Intragalactic Planetary's Guide to Fishing
Okay, I've spent a little time fishing recently, to collect what I needed
for Pet Stim D's, and this is what I think I've figured out.
First, your fishing pole needs to be baited. You can find bait by Foraging
(a skill you get at Wilderness Survival I in the Scout profession). You
also end up with Chum Bait after filleting a caught fish, and you can use
that too. Just drag the bait onto your fishing pole to bait your hook.
When you cast your line, a 2-tug combo is set that will hook the fish.
Whenever you have to recast for any reason, that combo seems to reset. So
you sit there and wait, like real fishing, and when you get a Nibble, you
try a direction, like Tug Up. Either it will go back to Waiting status or
it will lead to a Bite (or you may lose your bait or something, I think that
may just happen randomly sometimes). If it goes back to Waiting, you know
that the direction you just chose is not the right one to get a Bite, so
after the next Nibble, try Left or Right until you get a Bite. Same goes
for after you get a Bite. You try a direction (it can be the same direction
you just did) and it will either go back to Waiting or change to Caught
Something. If it goes back to Waiting though, at this point, you already
know which direction will get a Bite, so once you get a Nibble, do that
again, you'll get a Bite, and then you can try one of the other two
directions til you get the Caught Something message. Once you get that,
choose Small Reel-In and your character will start to do so.
For example - you cast you line in the water, and at first the status says
Waiting. So you wait... After a few seconds you get a Nibble, and click on
Tug Up. The status goes back to waiting... You get another Nibble and try
Tug Left, and it still goes back to Waiting. Now, since you haven't had to
re-cast at this point, after the next Nibble, you choose Tug Right (by the
process of elimination) and the status changes to Bite. You then click on
Tug Up, and the status goes back to Waiting. When you get a Nibble again,
you choose Tug Right, because you have already determined that's the first
part of the two-part combo. That takes you back to Bite status again. Now
you already tried Tug Up after a Bite and it didn't work, so this time you
try Tug Left, and it works, so you get a Caught Something message.
Now at this point, what I think I've found is that your character won't reel
in the catch until it's about directly under the tip of your pole. So if
your cork is farther away than that, try and move towards it (but don't go
too far in the water, or you'll start swimming and have to start over). If
the fish charges up so close on you that it's CLOSER than the end of your
pole, try and move back a few steps or your line will go slack after a few
seconds and you'll lose it. The whole system seems to work in 'ticks', and
every tick (being about 5 or 6 seconds), the fish takes an action, and then
a few seconds later you execute an action. So if the fish charges too close
in on you, you seem to have a couple of seconds to get some distance before
you try reeling in again. Basically, it's just a dance to try and keep the
cork right under the tip of your pole without getting too deep in the water.
One of the best ways I've found is to barely wade into the water, and cast
your line almost parallel to the shore. Then you can kind of run back and
forth along the shore to try and get into the right position, without ever
having to go too deep in the water.
Once you've caught something, you can bring up the radial menu on it in your
inventory and choose Filet Fish. You will then get a few Chum bait (usually
between 2-5) and some "Fish". The amount of fish I've gotten off of one
catch has ranged from between 1-17 (though usually it's on the lower end of
that scale). Supposedly, they are about to increase the volume you get from
one catch, and that amount will be higher for fish caught on the tougher,
non-starting planets (which is a MUCH needed change). The fish you fillet
from any given planet will all be of the same type - i.e. Dantooine Fish
Meat (though the specific KIND of Dantooine Fish Meat will vary with name
and quality over time, just like any Herbivore Meat or Carnivore Meat or
whatever). So even if you filet a blackfish, a striped fish, and a laa,
they will all yield the same Dantooine Fish Meat (assuming you caught them
all on Dantooine within the same period of time - before the type of
resource migrated).
The final step - take all the Fish Meat you've collected and give it to
Intragalactic Planetary. He would very much appreciate it.
