  • Creature Handler - A quick guide on finding and taming creatures

The first step is to find good spots, I was lucky, and happened to find one right away. When I've ventured out the last couple times I've gone south of Naboo, looking for white creatures (thier con will depend on your weapon and your skill in wielding it so they may be tougher or easier to you). There are camps of various kinds in abundance near the hills. I like the plainscats, the ape like thingys (whatever their called) and even the occasional Peko Peko. They are all at the limits of what I can tame so they give unbelieveable experience. Just look for the toughest thing you can find that can be tamed.

As I'm running I use tab to cycle through creatures as I approach them. As I target each creature I hit the tilde key (~). This brings up the radial dial. Once the inner circle stops cycling if "Tame" shows up on the dial it's a baby, if not I hit tab and move to the next target. Just keep track of who you've checked and cycle through every creature in the group. Note that if your too far away you'll only be able to target some of the group, those at a greater distance won't be "tab-able" so you need to move in close enough to cycle through all of them. With practice you'll get good at this. I've gotten to where I can mostly run and I can find babies in a large group very quickly. Once I find a baby I keep it targeted at all times so I know where it is.

Once I find a good target, I mask scent from at least 60 meters (I discovered this distance through a few minutes of trial and error), any closer doesn't do any good. Then I move closer and watch the messages to see if anyone notices me. If they do I back off past 60 meters and mask scent again. It may take 5 or 6 tries, maybe even 10 or 15 in a tough group (when you get the experience messages for masc scent you know you've got a group that's going to give great exp), eventually nobody will notice you and it's safe to enter the inner part of the camp.

Once I get up the baby I use ~ to bring up the radial dial as usual and the number keys to select tame. This works even when your on top the baby and the radial dial is in an akward place. Once you start taming, if the baby move you have to follow it, or you'll get too far away and fail. However, beware that moving can bring new targets into range of mask scent. If one of them detects you, your mask scent will fall. This doesn't seem to affect those cretures that are already masked from you, or at least none of them has attacked me yet. Even so, I'm not sure what effect this has on taming, since I have yet to tame a creature with mask scent down. I suspect that when your scent isn't masked you have a much much harder time taming. Even if you do continue to follow, the baby may move far enough to bring you into attack range of whatever noticed you, so be careful where your going as you follow the baby. Once I've been noticed I figure it's safest to back off, mask scent and try again.

I've learned through practice that you can get at most 4 or 5 taming attempts before mask scent will fall and then I could get attacked. So I usualy get in 4 or 5 tries, then back off, re-mask scent, and move in again. This sounds tedios and slow, and it can be, but with care you can tame creatures that give excellent experience. They make better hunting partners and give good enough experience to make up for the time spent taming.

Once you get a success, take note of how much experience that creature gave you. Eventually you'll get to know which ones are the best candidates. Now you've gor a tame creature, but you've still got a problem. If the creature was tough to tame, it's going to be equally tough to teach it the first command, and without teaching it follow it will wander all over the place. So you have a couple choices. If you have time remaining you can try to get in a few training attempts at "follow" before your mask scent falls. If your already pushing it, it may be best to store your pet, back off, make a camp, and then train it. If you do train "follow" then tell it to follow, get it to a safe distance and then continue to train it.

I've been suprised at the number of scouts that don't know how to make a camp. Most do, but for those that don't, if you need to make a camp to train a few creatures, you can do so by using your generic crafting tool. Just open it, and select the camping kit, you'll need two harvested hides and one harvested bone to make the camping kit. Once it's made all you need to do is double click on it to open it and the camp will build around you.

Frequently I find good groups of creatures in clumps so if you find a good area stay there and tame as many as you can before moving on. Even as a novice, you can tame creatutes that are very powerful, just remember to use mask scent, watch to see if any creaures notice you, keep on top of your mask scent while taming, and most of all be careful. If you do this you'll have no trouble taming even the most vicious and unpredictable creatures.

The best way I have found to get CH xp is to use the smallest animal you can (or have)on missions.  In other words, the lower the level of creature you use in a mission, the more XP you will get. For example, lets say that you used a GSP on a certain mission and you recieved 150 pts for every kill the GSP took part in. If you used something like a Direcat instead, you would get more xp for the same kills. If you happen to have something like a Durni, the likelyhood is that your pet is going to be incapped. So use some discretion when you choose the pet your going to use in the fight. It also helps if you are strong in a weapon.
Let your animal attack first so you can stay clear of damage and monitor the fight. If your pet starts to lose, you will be in a position to stim him and join the fray. And, your pet doesn't have to do all the damage to max out ion xp. You can fight too. As an aside, you don't get any points for letting your pet kill a lair, so I would advise not wasting your time.
The drawback using a lower level pet is that you and your animal are more at risk. Make sure that you have macros for stimming yourself and your pet, and that you have stim packs and food available.

Open up your skills window (Ctrl+ S). Look at the left hand side at the window "My Skill Mods", find Max Level of Pets. Whatever number that is is the maximium lvl pet you can call from your datapad or tame from your inventory. You can have someone transfer creatures to you all day long, but as soon as you store the creature, you'll lose the ablity to call it untill you are able to control that level of creature.

I am a relatively new CH ( a week or and a half about ) So I can't give you a true estimate of time.  But watch him through your datapad. click on him and watch the information on the left you will see is HAM information rising over the course of days. The number in paranthesis should be is max and the numbers to the left of that is his current. You should also over the course of days see his physical size get larger. I got a Razor Cat from Corellia my first day as a CH he is now just over half grown. I think the rate may very by creature. Hope this helps

It's Mind but that doesn't seem to be a large factor either.  I've never had to break off a taming or training session because my attributes were too low.

I think we must look at the skill modifiers. This is why Wookies have an advantage as CHs. They have an additional +15 Taming Skill Modifier (the Novice CH starts with +5, Wookie CH is then +20)

Although I've been successful at CH as a Transdosian, I've often felt I might have had an easier time early on if I was a Wookie. Especially after attempting 80+ tamings on a Gronda baby and giving up. Just to watch a wookie come up and eventually get it. We were both new Novice CH. Of course that may just be the luck of the draw, but I felt the wookie had spent half the time I did before getting the pudgy babe.

I think this advantage narrows latter in CH profession when our focus shifts towards Vicious Creatures, which is a different skill modifier.
