1) No target lock is planned or being discussed.
2) There will be additional skills for each profession, but not like the system before. I realize this is contriversial but there it is.

man this game is never going to get better.

why can't you do these things?

Why can't we do these things?

1) Target lock - Believe it or not we talked long and hard about this one. If you seriously sit down and think about the nature of the NGE style of combat, it means that people need to be able to use actual skill to hit. If you take that away you need to go back to the more turn based system we had before. It just plain wouldn't work. Now you can make a legitimate argument that we shouldn't use this style of combat. I have no defense against that argument because nearly every other MMO out there uses that style of combat and clearly it works. What we are trying to do here is create a new style of gameplay. Does it work? Well.. for some people it does, and for others it doesn't. That's the truth. For myself, I prefer it to the old combat system which I personally found dull. But that's just my personal opinion. The reality is we've changed to the new system and we're moving forward. It isn't that we can't add target locking.. it's that wer'e not going to because there isn't a way to do it that wouldn't reduce the skill level needed.

2) The more rigid profession system we've switched to just doesn't lend itself to a skill system that's like what we had before.

Smed

Since when is less variety better?  I mean think about what you said.  Yes, I know you can come back and give us a 2 paragraph explanation on why you changed it.  But thinking simply, its never good to give anyone less diversity..........

ok. Here are my top 5. Keep in mind, this doesn't mean this is the order things are being done.. just my personal ones and what I see being big issues with the community.

1. Crafting - I know crafters are pissed.. we're working on a system that I hope will be a good balance between the crafting centric system we had before and the loot drop system we have now. The truth is this needs to be balanced.

2. New quests for the mid-levels - there's not enough of them now. The team is cranking on it.

3. PvP - Not nearly enough of it - I don't like what we've done to faction bases. Personally I think this is a big part of what this game needs to be about. Then again, I'm personally a PvPer so that's a big deal to me.

4. Entertainers - I realize a lot of people don't like the idea of entertainers being in combat. To a lot of people this IS why they went into entertaining in the first place. I like where we're going with it and want to make sure it's balanced properly.

5. Higher end content - There's a lack of really interesting high-end content in the game. A lot of the vets have maxed out and we need to make sure there's still enough to do.

Smed

It's a good list, though I find it a little discouraging that the #1 community issue is the complete lack of diversity in Skill Sets that the NGE brought.  In every post out there, Diversity (lack of) within a professions is always an issue.  This does not mean more professions, it means being different within a professions.

For example.  Every Bounty Hunter is the exact same.  Seems to me you need to add a more indepth level within each professions.  I don't think every player in this game should have access to using pistols, carbines, rifles, and melee.  You should be able to specialize what weapons you use which would give you different specials and sills.

So that you could have Bounty Hunters (or any of the ICON professions execpt Jedi, entertainer, or crafters) that specialoze in Pistols or Carbines or Rifles, or even Melee and/or Creature Handling.  The content you add for the professions would be the same, but the means you use to acheive that content would be different.

See Sig for details.

Fair Point. To me, this IS the #1 issue overall.. but I consider it such an all-encompassing point as to be above everything else.

Uhh...  Well Mr. Smedley, it's fairly obvious what the bottom line is here (and I give you kudos for setting your opinion, and holding to it).  It seems the talking point for yourself and SOE is "this is our direction, and you have the choice to accept it, or not".  I like it when I'm given clear indications.  The NGE will stay, a rollback is not an option, bringing back turn style combat is not an option, and bringing back skills instead of profs is also not an option.  And as nobody from your end will commit to a Pub Plan with any kind of timeline, even a rough and vague one, I'm left with 2 options:

Either I accept the way the game will be proceeding, or I don't.  I never thought I'd hit that cancel button, but until changes come that make SWG my home again, I guess this is "so long".  I'll miss this game for sure.

Good luck in future endeavours Mr. Smedley, I wish you well.

Obviously your best isn't good enough.

In a quest based MMO how do you level up when there isn't enough quest xp to go around, and when players level up by doing the repeatable quests that were added to BE repeatable, they get labeled as exploiters?

Improving our communication is going to be a critical part of achieving this goal.  We recognize that our success is determined in large part by our ability to listen to players, ask for feedback, initiate research and stay true to the brand. We want your continued support.  Your input is critical to our process and we will continue to bounce ideas off the community, put new content on our Test Centers and probe for your ideas.  Together we can take this game to the next level of excitement.

This year, our commitment to you is to bring back the spirit of Star Wars with more focus on the “wars”, the characters, the adventures, and battles that hearken back to the movie adventures.  We have a lot of fun planned, a lot of quality improvement, and a lot of bug fixing – so get ready for an exciting year that will remind you of why you love SWG

We are almost thru the first quarter, and outside of 1 week the communication has actually been much much much worse then 2005 and there has been not even the slightest hint of the spirit of Star Wars returning.

I'm going to call you out on this - I'm going to say you are flat out incorrect on this. Our communication has been terrific. I can't say you neccessarily like what we've been saying, but I think our community people and our devs have been much more active than before. I never liked that system of correspondents before (they did a great job..don't get me wrong) but I prefer direct communication.

Smed

Hey Smed, not to burt your bubble on this one, yes communication was great, for a while. But now its going back to the way it was, we get a dev to post about once a week now and the rest of the limited info comes from TH who has to get everything he says approved. Every dev should post about once day and not the one dev posting once a week.

There are going to be some weeks with more and some with less communication. We have a lot of stuff going on during any given week... including meetings up at LucasArts.. etc. Overall my point is still on target.

Look, all your answer's seem the same. What i want to know is, u guys seem to only be interested in giving us what u think is right for the game not what we actually want. U know the majority doesn't like the fps style of gameplay, but u say u won't change it, most want a skill system put back into the game, most want the old animations put back. Those are just a few things i think that, if u would reimplement back into the game-paly u would see your subs start to rise once again. U have to give us some gamplay that will resemble the old style first, if u ever are going to win back the confidence of the vet players.THAT'S THE PLAN TRUTH IN A NUTSHELL

Forced?  You are a bit more empowered than that.  No one can FORCE you to play a game.  This is not a job, its entertainment, great entertainment at  that.  It is not Forced entertainment, so just understand that you have the option of finding another source of entertainment.

I quoted someone there, but they did force a "different version" that in almost all aspects was a totally different game. Not to mention they wouldn't refund people who prepaid.

John,

I think one of the main things that are keeping most of the vets in this game from quitting is because we truely WANT to love this game again.   We all have so many fond memories of things we've done in this game and people we've met.  We had tools to create these memories before, but unfortunately those tools are all but gone now.  SWG had so much to offer, things that no other MMORPG offered.  The things that made this game so incredibly unique were stripped away, and for many, it now just feels like an empty shell.

It is in the hope of things turning around for the better again and getting those origional feelings back that I think many are still around.  However, It is only a matter of time before all hope is lost for those few left.

I like your Top 5 list.  However something that has been said before that really needs to be added back to the game is diversity.  I really don't think certain "ability enhancements" will cut it to be honest.

But I digress, we all want to love this game again.  I will continue to play this game until the bitter end.  Not because I like the NGE (Which I don't if that wasn't apparent), but because I have faith in things turning around.

P.S.  Listen to your community.  Contrary to popular belief, we are not all a bunch of morons   We know what we like, and we are telling you what that is.

It's not as simple as "you should have just fixed the things we were complaining about". That doesn't address the very real fact that what we had was a hardcore game that wasn't going to attract the mass audience that the Star Wars IP brings to the table.

this in fact is very true, but just because your hardcore doesnt mean you can attract the masses. ffxi does it very well. and you know why, cause they actually take the time to put in quality systems into the game instead of half arsed systems. just look at the bounty hunter system smed. your devs are adding a bounty hunter system that is totally exploitable. why do i feel its exploitable, because as soon as a person gets killed there will be a ton of bh's bounty checking whoever killed that person and kiling him quick cause they only have ten minutes. thats not very enjoyable fo those who are in the middle of pvp. oh and dont let me forget the fact that your introducing a bounty hunter system based on the gcw pvp system that you havent even fixed yet. now smed im not trying to get in you train of thought, but dont you think that if you goiung top make a bh system based off of the gcw, then the gcw should be fixed first so that people can enjoy pvp and be ok about bh's coming to kill them immediatly while in battle. i mean you guys just arent making sense with that.

the same thing with crafting and the same thing with gaining xp. you guys are fixing things in the wrong order and thats why were are pissed now.

Allow me to respectfully disagree with your point here - Star Wars as an IP is every bit as capable of delivering a WoW level audience. The reason it isn't is the game needs to be that good. No, not the SAME game.. but it needs to be that good and polished. Everyone thinks we are trying to make SWG like WoW or EQ2. That's completely not the case. Yes, we're going to a more rigid class based system and are doing more linear content.. but that's where the similarities end IMO. In theory we still have an incredibly deep and rich system based MMO that can deliver some world class gameplay once we live up to your expectations.
