I've been getting alot of requests lately to divulge my Krayt Hunting technique, specifically the method I use to find them in the first place. Killing them is the easy part, if there were constant spawns of Dragons everywhere and not limited by the random/rare spawn system, the markets would no doubt be flooded with Krayt Loot. There are ways to maximize your searching pattern though, to make sure you're not missing any spawns, because you can be 150m from a Krayt and not see it unless you get into range. Well, here we go.
Understanding how the Spawning System in SWG works or Forget Rangers
The first step to optimizing your searching technique, is to know how the spawns in Star Wars Galaxies work, in the first place. Now, about Rangers. I'll point out now that Rangers are extremely limited in their usefullness for finding Krayts in particular, they can be used more effectively to find lower-demand rare spawns, like Graul Marauders, etc. The way the spawning system was put together (it's very different from the way the system worked in EQ) works so that spawns dont actually appear into the game world, until someone has driven within range of the spawn loc and actually made it pop. Otherwise, you could be standing with a ranger, use Track wihle you're both standing still, and not see a Krayt Spawn that's 150m away, simply because nobody has driven by and forced the spawn yet. The Krayt isnt spawned until someone spawns it, and it wont show up on Track in the same way.
So, if you are with a Ranger, and you find a Krayt Dragon on Track, chances are someone is fighting it already, or there are rare instances where someone drives by a Dragon spawn and leaves it be, in which case you'd have the spawn to yourself, but as I said, these instances are very rare, most people when they find a Krayt spawn, will kill it. In general, driving around is far more effective for finding random spawns, unless you intend on Kill Stealing any dragons you find, then Track might be more benifitial for you.
How you drive around spawns directly effects the amount of NPCs you'll find
This is deffinately the most important aspect to finding Krayts, and other spawns. Most people tend to drive straight through spawns when searching, which is an extremely ineffecient way of going about it. If you drive straight through a spawn of NPCs, or a Lair, you're missing the majority of the spawns in the area. What you want to do, is drive around spawns. This takes a bit of practice, but when you get it down, I'll guarantee that your success with finding Krayts will increase by a huge amount. I've got some screenshots to help illustrate the technique, since it's very hard to explain without being in-game and showing how its done.
Now, the first thing you want to remember, is imagine a 90m radius circle around each spawn, centered around the middle of the spawn/lair. This is much easier to do with Lairs because they're always the central spawn point, but its not difficult to do with Dune Stalkers, etc. This is what it should look like in your mind. Using the Krayt Graveyard as a referance point here.
You see the two spawns there on either side of me, I've stuck exactly 90m circles over them, roughly centered in the middle of the spawn. Sometimes they overlap, sometimes there's space between the spawns, but 90m is a good rule of thumb to use. You've now got the circles burned into your mind, onto the next step, the driving technique.
In this picture, I've got 3 nearby spawns circled in black, and the Red line is the path I would take around those spawns. As you can see, the plan would be to circle around the spawns, 90m out from each. Doing this guarantees that you'll see all of the spawns around the spawn you're next to, this is very important, because you could potentially be 150m away from a Krayt Spawn and not see it if you drive right through the spawn you're at. Every single spawn loc could pop a krayt, and you dont want to miss one.
Here's another picture to help illustrate what you should be doing to search around spawns. The idea is to do a half or 3/4 circle around the spawn loc, 90m roughly from the center, and lead off from the end of your rotation and lead into another spawn nearby, do the same thing, repeat that and weave through the spawns.
Here's 3 more spawns circled, showing my initial path around them. Now what I'd do, is follow that path, then continue along the edge of those spawns, until the next one popped up, then lead off and do a half circle around that one, etc etc.
The Technique Works! By the way, lookie at what I found while taking the screenies to document my method, to throw any doubts people might have about it working
To sum it all up, what you basically want to do is circle around each spawn loc, 90m out from the center, doing 1/2 or 3/4 circles then leading into the next spawn loc, repeating the process and moving through the area. Turn on the Krayt Graveyard POI, and use this technique in every area within a 1800m radius of the POI. This is the most common spawn area and Krayts can spawn anywhere within this radius, at anytime of the day (regardless of what you might have heard about them spawning at a certain time, they dont, its completely random).
This isnt guaranteed to produce a spawn, and it might take a bit of time to get the technique down, but once you have it memorized, you'll have much better luck finding the Krayts or whatever you're looking for. I've still driven around for 8hrs before without seeing a single Dragon, but I'm known on Valcyn as the Krayt Hunter, people say they spawn wherever I go, which is only a partial truth. I owe it all to this searching technique, use it wisely!
