What really saddend me today. is someone said that the CU destroyed the game and sadly only thing left was RP.. i was floored. RP in a RPG NO!!! say it isn't SO! sadly video game RPGs have had nothing in common with their table top roots. but MOST people who play todays MMO's played table top first. it's what they enjoy. All that was started by this thread was a solution of choice for those who log on to play a fictional character in the starwars universe the extra bump they need to not have that experiance ruined by "OL that so ROXXORD! i pwned that n00b Jeedeey!" In all honesty i don't think this is THAT unreasonable request. But interestingly enough leet speak and griefer tend to go hand in hand. just and observation.

Inspired idea which I support!

Also I would like the game to make some default changes for all, like the examples that you mentioned. It should be like the profanity filter. Whoever wants to see the l33t words should be able to but he should get a tag above his toon like "infection" or "abomination"

Seriously anything that improves immersion has my support! After all why do we play this MMO?? Cause it's Star Wars. Ruin that and you have a pointless product...

I wouldn't be here if I weren't a strong supporter of 3869209th chances...

Sounds great, only concerns is that the developers use their typical level of coding for this (eg: shoddy.) and we wind up with issues like someone changing the phrase "Can you slice my weapon? oh and hi" to "Can you go **** your **** and **********************? oh and hi" and the client pulling the filtered text for /report instead of what they actually recieved, and the filter not necessarily counting spaces or whatever, thus resulting in "Hey, we're going to war with MLyou" or any other plethora of possibilities. I'd personally like to set every single damn letter to filter "(letter in caps)" to the letter without quotes, so I can actually see and use it in proper context. "Its haru with a U, not two O's".

But honestly changes like these are long overdue, and I would really love it to see at least this vision reach the devs eyes. Now all you need to do is have a vision for character naming to prevent all the "Ibow Nin'U" idiots running around.

I'm a hypocrite!!!

I sometimes have a difficult time wanting to roleplay simply because of l33t speak.  It just sucks the atmospher away; however, I use it myself.  Monkey see, monkey do?

I love this idea...maybe such a system would reminded me why I want to play this game, without the modern distraction.

What I find funny is after reading all the replies to the original poster's thread is the amount of people who really didn't read it at all. Everyone is so defensive because they see it as an attack on their playstyle when in actuality it is a request for a simple ui that supports the actual role-players.

To put it simply, if you aren't a role-player it will not affect you. Quite the opposite really, right now I know many role-players who will flat out ignore you if your language is out of character. Imagine if these role-players have things you need ie: a skill, an item etc. giving them this tool will solve at least one of the relation issues between these two MMO worlds without having the need for separate servers, hard feelings and alienation.

As a person who is guilty of both (I roleplay in spatial but do my <(0.0<) t('-'t) stuff in guildchat or tells) I am fine either way but on all the MMOs I have played, I wished a device like this was available. Good work, if SOE can't implement it I hope it is read by someone who could influence our future MMOs to develop tools for the few who immerse themselves into these games.

It will prevent avid leet speakers from being added to a roleplayer's ignore list immediately after saying something "leet" and allow them to interact with roleplayers instead of gating them from the benefits of interaction with the same
