Jump to Lightspeed - Wingman Command Creation Guide
Communication and coordination between wingmen in JTL is extremely complicated, as the action is often so dense that the pilot cannot find the time to type. The lack of chat or 'comm silence' while in combat is very dull, and something has to be done about it.
Although a very good solution is to use a voicechat tool like Teamspeak or Ventrilo, some people do not want to or cannot use them for various reasons.
I personally always liked the quick wingman commands from the X-Wing (and TIE Fighter) Series of games and have missed them greatly in Jump to Lightspeed. Therefore I decided to create some macros with a key binding that closely resembles the Wingman Commands present throughout the X-Wing Series of games.
Besides, the range of spatial chat in space is extremely limited in JTL even for /shout (1000m), /exclaim (800m), /say (500m) and the likes, which makes the existing pre-defined "Comm Chatter" commands pretty much useless as well when used at larger distances.
For these reasons have created this guide on how to create Wingman Commands similar to the ones used in the X-Wing Series.
To do this, I created a bunch of short macros that can be bound to key combinations like the ones used in the X-Wing Series of games that use both /shout and /groupChat at the same time so they can be heard by your wingmen and thus further communication in during dogfights immensely. If you think the double messages are too much, you may leave the lines that start with /shout out of the macros. In that case only your group members will then be able to get your commands.
I have bound the actual commands that you give your wingmen to SHIFT+, and optional replies to these commands (like the AI wingmen in the X-Wing Series give you) to ALT+. While I know that ALT is used to switch between mouselook/HUD modes which could be annoying, I personally prefer to have this function to the middle mouse button instead, as it gives me more flexibility. The detailed replies are not necessary, though, as most orders can be replied to with the Affirmative and Negative macros.
Of course you may also change the text and key binding to your liking to suit your character better, but I recommend you keep the meaning of the messages in tact.
Note that these key combinations have been designed with a X-Wing Series-style keyoard layout combined with a joystick in mind.
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Launch your ship into space.
2. Press CTRL+A (default) and klick on macros.
3. Create a new macro.
4. While piloting a ship, go into the Options menu (default:CTRL+O).
5. Click on Controls
6. Click Keymap
7. Klick on the tab named Custom
8. Scroll down to find the name of the first of your newly created macros
9. Double-klick on it or click (re)bind.
10. Press the key combination that you would like to trigger this macro (for example SHIFT+A).
11. Rinse and repeat with the other macros.
