Here are some of the things that have been discussed in reference to the conceptual botany system:
 
Where
  • A couple of smaller outdoor plots.  Maybe a personal "herb garden" size and a larger "Flower Garden" size for a small family or the serious enthusiast.
  • A couple of larger indoor "green houses".  Perhaps something up to the size of a guild hall - call it a "Terrarium" or something of the sort.  Multiple people could tend the plants. 
  • Both indoor and outdoor areas could be decorated.  Outdoor areas have to be smaller and/or contain fewer objects to decrease potential for lag when you enter the area.  Either that, or the content of the lot can't be visible until you step on the lot.

What

  • Plants
  • Trees
  • Bushes/Shrubs
  • Mushrooms/Fungi

Why

  • Flora can be harvested once they "flower" (or whatever the equivalent might be).  Some things that these resources might be used for:
    • Chef recipe component for food, drink or other stat altering substances
    • Directly usable as buff items
    • Components in special weapon ammunition (poison cartridges for your Tusken rifle?)
    • Directly usable as buff or stat altering items
    • Something else?
  • Flowers and plants can be "petrified" by a genetic engineer at any stage of their development so that the flower/tree/whatnot can be used as decoration.  It won't grow any more or produce resources, but it also won't get sick or require taking care of
  • You can just sit in your garden with your friends and chat it up

Could you make one of the fungi that can be harvested into a grenade like item that when thrown will explode giving off a poisonous spore cloud?

Might the introduction of gardens get rid of Micro Flora Plants and the like?

Other than that, a stackable poison (stacks with... spy poisons or something) would be freaking sweet.

Yeah, sounds good.  If Beast Mastery makes the cut.  You could feed the herbivores stuff from your garden and the carnivores harvested meats.

Indoor Aquariums perhaps? where you can breed clams, crayfish or fish. they are not really plants, but would fit in the scenario of plant terrariums. Of course you could try to use an aquarium for a certain kind of seaweed if it really has to be plants.
 
In combination of the beastmaster, maybe an outdoor garden that has certain pets in it, like a durni garden. where you can harvest meat. THese durnis cannot be taken out to start beastmastering it, but maybe certain species can breed eggs in captivity. either for hatching or prcessed as resource.
 
Here is an crazy idea, a special kind of seed that can be launched from a special weapon that snares enemies as when the seed is shot from the launcher it will pop in some nasty vines. (Maybe a bit too crazy)
 
Flowers and plants can be used for unique paint and  texture kits  for either clothes, but also armor and furniture.
 
Here are some extra questions:
 
Will there be special garden lots? or must we use the current lots we got?  if it uses a lot, then consider to put up a small crate or shed onto the garden to compensate for the loss in storage for some people.
 
Will gardens be tied to cities or can i transform tatooine in the garden planet?
 
Will gardens be tied to houses, does a garden need to be close to my home?
 
Will there be a special house deed that has a garden attached to it (i'm thinking of on of the paintings of a residential house where there is some sort of vegetation on the second floor)?

Yes, will this be replaceing Floral Farms for harvesting?

What about multi-level or "stepped" plant beds. Would allow for larger gardens/cultivation area while building UP on the landscape instead of outward.
 
And I do so love this whole idea.

I thought smuggler crafting was removed becuase of "drug use" inference,

I really want to be an herb farmer.
