Well, naturally just as I was set to get this compiled from the previous posts we had, I had to take off again...and return to find a new correspondent!  Thanks for the job well done Caylin, and congrats Wes!  And thanks to all of you in the community who helped put this thing together!  Once we feel I didn't get any nasty typo's in the thing, the powers that be can staple it in the FAQ.  Enjoy!

Bomb Droids
What are 'bomb droids'? Bomb droids (or detonation droids) are any droid built by a DE containing one or more detonation modules. The most 'bang for the buck' would be an MSE droid packed to the rivets with explosives; the max rating for these little guys is 38.  You can get a larger explosion in an R3 (Det ratings up to 59 or so?) or other 'bigger' droid, but they also cost much more. The det rating is governed by the particular droid's storage capacity with MSE's having a bonus.

How do I make one explode? At Novice Smuggler you get the command '/detonateDroid' ('/det' also works just fine).  Either target a droid you own and issue the command, or issue the command with /tellpet.  Once initiated, a countdown timer will balloon over the droid.  3...2..1.. and then it explodes.  You must be within 90m of the droid to issue the command.  Exploding a droid will naturally eliminate the droid.  You cannot issue the detonation command while feigned or prone.

What can I kill with it? Anything that you can target and is capable of moving.  Thus overt enemy players, vehicles, and critters of all kinds are in.  Lairs and turrets are out.  You do NOT get any exp for the things you kill.

What kind of damage does it do? Bomb droid damage is blast damage.  The 75% PvP damage reduction applies, but the area-effect blast seems to bypass defense mods.  PvP damage from mouse droids is reported to range 250-650 depending on the droid's rating and the target's armor and blast resistance.  PvE targets usually take 4 digit damage.

Can it be stopped? You cannot cancel the order once the timer starts, but if the droid is incapped before it explodes, the timer will stop.  (So in essence, your enemy can stop it).  It is reported that you can re-issue the detonate command to an incapped droid and the timer will start over and explode. Naturally the droid will explode in place (since it is incapped, it can no longer move).  You can certainly repair your droid from the incapped state and send it on the chase again.

Typical bomb droid setup/use:

  1. Get the droid out.  This can be done ahead of time just like any other pet, or can be done during combat from a deed if you have a deed in your inventory.  You cannot pull them from the crate during combat though.  Although you cannot issue the /det command prone, you CAN get a bomb bot out from a deed while prone or feigned, so you can issue the command as soon as you stand.
  2. You need to target the droid at some point to issue the detonation command; /tellpet group works well here.  Then you can click on the droid from your group list.  Otherwise, if your droid has a good name, you can use /target with the droid's name.
  3. Issue the detonate command to start the sequence.
  4. Send it on the chase... /tellpet follow works well here.
Some notes on the use: Depending on how close you are to your target, you may want to send it on the chase before you issue the detonate command.  Sometimes /tellpet is buggy...in these cases you may need to issue commands using the droid's name, if you have named it.  In any case, it is recommended to hotbar the detonation and /tellpet commands for speedy use.

Tips on keeping your droid 'alive' long enough for the fireworks:

  • Disguise your bomb droid: Fill a silver 'ticket droid' with explosives, or name your droids something benign like "Tipme" or "Packstorage", etc.
  • Use your smuggler skills...Panic shot to prevent the target from shooting at the droid, or Low Blow to let the little bugger catch up.
  • Pull your droid out in the middle of a crowd so it doesn't present such an obvious target.
  •

Again, a big thanks to the entire community for pitching in for this info!

Wow, a novice smuggler skill I was not aware of.

I will have to try this!

Forgive the "newbish" question but, are the detonations modules "built in" by the DE, or just stuff that you store in the droid?

I suspect the former, but just want to be sure.

yes, the det modules are built in.  Because they take a rare gas and can only be used by smugglers and bounty hunters, they are not widely stocked and you may have to request some from your local droid engineer.

Sure is.... in fact, I believe this went in with the droids rebuilt patch a few months ago. Now you just need to find a DE and buy some .

I was participating in an unbuffed guildwar (for fun of course), and had recently found a DE with a few crates of bomb droids. For fun, I pulled one, and hit the /det command, then ran into battle. I incapped 4 or 5 people at the same time best use I've ever made of one.

I was duelling with a guildmate (for fun of course) who was a BH. He pulled his MSE bomb droid out and as soon as I saw it I targeted and shot it. it did the little droid incap animation then lay there on it's side. I managed to take the upper hand in the fight (might have been with a bomb droid of my own, can't remember) and he took an incap. First thing he did when he stood back up was hit /det on his incapped droid. Of course, I wasn't paying attention to said droid, as I thought I'd taken it out. then, BAM, I'm down. Then his BH fire killed me

Thanks for sharing that experience there Max...sounds like it was pretty fun!

I'm getting a little more curious about detonating an incapped droid....does anyone know if the countdown can be stopped again if the droid is shot when it is incapped?  Or does your opponent lose the option to target the incapped droid, so it is 'certain' to go off if the countdown is started while it is incapped?  That will be a key thing to update in the FAQ above.

Well, I used a bomb droid for the first time a few days ago.

I detonated one right in the middle of an Imp base than ran away. hehehe Then when my TEF went away I came back to pick on some softened stormies.

Got to love the little buggers, I need to find some more.

Edit: Gah "blush", just realised I was on that thread from the FAQ and that it is more than a month old. Sorry for the involontary "necroposting".

No you can't /det while FD'd but you can call whiled FD'd it only if its in your inventory. I did that one time and it scared off a TKA coming into to blackbar me until another allied TKA took him over, allowing me to get up. He got scared when it appeared by my FD'd body and ran away (I guess he didnt know I couldnt detonate it until I stood) because 5 minutes before I had cut his buffed ham in half with a previous one.

I've incapped unbuffed players with one blast a few times. If you shoot them first you get points for the kill. I like /lowblow /panicshot /peace them as the droid heads towards them, running along beside me. I've killed commandos and soldiers many times this way, profs that usually pwn us. With bomb droids you can really bring an art to dirty fighting, just be prepared for hate tells after.

It takes practice, and practice takes creds. Its not easy to get timing right the first time, and at an average of 5k a pop, not cheap to learn.

If you find a crate of 5 for 50k buy it. 5k each is a good deal. I love them especially for dealing with random punks challenging duels. There so unexpected and relatively unknown to many, some ppl are like.. wt-f just happened? how the hell did i get pwned by a smug??

On Valcyn I seen these R2 bomb droids called "Jedi Go Booms" with a detonation of 65. 50k each, I'm saving up for a few. I have a feeling that should incap a few buffed players.
