    DISCLAIMER: This guide should be accurate as of 15 July 2003. This guide is not super in depth but will give you a quick overview. If you need more information on Surveying, harvesting, or other areas beside engineering/architect I recommend taking a look at some of the great guides on allakhazams.

    If you have decided to take the step and become an architect in SWG I applaud you, the road is not an easy one to say the least. The architect has the highest initial workload (33,000) to obtain the novice level. I am going to describe step by step the best ways (I) have found to get exp points, ore, and make money.

    Step 1 Character Creation: Choose a class that you like to play. Simply put, you will enjoy the game much more if your using the Wookie that you have dreamed about playing ever since you heard the game was coming out instead of the Mon Calmari that has better stats. Once you have decided on a class, you need to do some stat migration. After you create your character you will go through a series of learning steps that will eventually lead you to the planet selection area. Upon entering you will be prompted with a screen that asks if you would like to change some stats. There is a huge debate about how to allocate your stats. I personally recommend putting a very large part of your points into the action categories. You will understand why later in the guide. Many people believe that you should pump up your health to give yourself a better chance in the wilderness (where you will spend lots of time surveying/mining). For the first 10 days I played I didnt get into a singe fight, so its entirely up to you. If you have a tendency to get bored if you dont get to fight occasionally then I suggest you put some points into the health areas. Next you will have the option to choose a planet. Personally I prefer Kor Vel, Corellia. There are some great spots for ore and it isnt TOO dangerous.

    Step 2 Beginning your career: SWG will seem a bit tough for those of you whom have never played an online RPG. I played EQ for quite a while and it still took me quite a bit to get used to the controls. One big advantage is that you can change the interface to mirror that of EQ, a first person shooter, and a few others. When you start out as an artisan you have the advantage of having crafting tools to start your profession. I also recommend training in Scout and Marksman when you start your character. I know I said that I rarely fired a gun to start but eventually I wanted to blast a few critters and inevitably I started gaining quite a bit of exp in Marksman. This will also help later on in earning credits. I recommend the Scout for the fact that you will be able to make camps, harvest bone and hide, and learn to explore with greater ease (run faster up hills).

    Step 3 Surveying: To make anything in SWG you need materials. There is a literal book of information that can be said about material types, quality, and location. First off, open your inventory and select your mineral survey device. Select a metal such as steel, copper, or aluminum, then hit the survey button. On the left side of the box you will see a % listed. I recommend going through all the metals till you find one that is very high and near the city. I used aluminum almost the entire time because it was located relatively close to the city and it had a great concentration level. Once you have positioned yourself over the highest concentration you can sample. You can type /sam to begin sampling. I will discuss a great way for gathering materials while you sleep or AFK in section 9 of this guide. For starting out and getting the feel of things I would recommend getting about 180 or so metal to start. You will always survey until you run out of action points, that is why I recommend having a high action pool so you will be able to sample a very long time before you need to sit and recoup your points. Once you have that you will need to open up your chemical survey kit, if you do not have one simply make one by using your generic crafting kit. Follow the same steps from above and survey for a chemical. Survey/mine until you have around 120 or so chemical (I used Oweke because of the high concentration and proximity to the city). Once you have gathered this much material you will probably qualify for a gain in your surveying skills, simply shout that you need training in Survey I and someone will be more than happy to assist you. The great thing is that you can craft and survey at the same time. If you feel like trying this now then by all means go for it. Simply start mining then switch to your crafting tools.

    Step 4 Harvesters or not?: Personally I was a bit skeptical about harvesters to begin with. It seemed like an entirely large amount of work and money to maintain them. But I now have 5 harvesters going at all times and am very glad I do. The best thing to do is find good metal or chemical spots that are in an area where you can build and also find a VERY close spot where you can put a wind machine. Im not going to go into what is involved in getting harvesters up and running, there are some great guides on Allakhazams that will show you what needs to be done. Basically you can reach Novice architect easily without them, but you will appreciate them if you have them.

    Step 5 Youre first real crafting: Now that you have gathered your materials you will be ready to craft your first items. This is where my guide should really help you. First off, lets get rid of those annoying prompt screens. Under the bottom right hand side you will need to access the options and locate the section that will let you turn off prompts for destroying items and for crafting items, it should save you tons of time. Next off, create 3 generic crafting tools. You want these to be right next to each other for ease of creating items. Start by clicking the first generic crafting tool, you will see a list of categories horizontally. Click the generic items bar and look down till you see weapon power ups. You will be making muzzles. You will hate muzzles, by the time you are through. You will never, ever, ever, want to see a muzzle again lol. The main reason you will be making muzzles is the fact that they give you x4 experience for each resource used instead of the normal x2. Double click on the muzzle section to bring up the material menu. You will then be able to put the materials you have into the slots allocated for them. I made the mistake of thinking you had to drag each one over, actually all you need to do is double click on the ore and it will go into the appropriate place. You will then see a button asking you to combine the materials. Remember exactly where the button is! Hit combine and it will take you to your next menu. In that menu it will show how well the item being produced will be. It will have a button that says something like continue. Line that button up EXACTLY where the button asking for combine is. Next, the window asking for the final creation will come up. There will be one last button that you need to press, line it up EXACTLY where the previous buttons were. This will save you allot of time moving your mouse around. Once you press the final button your crafting tool will begin to make the product and output it to your inventory. Immediately click the next crafting tool and begin the process all over again. By the time you do this with the other two crafting devices you will be able to begin with the first one all over again. You will quickly reach the experience needed to train your engineering. Make sure you train a skill when you get it. Points will only accrue for so long before they cap out and you will be making items for nothing. Simply ask someone to train you and most people will be more than happy to. To reach the Engineering IV you will need to make about 263 muzzles. To reach Novice Architect you will need to make about another 825 muzzles. All together, you will need to gather about 6700 metal and 4500 chemical (allowing for quite a few failures). Unfortunately you will be destroying almost all of the items you make due to the fact you are producing such a mass amount. Occasionally I would venture into town and hand them out to new players which will add to your credibility and also help gain points through people using your items.

    Step 6 To master or not to master Artisan: I wholeheartedly recommend that you master every skill in the Artisan tree. I know this seems like allot of work but you will definitely be grateful that you mastered all the sections. Not only will you be able to make many more items you will not have to ask other players for some of the smaller items that you need to create some of the more advanced structures in the architect tree. You will need to make another 600 or so muzzles to get enough experience to train in all areas of Domestic and Business. If you do decide to master Artisan you will need 620 apprentice points. Simply look for people who need training and train them. You will acquire the points quite rapidly.

    Step 7 Training Novice Architect: Once you have accrued the needed 33,000 exp you will need to find an Architect trainer. Just ask around and you should find one that is near you. You may need to hop on a shuttle to another city. Make sure to bring along 5k to fund the training. The novice levels are the only ones, as far as I know, that players cannot train each other in. Other players can train master artisan, so I assume that goes for the Tier 2 Masters also.

    Step 8 Making money: It is not necessary to make money in the early stages unless you are using harvesters or want to travel a bit. The easy way to make some small amounts of cash is to do In Town missions, they only give around 70c per mission but you should only need a couple to take a one-way trip on your planet. The next easiest would be the delivery, this may take you all over the planet but they usually give around 500-700c per mission. Search and destroy is the hardest of all missions, they give around 1000-1500 per mission. If you take the destroy missions I recommend killing glubs or some of the easier creatures. Also, destroy missions are much easier and more fun if you take someone along. The money is cut in half but so is the time. To get a mission simply locate a terminal and click the type of mission you want. Ask around town and someone will be glad to help you find one. Make sure that you use the generic mission terminal since some terminals are for rebel and imperial faction. If you know that you prefer to be aligned with one of those factions then by all means use them.

    Step 9 Macros: So you hate surveying and mining, dont we all, thats where the macro comes in. The macro will enable you to sample while you sleep or at work. Go to your macro button in the bottom left of your screen and select new. You will then name your macro and give it a button icon. You will need to type the following line to make your macro. ( /sample;/pause 800;/sit;/pause 200;/ ) The macro should look like that, simply keep typing it over and over until you fill your entire macro box. You will need to adjust the numbers to fit your own action pool. I have a very high action pool and action pool regen. This macro should allow you to mine for hours with no worries, just make sure you do not mine in a dangerous area.

    Extra Advice: The above guide was a quick and dirty version of how to achieve Novice Architect. The following are things that I picked up from my own experiences in SWG.

    A. Get a backpack as soon as possible. When you have it equipped it will reduce the weight of the items within it by 100%.
    B. Dont do harvesters until you have decent understanding of the game. They can be a pain to manage and can actually take away from your crafting time.
    C. Dont worry about making the best product in the beginning. Simply churn out muzzles as fast as possible.
    D. Make friends whenever possible. I have built numerous houses and other items for people and given away and traded them off for less than they are worth. Sounds crazy I know but now I have full sets of armor, great weapons, and tons of contacts with whom to trade ideas with. People will remember your generosity and kindness.
    E. I cant stress it enough, build your harvesters and wind machines close to each other. This will save you much time and headache.
    F. Have a good chair and wrist pad. This makes all the clicking much easier on your body and a good chair makes sitting for hours much easier.
    G. Last but certainly not least.HAVE FUN. In the end it is simply a game. Unplug sometimes and go shoot some ball or watch a movie. If youre so addicted that you hate to do thatsimply use your macro and at least you can be mining while your gone lol.

    Hopefully this guide will give you some useful tips and tricks that will help make the pain of getting to Novice architect much easier. Good luck with the carpal tunnel syndrome!

      Guys, If you didnt no its not its not grindin you need to worry about its resources. U need 15k ore to make just one medium house and about 40k resources for a large house. If you wanna grind i suggest you grind the furniture that uses the most resources because it wont eat up all your resources in 15mins + most of the novice architect/furniture I furniture only needs 60 resources to make.

      And on the sampling macro u just need 1 macro not 2 and u dont need the /t self thing its useless
      this is how it should b

      /afk;
      /sample;
      /pause 5;
      /sit;
      /pause 25;
      /stand;
      /pause 2;
      /macro <name of macro>

      that macro works perfectly ive never had ne problems with it just find a corner that you wont move around in and click on the macro then bam 5-10k resources in 1 night depending on the density

      the best way to grind out novice architect and some archie skills is to get a crafting macro and then just kepe on making installations.you get 550 general crafting xp per make. but make sure you have some resources available to you. at least 1000 of steel aluminum and ore. it will take you about 30 minutes if you ahve enough resources. i grinded novice armorsmith in 6 minutes flat with only 7k of steel ore and aluminum lol. if you need my crafting macro send me a mail at Ahazi.xias and i will reply back with the macro and instructions on how to use it.

      Once you are able to make plain robes just grind them out.  Also, to keep from having a bunch of junk in your inventory simply click your generic crafting tool into Practice mode - you will still use up resources and receive just as much experience as you should normally, but more importantly you wont have a butt load of plain robes filling up your inventory. Keep doing plain robes as it gives you a total of about 70 exp points each (20 for the fiberplast panel and 50 for the robe itself). Once you get Engineering III you can start making harvesters. Either make a bunch of them and sell em or just practice them. Roughly 420 points of experience, but requires more resources than you have probably seen previously at this point. I took approximately an hour last night just banging out my last level of engineering and domestic arts, 12,000 General Crafting Exp total, and in that hour timeframe I closed out both of those two branches and now just need some apprenticeship points in order to claim the title of Master Artisan.

      Just my two credits, and what has worked for me. You may know or find something different, or better.

      Ok Ive read just about every post regarding crafting, and here is the ultimate way to go about your endeavor. Read the article above for the holes I have left out, quite deliberately.

      -- First, Sampling --

      A couple points:

      a) You have 20-some-odd seconds of time between each sample; why not utilize this time to rest?

      b) If you make a macro to go afk: If your macro runs you to zero action, then rests you to full and repeats you have a problem. Your wasting the time in-between sampling by doing nothing!

      c) *Heres the kicker* if you get a survey event (those messages that let you focus your device, or retrieve pockets of resources) you stop sampling until you choose an option. If youre afk, that means the rest of your /sample is wasted, until your macro reissues the /sample command.

      The solution:

      Make a macro (actually 2, explained next) that will take one sample, then /sit immediately, until your full again. This allows you to utilize those 20-some-odd seconds between sample allowances for resting. Thus your rest time per sample ends up only being the time it takes you to rest to full BEYOND the sample cool down.

      Heres the macros:
      *macro 1, which goes in your TOP LEFT quick bar slot*

      /t <self> Starting 1;
      /kneel;
      /sample;
      /pause 6;
      /sit;
      /pause 28;
      /t <self> Ending 1;
      /ui action toolbarSlot01;

      *macro 2, which goes in the quick bar slot immediately to the right of macro 1*

      /t <self> Starting 2;
      /afk;
      /kneel;
      /sample;
      /pause 6;
      /sit;
      /pause 28;
      /t <self> Ending 2;
      /ui action toolbarSlot00;

      I use this every night when i go to bed (although server maintinace cuts it short) and every day when i leave for work. I get anywhere from 2000 - 6000 resources while im off doing other things each day.

      NOTE: macro 2 has /afk in it, this prevents the server from timing you out. By periodically toggling your status.
      NOTE: The first pause is just 6 seconds to allow you to get that sample, then move on, this number shouldn't need changing.
      NOTE: the second pause needs to be adjusted to the amount of time it takes you to rest to FULL after 1 survey has been done. (not one full survey cycle, which uses your entire action bar)

      The first one activates the second one, the second one activates the first... its a loop!

      NOTE: To stop the loop simply remove the macros from their spots, by either completely removing them from the quick bar, or by dragging them to another spot.

      Now go find a good concentration of a desired resource, hit get sample on your device (this is a must, as /survey will only repeat your last sampling)

      -- Second, Crafting --
      Unfortunately I have not yet figured out how to automate this, but there are ways to vastly speed this up.

      First the macro, then the explanation.

      *make the following macro, and put it anywhere on your crafting quick bar alongside your various crafting devices*

      /NextCraftingStage;
      /NextCraftingStage;
      /CreatePrototype;
      /NextCraftingStage;
      /StopCrafting;
      /CreatePrototype;

      That out of the way, heres how you power craft:

      Click on a crafting device and open your crafting window.

      Then choose the item to be crafted.

      Double click on the appropriate resources.

      Now, if your crafting window is stacked on top of your quick bar move it out of the way, if not carry on.

      Click on the macro you just made (which should now be on your quick bar) This will complete the crafting stage right from the resource screen! Almost NO waiting!

      Now just click on another craft device while the previous one cranks out the item and repeat the process.

      NOTE: you cannot experiment with this macro
      NOTE: you cannot utilize practice mode with this macro.

      Hope this helps.

The way i see it everytime the char stands up or kneels it moves a little from the spot where it started. Is there a way to fix this?

        Plus even when i had kneel instead of sitting it would keep surveying non stop till it was out of action and mind.

        I did the script the way it was told on this forum.

I intend to test the macro with /stand in place to see if i can get better results. Another thing you can do, provided your in a city or place where there are NPC's that WILL NOT be moving, is add /follow into your macro, and allow for a pause to get your character back to the area this NPC is at. Its a shotty work aournd, but it exists.

          im not sure what your issue regarding surveying until empty is. If your macro has you kneel, then sample, then wait 6 seconds, then sit, you should not ever keep sampling unless your not being commanded to sit.

          Please be sure you have a space after each ; (semi-colan) and a space after every occurance of the following: "pause" "ui" and "action" A mistake I have seen is confusing or accidently mistyping ;'s for :'s. Just be sure you have these fundimental steps:

          stand or kneel

          sample

          wait 6 seconds (to allow for one full successfull sampling)

          sit (this is a must)

          wait X seconds (the number of seconds it takes you to fill your action back to full after one sample, for me its 29 seconds, for my sister it's 40, you will just have to time it.)

          trigger the other macro

          and one macro should have an additional /afk to prevent you from timing out.

          Keep in mind the following:
          SWG servers go down at night, this means if you run this at night, you will wake to see yourself at the login screen, with less then the resources you expected. There is no workaround, but you get what you managed to sample before they went down!

          you will move a little with each /kneel, try to find a wall, rock, or other impassable object to face yourself at.

          This script absoutely works, tried and true for at least 5 people I know personally, if it doesnt work, make sure you have typed it exactly as specified and placed the macros in the correct places.

      Here's a better sampling script.

      /t <self> Starting Cycle.;
      /kneel;
      /sample;
      /pause <time>; (find your optimum length 1=1/10th of a second)
      /t <self> Resting.;
      /sit;
      /pause <time>;
      /ui action toolbarSlot23;

      Place the macro in the F12 slot on the second tier of the first pane of your toolbar.  Once your script finishes, it will automatically start again. To stop it, just move the icon or delete it. If you want to place the icon elsewhere, 0-11 is the first row, 12-23 the second. I don't know if 24-?? works for other panes, but I don't even completely use the first pane as it is now. Make sure you match case, toolbarSlot##...

      The problem is, they updated the system to have your survey device prompt you on special occasions. When this happens, it causes your sampling to stop till you accept or cancel the action prompted (there are 2, one to find a new resource close by, another to spend action to search for a greater concentration of resource on your next sample).

      This was obviously implemented to discourage sampling scripts. I have a program that I use to repeatedly send ESC key presses to cancel these notices as soon as they come up (Game Commander 2). You have to pay for the program, but I had it already, so your on your own to find an alternate utility. Holding down the ESC key won't work. You need something to automatically repeat the keypress if you want to use the script as intended.

      Using this utility will close any dialogue boxes, which gets very annoying if you're actually trying to play, but since you're intent for using a script is to sample continually while AFK, then it shouldn't matter how it works.

          If you call sample while you're sitting resting, it'll just say "can't sample while sitting" and just move on.

      The factory/installation tree.

      Focus on it.  Housing can bring you good money, but after a while, it's almost difficult to get 3/resource for what you are spending on the house. Therefore, it's more lucrative to build harvesters and sell resources.

      The components: Generator Turbines, hundreds and thousands of Structure Components, Wall Modules, etc. bring very good xps. The final combines on installations are worth it as well. After you build a full set of personal extractors, you will probably have enough xps for medium mineral extractors. Then replace those personals with the medium guys and sell the personals off.

      As with other artisan-based professions, look for good quality resources to throw your extractors upon. Link-Steel aluminum, high quality & toughness steel, carbonic ore, fiberplast, and many others will consistently bring you at least 3cr/unit.

      Continue to upgrade your installations and you will cruise right to the top of that column and your money and resource needs will be forever behind you permitting you to focus on the other columns should you so desire.

      Even if you leave architect at some point, having the ability to throw down massive extractors from time to time will keep you in cash henceforth.

      I built a number of structures for folks who brought the shopping list. Most of them gave me a substantial tip, the xp was great, and I did not have to annoy anyone by hawking wares.

Heavy Axes and Reinforced Combat Staffs crank out 82 (or 84) xp, but Wood is somewhat tough to come by, and these need a lot of Wood. I didn't spend much time with trying out the crafting stations, just because I'm a Novice Weaponsmith .. and I'll need all the metal I can get my hands on.

      The best way to do long term sampleing to to create a macro file. Mine looks something like:

      repeated a couple of thousand times. The file is about 98k in length, and must be saved in the Star Wars Galaxies directory (something like \program files\sony\star wars galaxies, I think).

      Before I go to bed or work, I enter:
      /load sample.txt
      /NightSample
      and the macro loads and runs for, well, as long as I've run it. Now, when I want to quit sampling I log off and back on, but that's fine with me. I've got up to 5k of a resource in a single night.

Then once you hit architect you should grind a little making cheap furniture for a bit, untill or Structure modules (which you will need massive amounts of anyway) till you hit medium harvestes. Once you hit medium harvesters you can start making a decent profit off of their sales (20k for a mineral harvesters, 25k for solar, 45k for chemical) I've sold quite a few at these prices and they have kept me very well supplied. Not to mention gaining 10-15k exp per harvester is a great way to earn both xp and money =)

They just want to get to the top to be great. What they don't understand is that large houses take 40,000 resource to make and there isn't anyway they are going to come up with quickly doing a solo route. So don't grind, it serves no purpose and you will just be very, very, very disappointed. If you think this is some kinda of easy money profession than think again. I'd rather have been a master weaponsmith who can sell items at a 15 credits per resource unit base then a architect who has to sell it at 3 credits per resource unit base. Ppl complain about prices all the time because you can't blow crap up or do other "worthwhile" stuff with it. The novices should just stick to selling small houses as its much easier to do than larges. If you can get ppl to lend you lots thats good too. Getting medium harvestors BEFORE Buildings 1 will make your progression through the tree go quicker. Hope this helps.
