There are many players that do not wish to be exposed to forms of "immature" communication such as the so-called "leet-speak" in Star Wars Galaxies. Reasons for this is that it destroys the roleplaying, immersion and Star Wars atmosphere or it may be simply annoying when used too much. The only way to avoid this at the moment ist to use /addignore on the player, but this completely bans you from interaction with them and them from interaction with you. Therefore I have come up with this radically creative vision on how to allow players to choose not to be exposed to it, even using modifications of mechanics already existing in SWG:
1. There will be an adjustable client-side word filter that will allow players to replace any words or sequences of words (with letters, numerals, spaces and other signs) typed by anybody with other words and word sequences in chat tabs and chat bubbles.
The words replaced and the words that they will be replaced with will be fully customizable.
It will work similar to the chat color tab in the options menu, just that instead of choosing a color for a given word (sequence), you will be able to input a replacement word (sequence), a blank (just hit space) or even an /emote.
The replaced words and word sequences will appear in a slightly different shade than the regular text in order to highlight a filtered change by default, but the color will be allowed to be adjusted as the player pleases as well. There will be an option to click enable and disable the customizable word filter just like it is with the profanity filter. Also, there will be an option to enable or disable the word filter for any chat tab individually. Word filter files will be saved in the player’s profiles folder and players will be able to exchange them on the internet. Some examples: You could choose to replace "lol" with "haha". Everytime anybody now types and enters "lol" in any chat tab, it will show up as "haha" to you. You could choose to replace "u" with "you". Everytime anybody now types and enters "u" in any chat tab, it will show up as "you" to you. You could choose to replace “n00b” with “kid”. Everytime anybody now types “n00b” in any chat tab, it will show up as “kid” to you.
You could choose to replace “thx” with “thanks”. Everytime anybody now types “thx” in any chat tab, it will show up as “thanks” to you. Players could choose to replace “:-)” with “; /smile”. Now everytime somebody types “:-)”, he or she will appear to do the preset in-game emote /smile instead. + This will improve the atmosphere and immersion in the game a lot, especially for roleplayers, Star Wars fans and more mature players + It will allow roleplayers and other players to avoid being exposed to the so-called leet speak and other foul language that roxxor-kiddies and the likes use to destroy the atmosphere in Star Wars Galaxies ever again + It will prevent avid leet speakers from being added to a roleplayer's ignore list immediately after saying something "leet" and allow them to interact with roleplayers instead of gating them from the benefits of interaction with the same + The word filter file being saved and tradable will allow people to adjust the word filter accordingly + The filter only being client side, will still allow people to normally see what is really written with the filter disabled or if the word is not chosen as being filtered + Being able to enable and disable the word filter for any chat tab individually will allow people to choose in which chat situations they would like to have the words replaced (in-character vs. out-of-character channels, for example)
+ Marking the replaced words in a different shade will allow people to see that a word has been filtered Message Edited by Glzmo on 09-17-2005 12:19 PM
