To be clear on this - I sent Gabe a private email which he proceeded to post. I have no problems with people criticizing our games. I felt he was a little harsh on the actual people that made them.. that's all. That's also the first time I had emailed Gabe and complained about anything.. ever.
In 15 years in this business I have never once had an obviously private email posted like that. It was extremely unprofessional and I thought it was a pretty cheap shot.

Well i'm not too sure you should be terribly surprised that your email ended up on their site. Emails are not guarantees of privacy...nothing in games ever is without a NDA in place.
most of us forum peoples know that with every tell we send, every email we get we run the risk of ending up in a screenshot on these forums for example

While in general I agree, I do think we can read some emails that are obviously meant for the recipient and not to be shared with the community. There is a great thread on the Alkhazam(sp?) board where the author didn't post his emails with Smed until such permission had been given... so yes, that is a risk, but you kinda know what should and shouldn't be posted.
PS! Smed, if your gonna respond to my email of Monday night.. its for my eyes only.. thanks

Engaging in dialogue with the children in this thread is fruitless. They lack rationality, maturity and most importantly: objective critical thinking skills. Trying to rationalize with these people is like trying to explain something to a 15-year-old ... which is exactly what these people are.

some are...but penny arcade has a long history of this, thus it shouldn't be a surprise

As a company we don't discuss the charitable stuff we do. If you do something for charity.. it shouldn't be PR fodder. When we have Make a Wish Foundation kids in here I don't want it all over the front page of our webpages. It's just not our style.
After I pointed out a lot of this to Gabe he removed that part which I appreciate.

As odd of an occurance as it may seem, I agree with you. I thought the part about "SOE is bad because they didn't give us money to give to others" was a really illogical thing to complain about. No company is forced to give to charity, even if it is for a fantastic cause.
That was NOT what they said.
They said that when talking about unprofessional or low blows, a company that fires back old opinion posts made when asked to contribute to charity work does not have room to talk.
If Chris Kramer had written back to them what John Smedley did in here (We do our own charity work, thank you for asking), THAT would have been professional.
What they did wasn't.
Yes but they were emailling someone repeatedly saying "give to our charity" before they even got that response. Not to be critical (I do like PA and i think the work they do with Child's Play is great), but after they didn't get the response the first time, they should have written it off then. Not wanting to give to CP just because PA has a negative view on SOE is a valid excuse, even though it is a little lame. Sorry to be playing devil's advocate, but people can give or not give to charity for any reason they want.

Hi, I'm not 15 years old.
Objective critical thinking skills tell me that posting the e-mail was rude, but so was the way in which SOE responded to their Child's Play request.
Other than that, it's just opinions on a video game and a boss supporting his employees.
Nothing out of the ordinary. But the way it was all gone about was silly on both ends.

Some have made good arguments without that many flames... on both sides. I've seen worse threads and this one hasn't been deleted yet.
Smedly, Why don't lift the NDA? I mean... this is a game. I don't really think secrets drive games too well, not to mention the fact it places huge restrictions on free publicity. I'd rather hear what developers really want to say rather than some PR bovine fecal matter.
