    This was posted in the SWG beta forums, so some information may be out of date.

    Welcome to Beta, you choose artisan, and can't figure out where to start, what to do.

    You start out with 3 tools in your inventory.
    A)General crafting Tool
    B) Mineral Survey Tool
    C) Flora Survey Tool

    If you train in Artisan, you will not have those tools, approach an artisan and ask them politely if you can buy one General Crafting Tool, and a Mineral Survey Tool for a reasonable price (usually less than 200 credits for both)

    You start out with schematics that allow you to build more precise tools, but we'll get to that.

    Open up your inventory, and click on the Mineral Survey Tool. the radial will light up.

    (See the flashing? That's the tool logging into the server. As a general SWG rule, it's best to wait until it stops flashing until you start whatever you wish to accomplish. If it NEVER stops flashing, log out, server is coming down, or your system is going to crash

    Once the radial has fully filled, you get options tab, click on it, or hit 4 on your keyboard, and set the range to your only choice.

    Then click on the tool again, and select use, or hit 1. It will open, you will have a mini-map, and mineral types to your right. Select one of those mineral type (a metal, you will use it for crafting) and click on survey. If you watch, you'll hear a high squeak, and see rotating red bands eminate from your survey device. You will get either one of two resource responses a percentage, or "resource not found".

    Resource Not Found:

    If you get a resource not found, then select a new one, or run to the other side of town and try again.

    Percentage:

    Hit alt key, you now can run around. When you surveyed, a Waypoint was created. You'll see a celestial blue bar, and an arrow that points you in the direction of the waypoint (referred here on as WP). Run to the WP, and re-survey. Run to the next WP, and keep moving out. Now minimizing the survey window is critical. You can now run around buildings, and tab to select through any red things you bump into. If it's read, and you're outside of town, you must be cautious. Many mobs are aggressive, and will kill, so if you don't know what it is, find out. Run from WP to WP surveying as you go, until you find a concentration higher than 75% if possible, if it's lower, you will not have a reasonable success rate. Once you find a metal resource higher than 75%, then stand on top of the WP that marks the highest resource point, and click "Sample"

    Sampling.

    You will get a notification, you failed to take a sample, or a successful sample, along with a resource container in your inventory. As you continue to sample, click on your resource, and select examine. You will then see the specific resource and it's quality. The higher the numbers, the better the resource's quality, and the better items you get from crafting it.

    You continue to sample until you have roughly 250 metal. After this dedicated effort, you should have reached Survey II. Take your 250 metal and then fire up your General Crafting Tool.

    General Crafting Tool.

    Your General Crafting Tool is a general purpose tool that you will use in the beginning to craft everything that you will start out with, during the initial phase of your career.

    When you launch the GCT, you get a series of craft-able items that are organized up at the top of the bar. You have a series of schematic headers, general, food and chemical, weapons, clothing, armor, etc...

    You will need more survey tools, and they are craft-able now that you have metal to make them.

    Click on the mineral survey tool, and then select next, it will bring up the schematic. You will see the requirements for the device. Double click on metal until all of the slots are filled, and click next, you will receive a warning that all resources will be lost if you proceed. No better time than the present, click ok, and see what happened. Your success will range from marginal to AMAZING, and you will have your new item ready to manufacture. If you get a critical failure, you loose everything, and start over. The success range is important, because the greater the success, the more experience when you use your device.

    Wait, I just made a tool I already have! Yep, which is why I told you to get 250 metal You will remake ALL of your tools, because you will get experience for their creation and use. Continue by re-making flora survey, and chemical survey devices.

    Then you will survey and sample for Chemical, preferably the Fiberplast currently on your planet, or inert petrochemical. Sample for this until you get 100, then replenish your metal back up to 250. Pack up and head to town. You can now replace your general crafting tool, and start to make the CDEF Carbine, which is not issued at startup.

    In town you will see a series of new players, most of which will be glad to take survey, crafting tools, and carbines and would be willing to pay a reasonable sum (100 credits). As they use them, and you kick them out you'll see your exp grow. By now you should have enough exp to train at least Survey I (possibly Survey II) and Engineer I or Domestic I. Waltz around town and talk with the artisans, and negotiate with them training to the next level.

    With Survey I you can now re-calibrate your range, and increase your range so that you are more effective, and you will get more rewarding sample rates. Survey II will give you greater rates, and more success, and more per sample.

    Engineer I (tinkering) will open more crafting options (the CDEF rifle, and more) which will allow you to create more and more complex items. complexity means more experience per crafting session. You will need 3000 points to get to where you can really take off.

    Continue Engineering and Domestic Arts to level 2. You will then have everything you need to produce armor. Talk to scouts and gather bone, and hide in abundance. Armor creation will very quicky move you to the point where you can start your harvesters, or any other device you feel you need to excel.

      Yo what's up newbies...?....?...?
      *Best race for newb artisan=mon cals....Great bonuses....after that, Bothans, after that humans, etc.  Problem is, everyone hates fish face, moncals and they get dueled constantly....also they look stupid.
      *Best Starting Area=Moenia, Naboo....hit the ground running with the artisan mission terminals. 1350cr+ x2 missions to Deejay Peak, + 1350+ x2 missions back to Moenia (go somewhat inside the guild hall by the capital for the terminal) = 5400cr -420(airfare back)=mad loot for almost no work. You can buy a swoop bike in 2 hours, etc...THIS FLIPPIN' RULES. If you use burst run you can time both shuttles with no wait.
      *If you miss em', afk a survey macro and rail your woman or watch some porn whatever floats your boat.....Remember, this game consumes too much real time and that every moment in the real world with your avatar running afk macros=happy significant other, less groaning and moaning from them, less likelihood of relationship failure. With max AFK macro, I barely manage with my wife....LOL. How many of you like me, have chosen this game over SEX....Pathetic but absolutely realist...huh?
      *AFK survey macro=a couple days work to master survey xp while sleeping, slamming your ho' or drinking with the boys. Cntrl+O, turn off AFK options then then CNTRL+A to make a macro called "GotBetterThingsToDoThenSittingBehindAcpuSurveying" (or whatever), survey your choice of resource, go to it then:
      /kneel;
      /pause 01;
      /sample;
      /pause 15;
      /sample;
      /pause 15;

      /sit;
      /pause 50;
      /macro GotBetterThingsToDoThanSitBehindAcpuSurveying (or whatever the heck you want to call it)

      Just come out of the drunken stooper long enough to ask a loser who did the whole thing at his/her keyboard to train you. You did the same thing they did while falling off, blacked out, naked with your significant other, eating Taco Bell at 3am, whatever.....IT WASN'T BEHIND THE KEYBOARD!!!!

      *Add insult to injury by blasting through the remaining 3 skill trees to Master Artisan in a couple hours by:
      1)Getting around 20k aluminum, your AFK macro should have accomplished close to this, if not just fly to Theed and buy the aluminum you need from the bazaar with the cash/money/loochie/skrillah' you earned from running the weak a$$ Artisan Missions.
      2)Park your butt in the landing area of a starport (if your internet connection is good). This is to find trainers easily, if not chill out somewhere else). Sample for a mineral at close range and.....
      3)Turn on your AFK sample Macro to recoup some of the loss your about to incur. I put mine in Shift + F12 of my #6 toolslot (CNTRL+F6). Helps to keep all the lame macros in one spot.
      4)Have three generic crafting tools made., hit CTRL+F6, put the crafting tools in F2,F3 and F4. The cpu counts F1 as 00, F2 as 01, etc...don't ask me why, unlike the programming dorks, I've got a life.......
      5.Be a "MACROSEXUAL" like me and practice making wind surveying tools (They take only aluminum, give good xp and are painless to create)and run this sucker in the order I tell you:
      *hit CNTRL+A to bring up Macro Commands
      *Click on New Macro
      *(call it GrindTheSystem, or some such nonsense)
      *Pick an icon you'll recognize
      *in the text body type this:
      /ui action toolbarSlot 01;
      /selectdraftSchematic 29;(my location for wind survey tool....this is where you have to think and count....if it's not wind survey tool that pops up, CNTRL+D, count up or down from what you tried to make and adjust until you have wind survey tool)
      /pause 5;(This is where you double click aluminum 3 times, pretty easy unless you have Bear Paws or your mouse hand is on your girls breast)
      /nextcraftingstage;
      /nextcraftingstage;(maybe you need to chuck this line in once more if you're a retard and craft next to a public crafting machine that brings up experimentation)
      /createPrototype practice no item;
      /createPrototype practice no item;
      /pause 4;
      /ui action toolbarSlot02;(this skips the sucker to the GCT[general crafting tool] in F3)
      /selectdraftSchematic 29;
      /pause 5;
      /nextcraftingstage;
      /nextcraftingstage;
      /createPrototype practice no item;
      /createPrototype practice no item;
      /pause 4;
      /ui action toolbarSlot03;
      /selectdraftSchematic 29;
      /pause 5;
      /nextcraftingstage;
      /nextcragtingstage;
      /createPrototype practice no item;
      /createPrototype practice no item;
      /pause 4;
      /ui action toolbarSlot00;(Very important to add this as it loops the macro or instead type /macroXXXXXXX (X's being the exact name you called the macro)
      *when finished, chuck the sucker into (CNTRL + F6)toolbar slot F1
      *Enjoy your new life as a multiple clicking video game dork and watch in horror for a couple hours as you become progessively dumb and brain numb. This is a small price to pay for the overall time you'll save......offet to train anyone who needs it in the starport or if absolutely necessary fly to Theed and chill outside the Starport offering training>>>>>>
      *ENJOY BEING A MASTER IN ONE DAY.!.!.!.!
      *Plant harvesters, make swoop bikes to sell for cash, push up another skill tree......have fun with this game. If your gonna let your real life relationships suffer, be rich in the game...go Armorsmith/Weaponsmith/Chef. Save Architect for Holos it takes almost 2,000,000cr worth of resources to grind out making walls then GunganHead Statues. This is a holo only class, unless you really want to torture yourself.
      *Have fun, I hope this helps....

      I have read almost all the forms/ guides/ information on the allakhazam site and if your a first time player-all out noob, start off as a Artisan. Its such a simple profession to start off with if u have a quick guide. You will meet some people quickly, learn the economy, and most likly be able to make a few objects on your own within the first hour of playing. Later on you can become a master fighter so just try out the Astisan profession to get to know the basics quickly.

        Well, if you consider that it COSTS 20 creds to place an auction in the first place, you're telling people to spend money for a CHANCE that someone will buy their items, allowing them to break even (Actually, losing on the value of the items used in crafting). It's not worth it... rather than selling at a break-even or loss level (Or, god forbid, losing that 20 creds or locking up one of your Bazaar Sales slots when nobody buys it), just destroy them. It helps the economy, in a way.

        Now, if you can provide SUPERIOR CDEF weapons through experimentation, by all means price yours a little higher - but make sure you've changed the title of the weapon to signify it, or people will overlook it. Most newbies don't know what stats to look for, after all. I call mine, "Superior CDEF Pistol," or, "High-Damage CDEF Carbine," for example.

          The game is fine even if you live in UK...no problems registering or playing...

          Any further advice, especially UK, email me at saxxan@hotmail.com with a subject that's relevant to this article...I get too many "enlarge your [insert bodypart here]" emails ;-)

      should have posted the correction as well.  metal is not the only thing you need for most of the items. there is a very distinct difference between metal and mineral. nearly all of the crafting pieces requirre elements of both. Also, the surveying caps at a thousand xp until you train surveying 1. Also experience is not connected to the amount of ore mined. If you are forced to mine in a lesser area (40-60%) your xp will hit 1000 much faster than your mined material will get to 250. Also. Rori is not the place to start if you want to be an artisan (IMHO because the availability of mineral is non-existent except in the form of jewels. (can't use those in crafting tools to my knowledge) This guide is a definite start though.
