They still can't get belts to fit right after trying again.. do you really think they can pull of a server merge without wrecking this game more ?
As a good friend pointed out.. how many cities will be lost because people might be at work or out of town when this happens ?
After the CU and NGE do you really want to re-enact the Oklahoma land rush with this bonanza of hostility that you all ( SOE/LA ) have managed to create so successfully.
Ohhh if history repeats itself its gonna be ugly lol.
now that you say it that way, it sounds even more exciting lol !
everyone logging in an rushing to lay a city hall woooo hooo cant wait
I want to play SWG sugar... not titanic lol.
none of us have played swg since november 15th , 2006
there are not enough players on any of the servers to make them fun! and a bunch of old structures and what not are cluttering everything, i wouldnt mind it so much if they where current players structures.
Forced server consolidation would do more harm than good, if they fix the game and add lots of new content we might get the numbers back.
please elaborate on how " forced server consolidation would do more harm than good " and i think your wrong about the " new content = new players " thing, while it is true to some extent, its simply not going to be enough to populate servers to where they need to be.
How about this, I would stop playing if I was forced to switch servers. I have too much stuff and would lose all of it. No thanks.
im sure that if they consolidate servers, they would come up with a way to allow you to keep 99% of your stuff, and thats why they havent done it yet, because they havent figured out how to do it to where you wouldnt loose a lot of **edit**
Last weekend we had our first ever Influencers Summit. It was a lot of fun, and I have to say I learned quite a bit. We deliberately brought people in that were some of our biggest criitics. We wanted to hear directly from them and understand the issues they had.
At one point I spent an hour or so talking with a group of the Star Wars Galaxies players that had come. It was a very interesting and enlightening discussion, and I wanted to thank all of them for their candor.
I wanted to make sure I close the loop on that discussion because I walked away with some new priorities.
Here are my thoughts:
1) Content is the single biggest thing people playing SWG want. - this surprised me. From our perspective we had thought revising the systems in the game (i.e. expertise revamps) was a bigger deal. While they did say this was important, I was susprised they ranked this higher than working on PVP.
This is absolute proof of a MAJOR communication breakdown between players and SOE that has YET to be corrected.
2) This lead to a discussion about involving the community in the decision making process. They pointed out that we do a lousy job at this, and they're right. As such, you can expect a poll in the near future to help us prioritize things for the next 6-12 months.
Use alot of the best elements from pre-cu and the CU as a template for development direction along with player feedback polls.
3) Guild Management tools in SWG aren't up to snuff - I went ballistic when I heard you can only manage your guild through the terminal. We need to fix this.
Scaring me here, this is a very old problem you just noticed?
4) Server consolidation - we need to fasttrack this - it's a very hard problem, and the team has had other priorities.
Well, we didn't really need a server merge prior to November of 2005.
5) We need to explain ourselves and the thinking behind changes a lot better
We are still wondering how thinking that the NGE would improve the player population came about. The fact that SOE thought it would help despite every player knowing it wasn't ready and the damage it would cause. Players saw it plain as day, SOE did not.
6) Once we got past the "please bring back the pre-NGE servers" (no, we're never going to do that) the discussion really got down to brass tacks. Many people ask me why I don't post a lot here, and the simple answer is that it's hard to follow a thread when many of the posts end up being "bring back pre-NGE servers" and other issues we've moved past. Please don't misunderstand me on this - I get why some people want this. It's just that it isn't possible and at some point if we're going to move the game forward new ideas are at the top of the list of things we should be discussing. That's my view anyways.
Smed
I can deal with that. But please, somebody post the real reason it cannot happen. Then move on to reintroducing the favorite elements from pre-cu and the CU back into the game. Focus away from FPS and back to more strategy and specialties in combat and real diversity.

Offer server transfers at no charge and allow players to take all their stuff. From reading these posts many are against server merges but some of the servers have so few people that it's hard to even get any real pvp going anymore. So allow is to choose a server and move and those who want to stay on a dead server let them.

That's all I can say.

Nice to finally hear this "officially". If we heard more from the actual people in charge, and not just the people who pass out the tin hats, I think we'd have a lot less people handing out tin hats.
5) We need to explain ourselves and the thinking behind changes a lot better
Yes.
On a side note...
I was reading some Developer notes from "another" game. No, not WoW. I was very pleased and surprised to find that the Development team was communicative and friendly. They even joked about the bug fixes, bonked themselves on the head a bit about some of the glitches they'd had to fix, but in a humorous way. It was actually a pleasure to read patch notes.
How nice would it be for SWG Developers to be more communicative? To have a good working relationship with the community? Every time the SWG community gets a smidgen of info handed out, as we did above, I think "why is there such a huge gap between these posts?".
Maybe you can fix that as well, Mr. Smedley. Because as much as I understand not wanting to post because of all the "Bring back pre-NGE" stuff... it's kinda your job. Or at least, the job of someone who has the authority to speak for you.
Just simply up the levels on things, make the numerous caves around the planets have high quality loot. With the upcoming Trader/Entertainer vamp, make Skill tapes once again lootable, anything as long as it is hard.
umm, the old "junk" loot is now going to be worth something. if not all the junk loot, at least some of it may be a tad difficult to find. but the bottom line is that skill tapes ARE coming back - have you read ANYTHING about chapter 5 and ground RE?

While they did say this was important, I was susprised they ranked this higher than working on PVP. Obviously he doesn't read any of the forums and players requests.
2) This lead to a discussion about involving the community in the decision making process. They pointed out that we do a lousy job at this, and they're right. As such, you can expect a poll in the near future to help us prioritize things for the next 6-12 months. They have said this exact thing every year now and still we see nothing to fix it.
3) Guild Management tools in SWG aren't up to snuff - I went ballistic when I heard you can only manage your guild through the terminal. We need to fix this. lol, he's only NOW seeing this?
4) Server consolidation - we need to fasttrack this - it's a very hard problem, and the team has had other priorities. NO! NO! NO!, Once again the players don't want this but we do want a house claen up. OMG proof yet again that he never reads the forums
5) We need to explain ourselves and the thinking behind changes a lot better Really? You think so? I'm still trying to find out where the entertainer community said they wanted these holo band players!!!
6) Once we got past the "please bring back the pre-NGE servers" (no, we're never going to do that) the discussion really got down to brass tacks. Many people ask me why I don't post a lot here, and the simple answer is that it's hard to follow a thread when many of the posts end up being "bring back pre-NGE servers" (ummm yea those posts haven't been around for months. Perhaps you are mistaking them with the posts that say "FIX THIS PLEASE!!!!") and other issues we've moved past. Please don't misunderstand me on this - I get why some people want this. It's just that it isn't possible and at some point if we're going to move the game forward new ideas are at the top of the list of things we should be discussing. That's my view anyways. Well Smed if you take anything from your actual players it's that we have great ideas among the "actual" players that you should look at. Content, content, content!!!! Also fixes to some well known bugs, ie: the a-wing engine glow, are way past due to be addressed.

No server merges, I would advocate that NEW servers be made and allow FREE transfers to all player accounts that are willing TO INCLUDE all or most of there virtual property and money. As for elaboration, just look into recent history of other games that ventured into merges. JUST DOESN'T WORK. enough said..

Polls on the swg website (not just 1 poll, several, spanning different categories) would give you A LOT of insight. Pulling 5-10 people from the crowd, and expecting them to represent the majority, has always been an inaccurate way (in my eyes) to gather information about the needs, wants, and opinions of the playerbase.
Before you guys say that very few players use the forums - display the occasional ingame on-screen message about the polls!

To the community, please lets not focus on the negative instead lets see this in a positive light.
As Smed said we need to focus on moving the game forward and if that means content then that's all good isn't it?
Instead of blaming Smed or Helios or anyone else at SOE we should be posting what we want to have in the way of content, give them some ideas. If, going forward, they will listen to us more then now is the time to put the past behind us and continue posting/re-posting them new ideas and suggestions.
/Salu
Icco, we HAVE been telling them things that are needed in game in positive ways. Problem is that they didnt listen to us then and they still havent, SURE somebody can argue that they RE added some of the old game in our expertise. FINALLY they listened to something, but with smedly we are STILL pissed that He still contends to play other games and focus more on there well being instead of listening to us. and his note suggest that they have had poor comunications and conections with us. DUH., Had they listened to us back then we would not be having this conversation and hate now. And to think it took ALL THIS TIME for him to see this as a problem?
I understand all that but how is the continual slagging off helping the game? It isnt, the real problem is in game now and it's lack of content, that's why I havent logged more than 6 hours of game time in the past week.
But to keep chewing the same old bone time after time and post after post is not going to achieve anything. We all need to throw that old and very tired bone away get a fresh plate and start a new. By posting constructively we can achieve a lot more and get more back in game faster, make SWG fun again and get the community back and happy.
For some it will never be like the old days but we, the community, can help make this game great if not greater than before. The only way we can do this is by putting all that has been said, all that has been done behind us and concentrate on the future.
