This was posted in the SWG beta forums, so some information may be out of date.
Welcome to Beta, you choose artisan, and can't figure out where to start, what to do.
You start out with 3 tools in your inventory.
A)General crafting Tool
B) Mineral Survey Tool
C) Flora Survey Tool
If you train in Artisan, you will not have those tools, approach an artisan and ask them politely if you can buy one General Crafting Tool, and a Mineral Survey Tool for a reasonable price (usually less than 200 credits for both)
You start out with schematics that allow you to build more precise tools, but we'll get to that.
Open up your inventory, and click on the Mineral Survey Tool. the radial will light up.
(See the flashing? That's the tool logging into the server. As a general SWG rule, it's best to wait until it stops flashing until you start whatever you wish to accomplish. If it NEVER stops flashing, log out, server is coming down, or your system is going to crash
Once the radial has fully filled, you get options tab, click on it, or hit 4 on your keyboard, and set the range to your only choice.
Then click on the tool again, and select use, or hit 1. It will open, you will have a mini-map, and mineral types to your right. Select one of those mineral type (a metal, you will use it for crafting) and click on survey. If you watch, you'll hear a high squeak, and see rotating red bands eminate from your survey device. You will get either one of two resource responses a percentage, or "resource not found".
Resource Not Found:
If you get a resource not found, then select a new one, or run to the other side of town and try again.
Percentage:
Hit alt key, you now can run around. When you surveyed, a Waypoint was created. You'll see a celestial blue bar, and an arrow that points you in the direction of the waypoint (referred here on as WP). Run to the WP, and re-survey. Run to the next WP, and keep moving out. Now minimizing the survey window is critical. You can now run around buildings, and tab to select through any red things you bump into. If it's read, and you're outside of town, you must be cautious. Many mobs are aggressive, and will kill, so if you don't know what it is, find out. Run from WP to WP surveying as you go, until you find a concentration higher than 75% if possible, if it's lower, you will not have a reasonable success rate. Once you find a metal resource higher than 75%, then stand on top of the WP that marks the highest resource point, and click "Sample"
Sampling.
You will get a notification, you failed to take a sample, or a successful sample, along with a resource container in your inventory. As you continue to sample, click on your resource, and select examine. You will then see the specific resource and it's quality. The higher the numbers, the better the resource's quality, and the better items you get from crafting it.
You continue to sample until you have roughly 250 metal. After this dedicated effort, you should have reached Survey II. Take your 250 metal and then fire up your General Crafting Tool.
General Crafting Tool.
Your General Crafting Tool is a general purpose tool that you will use in the beginning to craft everything that you will start out with, during the initial phase of your career.
When you launch the GCT, you get a series of craft-able items that are organized up at the top of the bar. You have a series of schematic headers, general, food and chemical, weapons, clothing, armor, etc...
You will need more survey tools, and they are craft-able now that you have metal to make them.
Click on the mineral survey tool, and then select next, it will bring up the schematic. You will see the requirements for the device. Double click on metal until all of the slots are filled, and click next, you will receive a warning that all resources will be lost if you proceed. No better time than the present, click ok, and see what happened. Your success will range from marginal to AMAZING, and you will have your new item ready to manufacture. If you get a critical failure, you loose everything, and start over. The success range is important, because the greater the success, the more experience when you use your device.
Wait, I just made a tool I already have! Yep, which is why I told you to get 250 metal You will remake ALL of your tools, because you will get experience for their creation and use. Continue by re-making flora survey, and chemical survey devices.
Then you will survey and sample for Chemical, preferably the Fiberplast currently on your planet, or inert petrochemical. Sample for this until you get 100, then replenish your metal back up to 250. Pack up and head to town. You can now replace your general crafting tool, and start to make the CDEF Carbine, which is not issued at startup.
In town you will see a series of new players, most of which will be glad to take survey, crafting tools, and carbines and would be willing to pay a reasonable sum (100 credits). As they use them, and you kick them out you'll see your exp grow. By now you should have enough exp to train at least Survey I (possibly Survey II) and Engineer I or Domestic I. Waltz around town and talk with the artisans, and negotiate with them training to the next level.
With Survey I you can now re-calibrate your range, and increase your range so that you are more effective, and you will get more rewarding sample rates. Survey II will give you greater rates, and more success, and more per sample.
Engineer I (tinkering) will open more crafting options (the CDEF rifle, and more) which will allow you to create more and more complex items. complexity means more experience per crafting session. You will need 3000 points to get to where you can really take off.
Continue Engineering and Domestic Arts to level 2. You will then have everything you need to produce armor. Talk to scouts and gather bone, and hide in abundance. Armor creation will very quicky move you to the point where you can start your harvesters, or any other device you feel you need to excel.
