* Don't beg from other people. We all started off in the same boat as you with the same equipment and made our money through playing the game. Just because somebody has something you want, it doesn't mean you're entitled to it. Sorry to sound like somebody's Dad, but we worked hard to get where we are in the game and you should do the same. (You're more likely to get a hand-out if you're nice to somebody and just talk to them, but please, don't expect free equipment. Some people can help you out, some can't, so don't go around thinking people owe you stuff. Also, talking to people is a good way to get to grips with the game and you'll find that providing somebody isn't in the middle of something, they'll be willing to spend some time helping you out.)
Bless you for posting this. Just because I have the helper badge does not mean I give handouts to bums. If I have time I'll run missions with new players, but you earn your keep. What can I say? I'm a capitalist pig with traditional values.
For the new guys-
Many of us enjoy helping out the new guys and there are several guilds out there willing to provide you with a house, vehicle, etc. If you want to make this game more enjoyable, join a guild, get a group of friends that are on at the same time you are and run missions as a team. This is a great game, but gets boring solo.
As you 1st start out, pick up more than one novice skill and dabble in the various professions. Not only will this help you get a feel of what you want to specialize in it'll help you out getting apprenticeship points.

At which point of the character creation process should I see an option to choose my starting planet? Tatooine is nice and all but I was hoping to start somewhere less dusty.

It is no longer an option. All starting players start in Mos Eisley, Tatooine. After completing a few starter missions from your helper droid you should have enough money to travel to another planet more to your liking. Just go to the Starport and buy a shuttle ticket and you're on your way.
