot stuff anymore. Weapon enhancements, armor enhancements, CAs/AAs, good looted weapons all made for a great looted item system, and it tended to include crafters. Many off the common activities/places people used to go for loot are empty. Who hunts Nightsisters anymore? The Geo Caves which one once filled with people almost 24/7 is empty... not hard to figure out why. Who wants to kill the Acklay and loot an organ? Or kill a crazed Geo and loot more stims... Had it not been for pearls, I'm sure the Krayt Graveyard would be empty as well.

Most of the loot isn't rewarding, and the rewarding stuff is mostly easy to get. What's more, there is no challenge in the getting the best weapon possible. It's no coincidence players complain of the lack of things to do with the loot system that we have now.

You are also correct. The loot really isn't where it needs to be. It needs to be exciting when you get a new weapon or piece of armor. I love it when I get an equipment upgrade, even if it is just a couple of points. But I think the problem that crafters have is the exact same issue that loot in general has right now. Items just are not important enough in SWG. That is something that we need to change, for both crafters and for loot in general.

SpaceRancor

Exactly! Fixing that of course is much easier said then done (I'm sure I don't need to tell you that lol). A large problem with weapons for example is they have no where near the number of stats that they had in the past, so the diversity and uniqueness of weapons we had in the past no longer exists. Combine that with the stats not being as important anymore, and the importance of weapons is largely reduced. (This is something I believe is getting worked on)

As far as suggestion go as how to improve the importance of items, I had written a long post addressing this a couple weeks ago which can be found here: Suggestions for Improving the Crafting/Gameplay System These aren't necessarily the best ideas, but figured it wouldn't hurt to post my ideas. Hopefully they'll be taken into consideration.

Secondly, I want to let you know that I like a lot of the upcoming changes. I'm glad you are learning to better listen to your customers. While in-game content will improve our mood, one of the improvements you should be making is to your customer service group. Many of them do not know the game they are working for, and players are generally forced into finding other methods of help.

What do you think should be done to improve the balance of items for munitions crafters? Most of the other types have the ability to gain customers. I think Munitions is currently in a hard place.

Finally, what is your favorite aspect of the NGE and why?

That is EXACTLY how it is done in WoW. No wonder your detractors keep saying you are copying WoW instead of doing your own game.

guess where they got it from? EQ

Smed

Indeed... at the end of the day WoW just took the best bits from all the current MMORPGS out there and bolted them together (with a couple of new features too)... however, I still don't think that MMORPGS have advanced that much from Ultima Online (apart from Graphics of course)... most of them are still about grinding in some way to raise your skills. This is why I enjoy playing EVE Online, because the skills are trained in realtime (while you are offline too!).

Out of interest Smed, have you ever had contact with Richard "Lord British" Garriot?

heck yes I've had contact with Richard. In fact, it was Ultima 1 that got me into this business in the first place. I learned programming by *cough* modifying the game. I got the chance to meet him many years ago and had dinner with him up in Austin. Very, very nice guy and incredibly smart.

Hi got a few questions

1)     Is there any chance that Jedi ever will be a profession that u'll need to work to get like it was pre-nge?

2)     Are we ever gonna see a force ranking system again or something similiar? And what about light and dark jedi status? Maybe with the profession specialication...?

3)     Would it be posible to do the 2x or 3x weekly server maintenance on euro-server at a time that would fit euro players? I understand this wouldn't be posible with publishes         and hotfixes

Best regards
