I. Before you Join
Be human or zabrak if you want the best Faction Point "bang for your buck" - the other races incur x2 and x3 penalties for perk costs (see Section IV, below).
You must first earn - and then keep - a minimum of 200 Imperial Faction Points before you can join. All Faction Points over 200 are what you can spend on buying perks (Sec. IV).
To track your Faction Points, hit "CONTROL C" to bring up your character sheet, or click on the character sheet icon in the lower right-hand corner of the HUD.
II. Where & How to Join
In Bestine on Tatooine, inside the hill fort at coordinates -1136, -3897. There is a perks officer dressed in an imperial officer's uniform and an Imperial Mission Terminal.
Converse with the officer. He will give you the option to join.
Then, you can select whether or not you want to be covert or overt.
Covert: You appear as neutral to other neutral and rebel players. You cannot be attacked unless you A.) Heal an overt imperial; B.) Group with an overt imperial and then fire at an enemy rebel player who is attacking the overt you're grouped with; C.) Attack a rebel NPC. (This is called earning a "temporary enemy flag"/TEF, and lasts an hour of GAME-TIME - you can't log off for an hour and hope it wears off when you log back on.)
Overt: You can attack overt rebels and be attacked by them, and you can also attack covert rebels who gain a TEF.
III - Doing Imperial Missions
Neutrals, coverts, and overts can all access the Imperial Mission Terminal. Unlike regular mission terminals which reward money, jobs from Imperial Mission Terminals reward you both money AND faction points.
There are numerous imperial mission terminals, but as of now, I only know three that work. The one in the imperial fort in Bestine (coords. above), and two in Theed on Naboo, one on either side of the stairs going into the royal palace at the center of the city (use "CNTRL M" to bring up the city map to locate the palace).
There are two types of missions: delivery, and destroy. Delivery missions are non-combative in nature, requiring you to run errands for the Empire. You first go meet an NPC at a waypoint in the city you accepted the delivery mission from, then you are given a new waypoint where the actual delivery is to be made (usually in a different city on the same planet, but not always to a city that you can take a shuttle to). Be careful that your shuttle costs don't exceed the reward or else you'll be working on your own dime! FP reward: 2-12.
The second type of mission is the destroy mission (click on the upper left-hand corner button to switch the screen to destroy missions - the default shown is always delivery types). Destroy missions require you to go to a lair or "garbage" and destroy it, and most of the time there will be monsters or NPCs defending the lair/garbage. Garbage is actually technological edifices that resemble generators, antennas, etc. Garbage is the "lair" for NPCs.
Neutral Destroy Missions: usually revolve around destroying monster/animal lairs or low-level NPC thugs and criminals. Average FP Reward: 5 (this might have changed since the last patch).
Covert Destroy Missions: these are all exclusively NPC garbage destroy missions. The NPCs can range from easy thug-types to dangerous outlaws to insanely powerful Dark Jedi Masters. Average FP Reward: 25.
Overt Destroy Missions: these are all against NPC rebels. Rebel NPCs vary in toughness, but they are generally more dangerous than most NPCs. Spec Force, Commandos, and ranked NPCs ranging from Private up to General can give you a really hard time if you're not careful. HOWEVER, for every rebel NPC you kill, you earn Faction Points, anywhere from 6-12! You also take a negative faction hit to your rebel Faction point total, anywhere from -12 to -24. If you hit -200 FPs with rebels, they will attack you on-sight. Average FP Rewards: 25 (this might have changed since last patch).
BIG FPs: take missions from imperial NPCs when possible, because the FP rewards for completing one of their missions ranges from 60-70 FPs.
IV. Perks
Faction Points can only be spent for perks by coverts and overts.
You must talk to the imperial perks officer in Bestine (coords. above) to get the perks menu.
Training (coverts & overts): You can trade in FPs for XPs toward ANY skill in the game. Humans and Zabraks trade their FPs for XPs on a 1-to-1 basis; 10 FPs get you 10 XPs. Other species get less XPs for FPs. Bothans, Rodians, Trandoshans, and Twi'Leks spend 2 FPs to get 1 XP. Mon Calamari and Wookiees get 1 XP for every 3 FPs spent.
Weapons & Armor (coverts and overts): currently, the available weapons (a Power5 pistol and E-11 rifle) are less effective than weapons you can buy at the beta-only tool dispensers. However, you can currently buy a rocket launcher. Again, costs of perks are doubled and/or tripled if you aren't human or zabrak.
Furniture (coverts and overts): you can buy furnishings for your home, and for pretty cheap too.
Schematics (coverts and overts): you can buy droid schematics. You probably need to be a droid engineer to use the schematics, though. You can have yourself anyone of a variety of droids. What use are droids? I'm sure they do something...but there is one droid that costs a lot more than the other schematics...a combat droid, perhaps? The manual needs to be updated on droid engineering and droid pets for us to know for sure.
Faction Orders - Shuttle Extraction (coverts and overts): this perk allows you to call a shuttle at any time that warps you back to the location you bought the perk (currently, the perks officer in the Bestine hill fort).
Personnel Support (overts only): a long menu of a variety of imperial NPCs are there to serve you, anything from imperial gunners to dark troopers. You control NPCs the same way an creature tamer controls pets. BASICS: Click on the NPC, select "train" from the radial menu, then "movement commands", then select "follow". The NPC will ask you what the command is for that, and you type "follow" and hit enter. The NPC will follow you and automatically attack anyone who attacks you or it. You just bought your own personal bodyguard. Refer to the link on pets above to learn how to train it in other commands and what they do. NOTE: before beta3, the movement commands option wasn't working on the NPC training radial menu.
Pets do not log off when you do!!! Also, right now, you are limited to one pet at a time, so if you want to get a new pet you must first dismiss the old pet.
Coming Soon: turrets, enemy covert detectors, armor, and uniforms. Some of these will be overt-only perks.
V. PvP (Player vs. Player Combat)
The Radar: neutrals (and rebel coverts) appear as light blue dots on your radar. Fellow imperials, both overts and coverts, appear as purple dots. If you are covert, rebel overts (the guys you can kill and can kill you) appear as red dots, just like most attackable NPCs and MOBs (animals/monsters) do.
Identifying Enemies: rebel coverts will look just like neutrals to you. Rebel overts will have the rebel tulip symbol next to their name. Those that can attack you (all overts and grouped, hostile coverts to overt imperials, overts when you have a TEF to covert imperials) have their name and tulip appear as red.
Identifying Friends: all imperials, both overts and coverts, have their names appear as purple and have the evil snowflake imperial symbol next to their names. You cannot tell who is overt and who is covert, so ask before you heal an imp what his status is if you're wary about getting a TEF.
"I'm covert, an imperial overt is under fire from rebel players, how can I help ASAP?" Click on the imperial until the radial menu pops up (and stops BLINKING!), then select "invite to group". The overt can then quickly toggle by hitting "ALT" and then selecting "yes" on the pop-up window that indicates you're inviting him to a group. Once you see his stat bars pop up below your own HAM, move your mouse over a rebel who's attacking him - you'll see a red "X" - OPEN FIRE!!! Remember though, you're now attackable not just now, but for an hour afterward.
Death-Blowing Enemies: once a rebel scum drops like a sack of rocks, walk onto his avatar, click on it, and select "death blow" from the radial menu. You will gain 8-12 FPs for ridding the galaxy of another terrorist.
Getting Death-Blown: if a rebel incaps you and then kills you, not only are you dead and have to wait to clone, you will lose 16-24 FPs for failing The Emperor. You can choose to rush back and get revenge (and loot your corpse if you have to), but I'd recommend waiting for reinforcements or going on an NPC destroy mission to get those FPs back...after you heal up, of course.
Tools of the Trade: the best weapons for PvP and PvE are in the rifle class: T-21; carbine class: laser carbine or DXR6 carbine; pistol class: DX-2 pistol or DL-44; melee weapons: either type of vibro axe. Those are my preferences, but feel free to have a brain of your own. If it's okay with the Emperor, that is.
