First off, apparently you can have 4 of either disks, Rebel or Imperial - doesn't matter which. I handed in the completed Imperial set to an Imperial recruiter and was given a reward (500 Faction XP, 991 Credits, event 'Badge'). I'm halfway done finding all the Rebel disks, I'll let you know if I can turn those into the Imperial recruiter as well - I'm 99% sure I can at this point.
Neutrals (those without a declared faction) can turn in the disks - you do not have to have a faction declared. I turned in the disks before declaring my faction (was true neutral, no Rebel or Imperial faction points earned) - you will still recieve fact points for whatever faction you returned the disks to.
The message doesn't decode when you combine all of the disks, it'll give you a bunch of gibberish. I'm guessing we have to manually decode it ourselves (as opposed to finding someone in game that can decode it for us). Be sure and take a screenshot of the gibberish before you turn in the disk, if you plan to try and decode it (the disk is obviously removed from your inventory when you turn it in).
The disks themselves are a random rare drop off of pretty much any humanoid NPC. There is no special area to get them from - non-combat classes can fight really low level newbie NPCs and still get them, so they're not totally dependant upon buying them.
Gonna go try and get ahold of the last 2 rebel disks I need, will report back when I find them to let you know for sure if you can turn both sets in to any recruiter, and what continued rewards you get (if any).
I have gotten no duplicates - I'm of the opinion that it keeps track of which ones you've found/have, and you won't get them (until possibly after you've completed the quest). Will see.
You can get them from destroy missions, but it isn't required. I got 2 from Trandoshan Slavemaster missions on tatooine, the rest I got from just roaming the countryside killing NPCs.
As long as whatever you're killing has a chance to drop loot, you have a chance for one of the disks to drop.
A question on faction's. I am also a true neutral, because it's good for business (why limit myself to slicing only for neutral and reb's or neutral and imps?). If I collect a set and turn them in, and I still a neutral? Lets say I give them to the Imperials, can I still trade with rebels? I imagine you actually have to join a faction before you get limited in trades and heals and what not, but I like to be safe. I wonder why the IMP's would want their own disks though. Maybe they really did make it imps want imps and rebel want rebel disks. Information is always lacking.
Yes, you remain neutral - in order to 'join' the rebel or imperial factions you must talk to a recruiter and join manually once you've gained 200 faction XP. You can do these missions and remain neutral, without a hitch.
Imps want their own disks because, well, it was stolen and the rebels don't need to get their grubby hands on it. They'll take rebel disks because its secret rebel information (I've seen it posted by others now that you can turn in opposing faction disks)..
About how long did this actually take you? Did you spend hours and hours killing NPC after NPC, or were the disks dropped pretty often? Other than that, thanks for the post because I wanted to complete the quest, but was unsure as to how to go about it.
Then again, I did it alone - I'm sure you could get the disks quicker by bartering with others in town. And in a week or two, as people complete the mission, I'm sure you'll see more for sale.
Yeah I will have to buy mine as I like continuity and roleplay. I dont care to slaughter innocent yellows and weak cons to gain data disks. The 8 missions I did for the rebels produced nada. Maybe try again tomorrow.
Heh. My friend has a -2000 faction rating with Jawas. If the faction list was going from day 1, I'm sure we'd both have -5000. I never see any Jawa's anymore though. Guess everyone is killing them for discs. I've just been doing destroy mission in where you kill humanoid creatures, but nothing so far.
