A guide to harvesters, by NLX3647

Harvesters are automated mining machines. For each resource type there are harvesters. Harvesters can be obtained from artisans or architects.

The resource types are:

  • Mineral
  • Organics
  • Windenergy
  • Solar Energy
  • Gas
  • Chemicals
  • Water

You find these with the appropriate surveying tool. Using those is outside the scope of this guide. You don't need any skills to use or own a harvester.

As soon as you have found a good concentration of a resource, or are given the waypoint to a good resource location, you can place a harvester. Place it by doubleclicking the deed in your inventory. The view shifts to an overhead view, where you can see your surroundings. Areas that are yellow can not be used to place your harvester. Move your mouse around until you find a spot where your harvester lights up green. Then click once. This will place your harvester.
If you can't place your harvester because of the available (or rather not available) space, you can rotate your harvester by RIGHT clicking. You will notice that it turns 90 degrees. This might be useful to squeeze that medium harvester into the spot you want it to be in.

You will be returned to the familiar SWG view. Look around to find the newly placed structure. It will be marked by a structure marker with 4 red lines around it. By bringing up the radial menu and selecting status you can see how long it will take to build your harvester.

    The radial menu

After the harvester has been built, bring up the radial menu on it. You will see examine, manage structure and manage structure permissions. The one that you will spend your time the most in will be Manage Structure.

    Manage Structure has 5 submenus:

  • Destroy Structure
  • Status
  • Maintenance
  • Deposit Power
  • Operate Harvester

Most of these options are fairly straightforward.
Status gives you an overview of the status of your harvester. How much maintenance is still in the structure, how much power is left, maintenance rate, and a few other things. Pay attention to Maintenance left and power left. These will tell you how long your harvester still has left to operate. A harvester that drops to 99% maintenance will stop working. It will also stop working if it uses up all power that you put into it.
Different harvesters have different maintenance rates, for these see the bottom of this guide.

Maintenance will give a popup where you can type the amount of credits that you want to deposit into it, or you can also be pay it from the commmandline. Target the harvester and use the commmand:

/paymaintenance xxxx, where xxxx is the amount in credits.

Deposit power does the same thing but then for power. This is a slider however, but you can also type the amount on the right side if you click right next to the 0. The powerindicator uses a 60 hour indicator, like this (thanks to SWGcraft.com):

    0:48 = 48 hours
    1:00 = 60 hours
    1:12 = 72 hours

This is all in preparation for the actual reason you placed the harvester: gathering resources.

Opening Operate harvester will give you a window, with at the top 2 buttons called "start harvester" and "stop harvester", in the middle a button called "change resource" and an "access hopper" button at the bottom. Clicking on Change Resource will give you a new window with all the resources at that exact spot with their concentrations. Click on the resource you want to gather and click ok. Finally click on start harvester. The harvester starts moving, and at the left and right side of the Operate Harvester window a bar will start scrolling, indicating your harvester is now gathering resources. Click ok again to return to your main SWG window.

After a while, say 24 hours, you can visit the harvester again to pick up the resources it collected. Go to the Operate Harvester window and click on "Access Hopper". A new window will open with a few buttons at the bottom. Select the resource you want to have transferred to your inventory and click on "retrieve". This will move the resources into your inventory. Press escape twice to return to the main SWG window.
It's also smart to check the status of the harvester while you're near it, to make sure it has enough credits for maintenance and enough power. Don't leave home without either!

Resources shift on a regular basis. You can do three things: get a new harvester and let the old one destroy itself, destroy it manually, or reclaim the deed.
The first one is the easiest. You don't have to do anything for it, just wait until the harvester self-destructs.
The second option destroys your harvester. Go to Structure Management and then Destroy Structure. Do that twice within 30 seconds, and your harvester will be gone.
The third option, moving, consists of putting enough credits into your harvester so it can be reclaimed, and then placing it on the new location. The amount of credits that is needed to reclaim the deed is always 100 times the maintenance rate. So, say there are 230 credits left in your harvester with a maintenance rate of 30, how much do you put in? 30 x 100 - 230 = 2770 credits. Then do destroy structure twice, or use the /destroystructure command twice, and the deed will be back in your inventory.

When you are redeed a harvester, remove everything from the hopper first! You can't save resources in a deed.

    Structure Permissions

Structure permissions gives you control over who you give access to what on your harvester. You can give admin access or hopper access. However, I don't know how the hopper access works, since if you give someone hopper access, they don't see anything new on their radial menu when they click on the harvester (could be a command though... I haven't checked this), so admin access is pretty much the only viable option right now.
You can also set the permission from the commandline with:
    /setpermission admin <playername>
    /setpermission hopper <playername>
This is handy if you want to set up a group of harvesters and want a group of people to have access to them. Making an alias here is almost a necessity.
Note: the disconnections that occured when you used the operate machinery window too much were a bug and this has been fixed.

I hope this guide will answer some questions on how to use a harvester.
