(Understanding maps, way points and your radar)
Greetings everyone.
Well I see your lost. And there no shuttle refueling station around to ask questions. Those Jawas and Jabba thieves are no help either. Trust me when I first started out as a Surveyor and Engineer, I was more lost than knowing where I was. I would rather stumble into a city than a Krayt. Hopefully this guide will help you in finding your way quickly, and painlessly. (because theres stuff out there thats very hungry).
So what do you do? Unfold your map and see where your at. Heres some map reading and HUD control basics. Theres a lot of tools you have and each one work with the other, like a well orchestrated team. Lets start with your radar.
By default its on the lower left of your screen. As you turn, the radar display rotates. Wheres North? Along the rim youll see a large solid triangle. Thats North. On the other side is a solid circle, larger than your blips. Thats South. The rectangle on the left side of this is East and the rectangle on the right side of this is West. Along the bottom of this display is your position. The first number is your East / West (West being negative) and the second number is North / South (South being negative). So your at position 1254 / +562. You know exactly where your at, right? Yes, and no.....
Bring up you map and the first thing is youll see a bunch of icons. The icons are the cities, way points, and yourself. Your icon looks similar to an anchor. The arrow end of it is the direction your facing. If your facing north, your arrow is pointing to the top of the map AND the solid triangle on your radar is ALSO at the top. Now you know exactly where your at, right? Sorta .....
The cities are sort of like way points ... in so much that they work the same on location distance. Cities are square looking things where way points are kind like backward arrows. A triangle affair with a tail. The end of the tail is where the city and way point is set. Way points are also in different colors and you can set those colors and descriptions in your Data Pad for future reference.
If you hover your cursor over the icon till the icon "lights up" and move it down to the end of it's tail, and you look at the bottom right of the map it gives you the meter distance and direction in relation to YOUR position. Lets say the nearest city from where your at is 2565m NE.
Ok .... hmmm ... move facing north east, radar pointing between triangle and the left rectangle, my anchor on the map is pointing toward the little tail, time to run. Because you know EXACTLY where your at. Depending on distance it may take a while, and dodging nasty stuff on the way, but youll hit the objective in no time.
What about way points? Way point work in the same fashion except they are set by either you, or the data base IA, (missions for one). Blue way points are personal ones set by you and red ones are for missions in your data pad. You can also change these colors for a different reference if needed. When a waypoint is active ... you will get an arrow on your screen as well as a corresponding arrow on your radar. When you get close to your arrival point, the arrow on the screen in front of you will disappear, and a magic tunnel of light shooting in the sky will come into view. DEAD CENTER of this is your way point objective. You will also notice a small triangle corresponding to your way point color in your radar.
Heres a trick on using all this stuff together. Lets say your in the city of Mos Entha on Tatooine, I dont know, surveying resources. A bunch of friend /tell or mail you that theres to be a raid on the Tusken City in about 3 hours and to meet in Bestine. You agree and its off to Bestine. But wait. Make it worth your while. Do 2 delivery missions.
Ok, how do you know what missions and where they take you? Go to a mission terminal. Open your map. Hover your mouse over the city of Bestine and look at the bottom left of the screen to get the meter distance and direction. (Bestine is in the 5100s SE of Mos Entha) Write that down. Find 2 missions that are in the general number of 5100 SE. (their usually about 500-600 credits). Accept the 2 missions, shuttle over to Bestine, collect your booty, and wait for your friends to collect up and go.
Your in Mos Espa. You find a mission that pays 890 credits. It's final destination is 11256m SW. Where is that? Open your map and you'll find its Wayfar. No shuttle or starport there so you'll have to hit Bestine and run to the city.
This little trick with a tad of variations depending on the situation will let you know where you are, where you need to be in the quickest possible way, and where you are every step of your journey. There is POIs (Point of Interest) and areas to see throughout the Galaxys. Visit some of them. Theres a guide here ( (Understanding maps, way points and your radar)

Happy Travels.
