  • Teras Kasi - Guide to the Profession

So you have decided you want to be a Teras Kasi eh? Think fighting unarmed would be super cool? Envision yourself as a Star Wars version of Donnie Yen, Jet Li, or Michelle Yeoh? Great, then welcome to a wonderful profession! However I must warn you of several things:

    1) It is not an easy profession to play
    2) There will be times when you will want to quit
    3) There will be MANY times you will want to complain and whine

Still interested? Great then let me help you along the way. I found other Teras Kasi guides useful, but didnt contain nearly enough useful information as they did fluff. So it is my goal to give Teras Kasi hopefuls a good idea of what to expect and some hints that have helped me out in this profession.

    Starting Off:

    TIP#1-Credits are your friend.
Pick a Brawler class and get to work fighting those little creatures outside of the city. Run missions as much as you can to build up enough credits to train SCOUT and MEDIC.

Scout will let you harvest organics from the creatures you will be fighting and gain Terrain Navigation to help you move through the wilderness. The reason you will want those Organics is primarily to trade or sell on the Bazaar because you will not be getting many credits from running your missions. Scouting Experience is the most passive experience out there, and lets you make use of all of your opponents body.

Medic will provide with the indispensable ability to heal yourself in combat, something that can save your life whether at the beginning or end of your career. All you need is organics (alternate reason for Scout) and then non-organics like petrochem and water (which you will have to trade for or purchase). This will also be useful when in groups and in the Medical Center so you can heal your own wounds and not wait for others (However you do NOT get experience for healing yourself, only others).

Make sure you are not tempted to use a weapon!!! You want Unarmed Experience, and even if you use a few shots you are taking away from possible Unarmed Experience.

So Now You Have Some CreditsWHAT TO BUY???:

    Tip#2-Armor is your friend

You will be a Brawler for awhile, so you wont be spending money on weaponsyet. What you WILL be spending money on is Armor. DO NOT BUY BONE!!! Its defense vs. Kinetic nil. You want a GOOD suit of Mabari Armorweave from a GOOD Armorsmith. It should cost you anywhere from 5-8K in Credits. But it is well worth it. It will cut damage taken in melee by over 50%.

If you dont know a good Armorsmith (I.E. havent seen one around town) go to the Bazaar and look for Mabari there in your area. Then send a mail to the creator and see what is the best that they can make and what they will charge for a full suit.

Be prepared to go through a suit of Mabari almost 1/week in the early stages. So keep the Credits saved, you will need them later.

After you have some more you will want to upgrade the armor to Chitin which has even better Kinetic defense. However a suit costs around 20K in credits.

You may be asking yourself, Why is Kinetic so important? Well the answer is simple. Teras Kasi are melee fighters and we force other NPCs and creatures to fight melee. Blaster defense doesnt matter too much if no one is able to shoot at you.

PhewMaster Unarmed. *Sigh* I Still Have a Long Way to Go

Tip#3-Anything that is worth doing is not easy.

By now you should probably have a decent amount of credits sitting in the bank, some decent armor, and if you are fortunate possibly a house. Congratulations! But there is still a lot of work to do!

The only advise here is to stay on task and keep trucking along. You will probably see other people doing a LOT more damage than you. Do not be discouraged because in time you will put them all to shame. But you must first practice patience. Keep fighting until you get that 125K Unarmed Experience for TK Novice.

If you have some tougher friends see about taking off-planet trips to Dantooine to fight Huurtons. You can pull off a lot of quick experience (and some nice Hides) in a short amount of time. And if you have really nice and patient friends, they might even let you destroy the lair to get all the experience from that!

    Special Moves:

    Tip#4-Special Moves are your friend!

In short battles do not worry with special moves too much. In long battles it pays to Unarmed Stun. When being attacked by a group of weaklings Unarmed Spin is VERY useful (I have taken out a group of 5 Swoopers with a Spin). Now is the time to be frivolous with your special moves. ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS!

Teras Kasi Novice, AKA: A Much Deserved Damage Boost:

    Tip#5-VibroKnuckles are your friend!

You are officially a Teras Kasi Novice. Welcome to the fold! Now the real fun begins. Hopefully by now you have saved a decent amount of credits and know a GOOD Weaponsmith and a GOOD Smuggler. This is because your first order of business is to buy a pair of VibroKnuckles.

My first pair cost me 3K, my second 9K, and my current pair cost me 16K (Just to give you an idea). To start off with the small 20-115 Damage/2.5 Speed is fine (bear in mind that damage is in addition to your Unarmed damage). My current set is 40-160 Damage/2.2 Speed.

Now it is time to find a Smuggler who has obtained the title of Slicer or Master Smuggler. What they can do is increase your weapons damage by 10-30%. Not too shabby at all if you ask me. Generally they charge 1-3K.

    Special Moves (Revisited):

Tip#6-VibroKnuckles and Special Moves do not pay well together!

The drawback of Vibroknuckles is that they increase the Health/Action/Mind (HAM) cost of the special moves you perform. Initially you will do more damage with the move, but since the moves are primarily used for inflicting negative States on the enemy, the HAM cost doesnt make sense to me.

Solution-Drag your knuckles to the quick tab bar so you can unequip them before using the movement, and then reequip them directly after. This is much more efficient than opening your inventory, clicking unequip, clicking the action button, then clicking equip, and then closing the window. With the quick tab it is serious as easy as CLICK CLICK BOOM!!!

Another concern is Unarmed Lunge. With your knuckles the range is reduced, but without them the range is increased. This is another reason to have that knuckle quicktab.

    Advancing in Teras Kasi:

Tip#7-Be an individual, but be smart.

There are a lot of things you can do and I dont want to tell you must progress in a particular way. However I CAN tell you what is useful.

The first skill you should learn, without a doubt, is Intermediate Balance Conditioning. This will give you Knockdown, a maneuver that will throw the opponent to the ground and stun them for several seconds thereafter. It is EXTREMELY useful when fighting the big creatures, however if you forget to unequip your knucklesyou will be paying a lot of HAM!!! OUCH!!!
*Note* The Developers are constantly playing and modifying timers and costs on Knockdown maneuvers. Be sure to keep track and adjust accordingly. Currently there is a delay of 30 seconds between times you can attempt to knockdown, but it is being patched to a 5 second timer.

From here I chose to Advance completely through the ranks of Power Technique. That column will increase your Attack Damage and Speed tremendously. Plus you get a couple of EXCELLENT special moves.

Precision Striking will advance itself. It relies on Combat Experience points. Dont be intimidated by the numbers, you will have the whole column mastered by the time you are ready for Teras Kasi Master. Just take them as they become available. The special moves they give are not very useful PvE (they dont inflict much damage), but the passive attributes you gain are VERY useful.

The Meditation column is tricky. Believe it or not this is a VERY useful line as well, but you will be fooled if you dont Master it. The line is pretty much worthless until you hit Master, but once you do you will be able to heal your wounds (everything except Battle Fatigue) EXTREMELY fast and without a Medic. What that means is you will never have to visit the Med Center as a patient, and will only have to stop at the Cantina every few days.
*Note*Powerboost is a broken skill as of the writing of this. However, it is being patched to work correctly. This, of course, means that it ill undoubtedly change a lot before being finalized. The idea is this: Take from the Mind and give to the Health and Action for a short period of time.

    What Else?:

Tip#8-Love what you do and do what you love!

So you are a Teras Kasi Master right? That means you have 158 Skill points to play around with. What else do you want to be? You can be pretty much anything with that much to spare. Pick something that you will enjoy though. Nothing is worse than playing something you HATE.

Personally I have tried as many professions as I can to see what I like. Doctor, Bio Engineer, Creature Handler, Weaponsmith, ectCurrently I am enjoying the devious route of the Smuggler. Smuggler lets me help out my Guild, while at the same time being a solid hybrid class to balance with Teras Kasi.

But the key is to find something you enjoy doing and then do it. If you end up not liking it (like I didnt like Bio-Engineer) then quit out. Even if you pick up another combat class and like it better, dont be afraid to quit out of Teras Kasi. Better you are happy than not (Just bear in mind the Grass is Greener complex).

    PvP:

    Tip#9-Strategy!

Gain personal experience first by playing with friends of different professions. Remember though, your game is thisUp close and personal. A Marksmans game is thisReach out and touch some one. You cant play their game. You will always lose if you start a good distance away on a wide, flat, open space. Make them play your game. Choose tight spaces with cover as a battlefield. Remember Unarmed Lunge and Knockdown. Stick to them like glue!

Currently 90% of my PvP encounters have involved Bounty Hunters that Spam Eyeshot. Bear that in mind.

After every encounter, win or lose, take a few minutes and scroll through the combat messages and see how the fight transpired. Were you outclassed or outfought? Did you really smack someone around or did you catch them off guard? You have to analyze, learn, and adapt to grow.

I like to Anti-Grief, as in find those Overt Imperials outside of Rebel Mission Terminals who think they have easy kills and try to show them up. I do not win all the time, but I have chalked up enough victories to know TK is not useless in PvP (as some would argue).

    Closing:

    Tip#10-Dont WHINE!!!!

This is a profession that can take out Yellow/Red cons with minor difficulty because of a simple fact. WE ARE DEVESTATING IN MELEE!!! Take that away and we are useless. The Developers stated that the Teras Kasi are not meant to be able to take out Marksmen and play the range game, we are meant to be a whirlwind of crippling force if we are in range though. So PLEASE do not whine about how Teras Kasi sucks because Riflemen can snipe you at a distance. That is their game, not yours.

We can dish out ridiculous amounts of damage over a very short period of time as long as we are in range. And that is the way it is meant to be. Do not whine about future Nerfs either. I hate that.

    Tip #11-HAVE FUN!!!!

I say personally in getting TK is to get your buffs...get some brandy and go to Dant or Yavin go to missions until you run out of your buffs...you will make enough money to get another buff and alot of experience. The reason why I say this is because it is a proven fact that you can actually get TK in three days or less...depending on how long you play a day

      Hunter/Gatherer/TKA.

Artisan 0004, survey and place harvesters
      Brawler 4000, Master TKA
      Medic 2130, combat self healing
      Scout 4041, Creature Handler 4414

You can survey, harvest, kill effeciently, tame pets to sell and train as mounts.

If you wanted to focus on Hunting, drops Artisan and reduces Medic, adding Ranger tracking.

      Brawler 4000, Master TKA
      Medic 0000, (basic healing only)
Master Scout, Ranger 0030, CH 4404

These would both good money making templates for starting out.

Not if you want to master both.

BH requires you to master Scout and Marksman.  That's 154 points right there. TKA requires the entire Unarmed tree from Brawler which is another 29 points. Add 6 points each for novice BH and TKA and you are at 195 points.

That only leaves you with 55 points. Mastering either profession at this point requires another 57. You certainly can't go very far with both.

If you are looking for a strong combat type I would recommend Commando/TKA. Commando requires you to master Marksman but only requires the Unarmed tree from Brawler (which you already have from TKA). Thats 77 + 29 for a total of 106 points. Commando and TKA each take 63 to master and so your final total is 232. That leaves you 18 points for something else. (I suggest novice Medic so you can heal yourself; you will have 3 points left over.)

Play around with the character generator elsewhere on the site and see what you can come up with.

      Smuggler 0/0/0/4

The plan is to be able to use the doctor enhance pack plus the power boost and in the craziest fights spices to jump my HAM up to insane levels. My only thought about this is that I like the Idea of being able to put the SP in to Underworld and buy faction. But I think with all those buffs I could solo some of the more higher level mobs.

Yeah in PvP TKA's suck until you get used to it.

I find I'm most effective in large battles as I can "sneak" up on people and KD them then finish them quickly.

We will never be able to compete with BH's, but at least we can buff to take hits and assist or friends.

Ever Profession has it's role, even pikemen (which can actually dish it out to TKA's unlike every other melee profession).

Once you got around 50-60 unarmed speed, I'd get some knucklers sliced for dmg since any decent 2-2.2 speed ones are gunna have you at the cap anyway when doing most of the special moves.

What I havn't seen is a website that gives the different costs and multipliers comparing each of the TK special moves. The SWC Resource center has the range stuff....anyone know of one for TK and other melee guys?

Also, someone mentioned having smuggler....I heard that they were looking at implementing some unarmed moves and passive abililities there...anyone know if that's so?

Once you get into your armour, you'll have MUCH less trouble with eye shot. With a good composite helmet on, the damage it does is no logner enough that the unskilled eyeshot spammers will go down pretty quick.
I don't play a TK, but I've noticed that with my low level comp helmet (32%), I can take an eyeshot a second and still drop he offending BH before I go down.

I agree with the pvp comments, I haven't won a battle yet, marksmen that flee eventually take me down because I can't attack from more than 3m away...  Here are some ideas, but I have not tried them:
      1. Throwing grenades while players are evading
      2. Pulling out my rifle and opening fire (even though I am only novice rifleman)
      3. Using /follow (does this actually work?)
      4. Pulling out a pet (I am novice CH)
      5. Getting extending powerups for my knucklers

I am about halfway to TKM and love it for PvE, but be wary if you are leveling for PvP, it's very hard with TKA..

A funny side note, I harvested hides and sold them from the beginning and ACCIDENTALLY had enough exp to be novice CH. If you use your pet to tank (I have a dewback), you can EASILY take down red cons like Snorbals, which are GREAT exp..

I mastered power first and am working on balance, exp comes MUCH faster after doing power, wonder how it compares to meditate first, for little downtime..

the /follow command does work, but your normally about 5m away, so with no weapon and berserk I could still pund em a little, but most ppl pause to change direction and what have you, that when you can get em, i use the following-
        /unarmedlunge1-takes em to kneeling
        /unarmeddizzy1-you shall see
/unarmedknockdown1-puts em on their back, when they try to get p dizzy hits em

i was only half way through tka when I rerolled so i haven't got too far advanced but that was working then, now I am back on the road to tka

An Idea on the PvP thing is...TKA take VERY little damage in any sort.  I have witnessed a whole lot of TKA do well in PvP, but it can also turn out the exact opposite. A lot of people choose to mix CH with their combat skill, but I dont really see much good come from people with CH. Pets are kinda stupid, if you get a melee pet it will usually take to long and not get to your target before they get you dead, if you get a ranged pet, well ranged animal attacks suck. So what I chose to do was get the best of both worlds. TKA Master and Commando Flame 4 - Heavy Weapons 4, and of coarse you gotta have Medic First Aid 4.

Personally I am doing the following:

      Unarmed Specialist - 29 pts.
      Pistol Specialist - 29 pts.
      Master Smuggler - 63 pts.
      Master TKA - 63 pts.
      Master Pistoleer - 63 pts.

      Total of 247 pts.

Throw in intermediate ranged support for warning shot and you have 249 pts. 3 elite classes and an extremely versatile character.  The only thing I might suggest doing is taking the medic class and becoming a field stabilizer for healing HAM damage. You would still have 37 pts. for pistoleer and be completely self-sufficient.
