I've been reading Jedi posts all day long and i've come to a conclusion.  Its time based, but random time based for everyone.  Devs said everyone can become a jedi but in a few monthes there will only be a hand full on each server that will have unlocked a FS slot.  SO how would one do this.  Being the programmer with no social life that i am i started to think.  Based on the dev statments "evenyone can unlock FS", "Casual Players it will take longer", "Only a few FS slots open in a few monthes" how would i code it?  HAHA...the funny part is i started writing this post thinking ok this is a possible way, but as i'm thinking through the code i'm seeing possible errors and logic errors that would make that way invalid...i'm such a dork.   Trust me this ideas is riddled with bugs and errors but oh well haha:

-Random Time contraint on unlocking FS slot that varies from 6 months to 2 yrs.  On logging into the server for the first time it uses that varible to set period of time, game time not real time, a character would have to be played in order to unlock the FS slot.

RIght, here is why i think this would be true.  Our character data is not saved on our computers its on the servers.  Only the game data is stored on your harddrive.  Yeah there will be a file in your SWG with your characters name, but that is just a server reference file that tells the server which character you are playing and on which server.  Hence the reason why when servers are down your characters are in boxers and are the basic templet which is most of the time bald. and pale! hehe  So after you registered you code key your character on the server get a time limit.  This would be completely random and it can be programed into the server code to allow a limited amount of people to get access to the FS slot with in six months ie when time limit of 6 months = the quota, you begin setting the time limit to the next time frame.  Now i said it would be completly random this could mean who is randomly choosen for a FS slot after 6 monthes, or it could mean that...wait a sec..ok lets me clarify this whole thing:

1) Only a few players will get FS slot after a few monthes.
2) Set several game time hours to open the FS slot as varibles.
3) Set it in the server code that the smallest amount of hours has a 1 to 100 odds or something like that.  Each time limit lessen the odds as it goes up in hours per varible.
4) Randomly set characters one of these hours.

Since the Devs do not want FS slots to appear on the servers anytime soon they say ok 3 monthes is when the first FS opens up so 30 day in a month on adverage, 24 hours in a day so set the lowest time limit to 2160hrs of game time.

Here is the kicker with this system a hard core player and a casual player could both be set as the smallest amount of game time needed to play in order to get a FS slot.  Hard core players who put in a lot of game time will get open up the FS slot quicker then a casual player, which the devs have stated.  Greatest part about this is it will see completely random haha cause everyones ammount of game time hardcore or casual varies.  SO when the devs say everyone will get to the FS slot their own way they are not lying.  One day I might be crafting spice and a msg might pop up "The force is strong with this one" or something and BAM i got a FS slot or someone else is crafting, running away from rancors, or getting off a transport.

Now people think its quests that will unlock FS slot, but i highly doubt it.  The devs said they want Jedi rare.  If it was a quest everyone would do it and bam we would have a few thousand jedi on every server.  It is my guess that NON -FS slot characters are able to do these quests and get these holocrons but they are worthless to them since that are not FS.  That holocron quest i do think is part of the key though once you get the the FS there are no trainers.  Your trainer is that holocron and when you get the right amount of exp in jedi you will be able to refer to that holocron for training.  NPCs will not be Jedi trainers else it would be a great place for would be Jedi hunter to post themselves and pick off FS characters, and with as hard as becoming a jedi is it would only make sence.

Like i said before this is my theory.  You can agree or not but remember above all else...its just a game.

Well, I see one teeny, tiny problem with it: Raph has categorically denied its central premises.

The selection process is not random. "Time Played" does not equate to "Unlocked FS character Slot".

But, whatever floats your boat.

Well, TKM, not everybody spends the same amount of time on the game.

It makes it different because when the game time limit will be up everyone will be doing something different and at different times.  For instance like i stated before I could be crafting spice, someone could be running from a rancor, or dancing in a cantina, but when that limit runs out you will be like wait a sec what did i do that was right.  Point is there is no right or wrong it just happens when your set game time varible is met.  Here is a better way of putting what i stated before:  You and i are randomly set to the same time varible.  Lets say you play SWG more hours then I do.  You will reach the point where you get a FS slot quicker then i would.  My only issue with quests being the key to unlocking a FS slot is the amount of programming that goes behind it.  The more complex the system the more bugs you will need to go through.  I mean i look at the game, which i love by the way and still see mobs floating in the air haha.  Coding it the way i came up with would take me only a few hrs to write and debug since its a very simple C++ procedure.  I mean I looked at this from a programmers point of view.  When you are writing any piece of code you want it clean, short, and to do its job right...if you add more varibles into it, it leaves more bugs to deal with.  Like i said its just my oppion you don't have to agree. =)  Cheers

Ceist if that is true i feel sorry for the people that wrote it and those that have to debug it...that is going to be one hell of a lot of code.  Ok guys I'm finally getting off work after 12 hrs....time to go get drunk.  Cheers

You are needlessly overestimating the difficulty of devising a system which allows for a path unique to each player.

Unnecessary disclaimer: The following is purely a speculative example.

With a simple pool of 10 objectives, they can select five different objectives that must be completed to unlock the FS slot for well more than the probable limit of characters per server.

By increasing the pool size and perhaps even increasing the number of objectives that must be completed, even just slightly, they can, with an incredibly simple system, guarantee a set of specific objectives that are unique to more people than we have on the planet.

When Raph says that he thinks there could be a "formula" that, when followed, would "probably guarantee" that the slot is unlocked, I consider something like this to not only fit his statement better than almost anything else I've read, but also fit everything else they have said about the subject, while remaining very simple to implement.

He claimed it is fairly easy to tweak the system to alter the difficulty of the process. With the above, by adjusting the types or the number of objectives (and the number which must be completed), the difficulty can scale dramatically in whichever direction they so desire.

If they incorporated existing game elements into the "objective pool", they minimize the only part of the system that would be even moderately time-consuming, which is the creation of the individual objectives.

This would give them a ludicrous amount of perceived complexity and obscurity (checked the odds on the Powerball lottery lately?), and is totally trivial to implement.

Buuuuuuut anyway.

they said no type of quota is in place, and it isnt based on luck.

also, with your system what stops me form just loggign in and goign afkl 24/7 til my slot pops up.

Nobody will know for sure, and putting this much thought into something so trivial was a waste if you ask me.

Not only that, but your post was riddled with hard-to-understand sentences because of the horrible grammar...

And the computer terminology you pulled out of your back side made no sense. How would you understand programming and coding of the servers if you debug programs in your spare time? Come now...

trivial...heh

trivial it not be, people think its trivial because sony has opted not to give jedi any fanfare, had it had fanfare, mor epopel would be interested..as it is, less people are interested because it isnt tangible liek other professions.

My example would be completely trivial to implement and does, in fact, meet the requirements to match the things they've said about it. *shrug*

Under a week to implement and test the actual code; month or less for the content depending on how much of the existing game systems they borrowed for it.

I'm not claiming this to be the system they've put in place, of course... Just pointing out that it is quite easy to do something that gives the appearance of extreme complexity/obscurity even though the number of variables is ridiculously small.

Very interesting theory you've put forth. I've got a slightly different one.

My experience in this game is not as extensive as I believe others who use these message boards must be, but it is extensive enough to know this. Every favor gained is based on EXP and Faction standing. Why should this be any different for FS's. Only, the tallies to FS EXP and Faction Standing would have to be invisible so nobody could intentionally effect them.

Also, we have no idea what could be the cause in effect of changing these values like we do with say... Thug standing. Very simple concept. You kill a thug, you lose standing among thugs and gain standing with towns people. Conversely, you kill towns people and the effect reverses.

Maybe the faction effect for FS is killing animals (that would be unfortunate since I'm one meanie towards helpless knorts). It may also be affected by killing reds vs. blues. You kill a lot of blues, then the force may not be strong with you, you're just taking it easy. If you kill reds, then you've done something outside your abilities... the force must be strong with you. Sooooo, that may cause you to gain/lose FS faction standing.  I hope that's the case, 'cause I'm constantly biting off more than I can chew with varying results.

But, the difficult thing is not knowing what you're doing to effect it. Unfortunately, it leaves open the possibility for somebody to break the secret and devise a formula to acheive FS status. This would probably force the dev's to redesign it... what a headache. Your theory would make this impossible so has some weight.

Also, did the dev's say everyone would open a force slot? I don't think it did... I think it said every one COULD open one (much different than WOULD) and the radom count down to FS availability would mean somebody that enjoys logging on to look at all the pretty colors moving across the screen would eventually open a force slot. That would be stupid. It has to be acheivement based. I think they're referance to it taking a while to open a FS is based of the time it would take to acheive the requirement to opening a FS... and that they would be difficult. Your theory has them stumbling into it. Like accidently sailing across the Alantic and discovering the New World.

I think it will take effort. It may not be directional effort, but effort none the less.
